... "The bottom line: Local governments over much of urban America are indistinguishable from corrupt Third World regimes. The hate runs highest in these bastions of “tolerance” with their monopolies of violence. And those in charge seemingly get there not so much by merit or success at leading people in the dream of freedom and meritorious prosperity, but for a much more shameful reason ..." ...

"A federal appeals court judge yesterday delivered a blunt dissent in a 2-1 ruling by a 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in which he asserted that allowing government to determine which firearms people may own transfers too much power to government, according to Newsmax.com."

"But Judge Daniel A. Manion was on the losing side of a court challenge to a ban on so-called 'assault weapons' by the city of Highland Park, Illinois. The majority sided with the city, saying in a 12-page opinion that, 'If a ban on semi-automatic guns and large-capacity magazines reduces the perceived risk from a mass shooting, and makes the public feel safer as a result, that’s a substantial benefit.' ... "No charges will be filed against a man who stepped in to stop a gunman in Chicago thanks to Illinois adopting a concealed carry law for the state’s residents. The [SAF] reported in a press release from April 21, that without the lawsuit filed by SAF allowing law abiding residents of Illinois to carry concealed weapons, this incident could have been much worse."

"The defensive gun use (DGU) incident happened when an Uber (ride hailing service) driver, who was legally carrying a gun, happened upon the scene of a shooting. The gunman, 22-year-old Everardo Custodio, opened fire on a crowd in the Logan Square neighborhood of west Chicago and the Uber driver, a 47-year-old resident, stepped in. ..." ...

... "Then the NRA VP continued with a statement that has since been proven to be true in both Ferguson, Mo., and now Baltimore, Md."

"'I also think, though, that what people all over the country fear today is being abandoned by their government. If a tornado hits, if a hurricane hits, if a riot occurs that they’re going be out there alone. And the only way they’re going protect themselves in the cold and the dark, when they’re vulnerable is with a firearm. And I think that indicates how relevant and essential the Second Amendment is in today’s society to fundamental human survival.'" ...

"The anti-gun movement has been playing around with language since leaders decided to scrap the 'handgun control' brand in the late 1970s. Since then, we’ve seen a marked move from overt support for 'gun control' to supposed support for the much more innocuous 'gun safety' or 'responsible gun ownership.' The fact that they continue to try and portray themselves as pro-gun while pushing the same anti-gun laws they’ve tried to foist on the American people for decades hasn’t gone unnoticed. Americans are more supportive and protective of their right to keep and bear arms than ever before, according to a recent Gallup survey." ...

"As longtime readers may recall, TTAG T&E Editor Nick Leghorn had an intriguing challenge a few years back: to come up with a complete rifle for under $500 that would allow an average shooter to reliably make 1000 yard shots — which I interpret as ringing the 30″ gong at Best of the West’s 1000 yard range. However, while Nick was able to do it for under $1000, his effort at a low budget long-ranger came up short. I’m going to attempt Nick’s challenge, but I’m try it from a different angle. Rather than starting with a budget-priced modern rifle, I’m going to use a classic milsurp battle rifle: the Swiss Karabiner Model 1931, better known as the K31 . . ." ...

"It seems like silencer companies are coming out of the woodwork these days. Everyone and their brother makes cans — heck, my local FFL has a shop-built silencer they’re hawking. But while the basic design is simple enough making something that works, works well, and works well every single time is a challenge. It pays to have someone who knows what they’re doing at the helm, and in the case of Dead Air Armament they might have the best shot of any of the new silencer companies at making a big splash. Not only are they leveraging the engineering knowledge of Bergara Rifles to make their stuff, they’ve got Mike Pappas (formerly) of SilencerCo fame keeping them on the straight and narrow. ..." ...

"When another crazed gunman murdered 20 beautiful 6- and 7-year-old children in their ... elementary school in 2012, Republicans all over this country proved ... just how pro-life they truly were."

"Which was not at all."

"Before that horrific act, both political parties could be blamed for failing to act to try to reduce the enormous body count from guns in this country that has made the U.S. the world’s most blood-soaked killing ground."

"But that heartbreaking tragedy finally resulted in a U.S. president putting the full weight of his administration and most of his party behind common sense reforms to prevent the violent, the dangerous and the deranged from easily acquiring and using weapons of mass destruction." ...

The panel consisted of Chief Justice Easterbrook, Justice Williams (upholding the ban) and Judge Manion dissenting. As you read the opinion a little history is in order; Justice Easterbrook was on the McDonald and during NRA’s rebuttal told Professor Halbrook that he should simply reserve his time as we all know this isn’t the last stop for this case. And despite his displeasure with Heller, he seems to be daring SCOTUS once again to take up a case . . ." ...

"Writing that such bans 'may increase the public’s sense of safety,' a federal appeals court gave its blessing Monday to an Illinois town’s prohibition on large capacity magazines and certain firearms."

Supported by [ISRA] and a number of firearms manufacturers and trade groups, Friedman lost his claim to own now-prohibited guns and magazines in violation of the city’s ordinance to a lower court and appealed to the U.S. 7th Circuit Court last year." ...

... "Persons questioned by the District’s Gun Recovery Unit patrols may reasonably be at a loss as to how to react to these contacts. Is there a means to react to such nominally voluntary encounters that might preserve their constitutional prerogatives? I offer this advice: speak to officers firmly, politely, respectfully. Tell them, 'I do not wish to have an encounter with the police right now. Am I free to leave?' If the answer is 'no,' then coercion will cease to masquerade as consent. Our courts will be forced, at last, to directly grapple with the reality of the District’s policy of routinized and involuntary seizures." ...

Mitchell Setzer and Jay Adams appears to be about something more, if not something new, in American constitutional politics, something also addressed by the US and NC Constitutions. The legal theory that states may nullify federal laws is almost as old as the Republic. The first case to reach the Supreme Court was in 1796. Then, and consistently thereafter, the Supreme Court has invalidated nullification under the 'Supremacy Clause,' Article 6, section 2 of the Constitution." ...
