Senator Ted Cruz did something unusual at today’s NRA-ILA Leadership Forum: He made a speech about the Second Amendment. More specifically, Cruz cast the 2016 election as a “referendum” on the Supreme Court and its fealty to the Bill of Rights. Cruz explained the importance of the 2008 D.C. v Heller decision, and reminded the audience that there are many courts still defying it — in particular, the Fourth Circuit, which recently rewrote the ruling in order to uphold a Maryland ban on “assault weapons.” |

On the day that President Donald Trump addressed the NRA in Atlanta, the first president to do so since President Ronald Reagan, I wanted to share my thoughts about the Second Amendment — and why so many of us stand so fervently behind it.
Freedom is what makes our country great. These freedoms are identified in our Bill of Rights. They are referenced in the Declaration of Independence. For those who need a refresher: “That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” |

Gun sales in Arizona have started to rebound after a brief January slump that experts attribute to the inauguration of President Donald Trump.
The latest FBI background check data show that gun sales in Arizona last year peaked at 44,887 in December, before plunging to 31,366 in January. That mirrored national sales, which hit a high of 2.8 million in December before falling to just over 2 million a month later.
But sales in March had bounced back to 38,170 in Arizona and 2.4 million nationally. |

Some lawmakers are working to remove the licensing requirement for concealed pistol carriers.
Rep. Triston Cole, R-Mancelona, has introduced bills to eliminate concealed pistol license, or CPL, laws.
Cole said he doesn’t want to make it easier to obtain a gun or loosen those regulations, but he wants to ensure that “law-abiding citizens” don’t need to jump through hoops to carry a concealed pistol for self-defense.
“The idea is to promote constitutional freedom,” Cole said. |

Almost three guns a day are stolen from vehicles in Memphis.
Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich said guns stolen from vehicles is an issue contributing to the violent crime in the city. Her office has been tracking the problem, and data from police showed that last year in Memphis, thieves stole 851 guns from vehicles in the city — a 38 percent increase from 2015.

Right-to-bear-arms advocates are pushing for one national law in support of carrying a concealed weapon. The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 was the topic of heavy discussion last night at an open forum held on Grand Island.
The act has been proposed for a number of years in different forms. Supporters say reciprocity would fix the current system of carrying laws that can vary from state to state and deny gun owners their right to self-defense wherever they travel. |

A bill that’s all but on Governor Mary Fallin’s desk, known as “point, don’t shoot,” would change current gun law to allow people to point their firearms at others without being charged with a crime.
Senate Bill 40, would make changes to an existing law that makes pointing a firearm a crime. So, the bill changes language to read "a person pointing a weapon at a perpetrator in self-defense or in order to thwart, stop or deter a forcible felony or attempted forcible felony..." can't be convicted of a crime for doing so. |

Guns are not a part of the culture of my homeland, except perhaps for the occasional Bollywood movie in which the bad guy meets his demise staring down the wrong end of a barrel.
My childhood in India was steeped in ahimsa, the tenet of nonviolence toward all living things.
The Indians may have succeeded in ousting the British, but we won with Gandhian-style civil disobedience, not a revolutionary war. |

Thanks to President Trump, we are now back to having a 5-4 pro-gun majority on the U.S. Supreme Court. He appointed Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, which means the Department of Justice will return to focusing on prosecuting violent criminals instead of targeting law-abiding gun owners. In Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, Trump has appointed a man who is firmly committed to protecting hunting and shooting as priority uses on our public lands. In fact, Zinke repealed one of Barack Obama’s most egregious anti-gun policies on his very first day on the job. |

But considering GOP control of Washington, one might have expected “concealed-carry reciprocity” – national legislation declaring that if you have a concealed carry permit in one state, is must be recognized by all other states — to have been either featured in President Trump’s 100 days agenda or rapidly approaching passage. The bill has 188 cosponsors in the House, but has been sitting in subcommittee since January. |

The city has lifted its ban on stun guns after a lawsuit challenging whether the local law was constitutional.
New Orleans resident John Ford sued the city over the ban, claiming it violated state law, as well as his Second Amendment right to bear arms.
Before the city changed its local ordinance, the New Orleans man was the only person in the city allowed to own a stun gun. It’s still illegal to own brass knuckles, switchblades, spring knives, spring guns, iron buckles, sandclubs and silencers. |

The Pennsylvania Senate will soon consider a bill that permits school districts to arm their school personnel. What could go wrong with allowing our teachers to pack heat in their kindergarten classrooms?
Schools are not a place for guns.
In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Gun-Free School Zones Act to ban unauthorized people from possessing guns on school property leaving the states to determine who the “unauthorized people”are. Since at least 1980, Pennsylvania has criminalized the possession of a gun on school grounds unless for “other lawful purpose” (e.g. an armed police officer being summoned to the school). |

News broke this week that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has reconsidered and “clarified” its Jan. 6, 2015 Open Letter on the use of stabilizing braces as shoulder stocks.
As we explained at the time, the ATF took the position in that letter that merely affixing the stabilizing brace to a pistol did not constitute the “making” of an NFA firearm. Firing the braced pistol from the shoulder, however, was held to constitute a “redesign” of the firearm that brought it under the jurisdiction of the National Firearms Act (NFA), with all the additional regulations that classification entails. |
