"A proposal by California's anti-gun Attorney General Bill Lockyer to require serial numbers on every handgun bullet and cartridge case sold in the Golden State is a backdoor attempt to make ammunition so cost prohibitive that it will essentially disarm law-abiding gun owners, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) said today."
"'Bill Lockyer's plan to laser-etch handgun ammunition in California is a numbers game that adds up to zero,' said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. 'This idea is being pushed ostensibly to make it easy for police to identify criminals who misuse guns. It would not only be enormously expensive for ammunition companies to accomplish, it also amounts to a scheme to register every gun owner in California by the ammunition he or she purchases.'" ... |

"Self-defense law is built on the bedrock assumption that people ought to try to escape an assailant before resorting to deadly force - unless the confrontation occurs at home, where it's presumed retreat is no longer an option."
"The National Rifle Association has a new version, and it can be summed up as Stand and Deliver."
"An NRA-crafted bill eliminating the need to retreat from a threat in public places and more freely allowing residents to 'meet force with force' was signed into law Tuesday by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. The gun rights group is now promising similar stand-your-ground measures around the country, even in traditionally liberal states like New York." ... |

... "If you want to make allies, Mr. Bogert, start by being polite to them, listening to their concerns with respect rather than mockery, and then taking action to cement the alliance. So far, you've done none of those things. Instead, you've engaged in political blackmail; you expect the NRA to actively support your cause in exchange for your agreement not to oppose theirs. Unfortunately, that's not a fair exchange. Gun owners will support your free speech rights, whether or not we have any kind of truce or deal with you, but you won't support our rights -- you'll just 'stop opposing' them." ... |

"A slightly revised version of the state's high-profile handgun permitting law picked up momentum in the Legislature on Wednesday, two weeks after the Appeals Court upheld a decision to strike it down on a technicality."
"On a 7-5 vote, with all Republicans in favor and DFLers opposed, the House Civil Law Committee voted to reinstate the 2003 law, which created a uniform standard for obtaining permits to carry guns in public and led to more being issued in the state. The prior law gave sheriffs and police chiefs wider power to deny permits." ... -------
Submitter's Note: Sheriffs still would have unfettered discretion to deny a permit to anyone that would likely be "a danger to self or the public". The difference is now if the applicant goes to court and wins, the sheriff has to pay the legal expenses out of his budget (not permit fees). |

The Fiji Police Force has defended a recent purchase of guns, saying it has boosted its ability to respond to threats of terrorism.
Fijilive reports, the Force recently bought 100 semi-automatic 'Glock' pistols from Austria, at a cost of 60-thousand U-S dollars, for its elite Tactical Response Team.
Police Commissioner Andrew Hughes says the guns will be used in high-risk situations to protect the public, including from possible terrorist attacks.
He says the guns are similar to ones in use by police forces in many countries, including Australia.
The weapons purchase comes after a non-government organisation, the Pacific Concerns Resource Centre, said the open display of guns by police and military sent the public the wrong message. |
