"A month-long gun amnesty designed to cut armed crime and gang culture is proving a 'substantial success', Home Secretary David Blunkett told MPs today."
"He said rocket launchers and hand grenades were among more than 7,000 weapons handed over to the police since March 31."
------- It's very telling that Blunkett measures success by the amount of weapons confiscated and not by the decrease in crime this amnesty is meant to accomplish. Perhaps because crime is higher than ever, and the British subjects are just a little more disarmed and helpless than they were a month ago. |

"Over the past three years, there have been 230 victims of shooting, compared with 345 who died after being hit or kicked. Stabbing was by far the most common method of killing, accounting for 693 deaths—a fact now being stressed by victims' families, some of whom have criticised the current gun amnesty."
------- More people were kicked to death than shot! End the reign of terror brought on by limbs! Time to institute strict foot control. |

"In this country, students are routinely assigned 1984, and teachers lead discussions of the novel, most often contrasting the outlines of Mr. Orwell's repressive society to our own freedoms in America, represented notably by our Bill of Rights. Ironically, today our government's actions regarding www.ed.gov make 1984 relevant for less-flattering comparisons."
"It is sobering to think that documents quietly are being removed from a crucial government Web site largely because of ideological incompatibility. 1984 becomes even more sadly prophetic; as philosopher Erich Fromm wrote years ago, Mr. Orwell's message is that 'it means us, too.' "
"While the administration may appear to have forgotten the lessons of 1984, contemporary readers will continue to absorb Mr. Orwell's terrifying - and today strangely pertinent - vision of a totalitarian society. We indeed do well to remember Big Brother's slogan 'IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.' It is as false then as it is now, and it is hoped that concerned citizens will demand that the purging of documents on www.ed.gov cease immediately." |

"Utterly fascinating poll about British crime in the Sunday sister of the Guardian, The Observer. Among the remarkable highlights, 67 per cent support the death penalty and nearly a quarter of Brits would be tempted to carry a gun if the law allowed it." ...
"This is truly amazing to me. The process of demonizing firearms began in 1920, but still almost 1 in 4 people want to carry one, never mind possess one for defending the home (I'd love to see the results if that question had been asked). It seems that RKBA may be an issue that could resurface in the UK if some people are courageous enough to champion it." |

"Now a group called Pennsylvanians Against Handgun Violence are using this awful tragedy to advance their political agenda, in complete defiance of the facts of the case. Their executive director, Nathaniel Glosser said, 'That a 14-year-old child should be able to get one gun, much less the two handguns Jimmy was reported as having, clearly illustrates that our state and the nation must take strong measures to keep guns out of the hands of children.' "
"Hold on a second. Slow down just a bit. Yes, it's true that Jimmy Sheets went into Red Lion Area Junior High School with several handguns, but that's only part of the story."
"The part PAHV fails to mention is that the guns were locked up in a gun safe. Kind of an important point when you're talking about taking measures to keep guns out of the hands of children, don't you think? Sheets evidently found the key to the safe and stole the guns which belonged to his stepfather, Arthur Baker."
"I think a few important points surface here. For one thing, measures were taken to try to keep the guns out of the young man's hands. For another, this incident shows us that a determined person will overcome obstacles (like a locked safe) to gain access to guns. We're not talking about a kid who was accidentally or even intentionally killed because guns and ammo were just lying around the house. We're talking about a kid who went amok, gained access to a locked safe, stole guns, and killed someone and himself with them." |

That's why the Second Amendment is America's first freedom. ..."

"My personal opinion is that as screwed up as this party can be sometimes and as dysfunctional as its members can be, we still have the best political philosophy in town, in any town. So what the hell are you doing about it? Complaining because you have worked for the party for years and it has let you down, so you quit? And are you saying the philosophy is sound even if some of the activists aren't, so you're going to give up or have already. Maybe you feel the practical societal changes that will bring us all more freedom are sound, even if the activists we need aren't all that active, so your not going to play anymore. Modern day anti-gun rhetoric is applied to the technology of 150 years ago. The 'Assault Weapons' of that time were much more advanced than those of the founding fathers, but the government then still recognized that the 2nd amendment protected all arms, not just the ones that didn't scare the anti-gun crowd. Does anyone doubt that if the Feinsteins, Schumers, or Bradys of the world were around 150 years ago that they'd be leading the call to disarm citizens of that era's modern firearms? |
