First, the National Rifle Association worked to let gun owners carry firearms in public. Then it fought to pass laws that say gun carriers can open fire to stop a perceived threat, even when retreat is possible. Now that the NRA has expanded the legal right to armed self defense, it’s muscling into the niche industry that’s arisen to help Americans deal with the costly consequences of actually exercising it. This week, the group unveiled insurance plans that it says will help defray the legal costs that can arise from shooting another person. |

New Jersey’s ban on electronic arms is an unconstitutional violation of the Second Amendment and the state must stop enforcing it, a federal judge ordered Tuesday. Judge Michael A. Shipp of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, Vicinage of Trenton, issued the order in the matter of New Jersey Second Amendment Society and Mark Cheeseman vs. New Jersey Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino and Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, Col. Rick Fuentes. |

A debate at the Alabama State House centers on this question: Should people be required to have a concealed carry permit in order to carry concealed firearms?
Law enforcement from across the state filled the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee meeting in Montgomery Wednesday. Most were there in opposition to Senate Bill 24.
The bill, which already passed the Senate, would eliminate the need for concealed carry permits in Alabama.
The Alabama Sheriff's Association, Police Chiefs Association and Fraternal Order of Police are all opposed to the bill. |

The Second Amendment lost one of its biggest defenders recently when longtime journalist, talk show host and political commentator Mike McCarville passed away. For decades, Mike was a passionate supporter of our right to keep and bear arms, and a proud member of the NRA. His work in support of the Second Amendment earned him so many honors from the Oklahoma Rifle Association over the years that the organization eventually just named its media award after him (and yes, I’m proud to have my Mike McCarville Award in a place of honor in my home). |

Chicago has been fighting a losing battle on guns, and it’s not quite ready to stop. In 2008, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a Washington, D.C., ban on handguns violated the Second Amendment, the city should have realized its own ban was doomed. Instead, it went through its own litigation, which ended with the Supreme Court ruling that Chicago, too, was trampling on a constitutional right. |

First, Berkeley strips students of their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms so it can maintain and enforcing an allegedly gun-free campus. As a result, students are forced to depend entirely on campus and city police to secure their safety and liberty.
Second, campus law enforcement has shamefully abdicated its role. According to a lawsuit filed against the university by the Young America’s Foundation and the Berkeley College Republicans, the campus police operate under what is essentially a “stand down” order, intervening only if they believe human life is in immediate danger. |

It happens every session. There is always at least one bill that gets introduced and appears harmless on its face yet winds up taking way too long — often to the point of filibuster — to debate and advance. This year’s version — LB68 — would override individual city and local ordinances, making firearm regulations consistent statewide.
Seems pretty innocuous. Lincoln Sen. Mike Hilgers said the bill would authorize the state to regulate the registration, possession, transportation, transfer and storage of firearms and ammunition. Cities and villages would retain the authority to enforce prohibitions on firearm discharge. That will ensure public safety while also protecting the rights of lawful gun owners. |

A proposed law that would let 1.7 million conceal-carry permit holders temporarily store their guns with security while visiting Florida’s courthouses is on its way to the Senate floor.
SB 616 from Sarasota Republican Sen. Greg Steube passed its final committee Tuesday afternoon. Members of the Rules Committee endorsed it — with at least a couple Democrats opposed — after offering no discussion or debate.
The full Senate is scheduled to take up Steube’s bill on Thursday, with a floor vote expected Friday. |

A newly proposed Oklahoma state law, formally known as Senate Bill 40, could make it legal for people to brandish guns in an act of self-defense.
As they currently stand, state laws forbid the deliberate exposure of firearms except in instances of deadly force, according to Tulsa World.
"When you go and get your (concealed carry) license, that instructor tells you that you don't bring your gun out, you don't show your gun, you don't intimidate somebody with your gun," said Slaughterville Representative Bobby Cleveland. |

New Jersey has settled a lawsuit that would end the state's ban on civilians buying stun guns.
Under a consent decree approved by a federal judge on Tuesday, Attorney General Christopher Porrino conceded the state's ban on electronic arms is unconstitutional. The state law defines a stun gun as "any weapon or other device which emits an electrical charge or current intended to temporarily or permanently disable a person." |

It was an idea born of desperate times. In the waning days of World War II, Mauser engineers sought to simplify the revolutionary Sturmgewehr to save both materials and manufacturing time. The solution they came up with was to use the blowback system. The simplest form a self-loading firearm can take, a blowback design would do away with the gas-operating mechanism used by most such rifles. But the basic blowback design could only handle the low pressures of pistol cartridges in a practical shoulder-fired arm. To harness the power of a rifle cartridge, it would need a little help. So the engineers decided to use a unique system of rollers to delay the rearward thrust of the bolt until pressure in the rifle’s chamber dropped to a safe level. |

If I were required to take my neighbor down to the local firearm store to run background checks on both of us and clear the firearm just to sell that firearm to my neighbor, it would be an inconvenience, but I would do it because it’s the law.
Of course, background checks are meant to stop bad guys from getting firearms. How childish is it to think that requiring a background check would stop bad guys from getting firearms? How childish is it of us to think that the bad guys would actually follow the law? |

The first thing Dr. Amy Goldberg told me is that this article would be pointless. She said this on a phone call last summer, well before the election, before a tangible sensation that facts were futile became a broader American phenomenon. I was interested in Goldberg because she has spent 30 years as a trauma surgeon, almost all of that at the same hospital, Temple University Hospital in North Philadelphia, which treats more gunshot victims than any other in the state and is located in what was, according to one analysis, the deadliest of the 10 largest cities in the country until last year, with a homicide rate of 17.8 murders per 100,000 residents in 2015.

I support the columnist's right to his opinion, but using crime rates is a horrible example to say concealed carry isn't working — it's city officials for not putting enough law enforcement on the streets and the DA's offices for not putting these criminals behind bars.
Did you also know that there are currently over 300,000 active permits in the state of Wisconsin? That means all of those people currently have some sort of training. As well, Wisconsin is an open carry state, which requires no training or permit — so tell me, what is going to change if that person wears a jacket?
Again, I respect the writer's right to his opinion, but please don't make concealed carry licensees out to be people who intend to deter crime. |
