The Michigan State Capitol Commission will begin soliciting bids for metal detectors at each of the Capitol's entrances as it prepares to implement a blanket firearm ban for the building for the first time in its 145-year history.
The commission, tasked with overseeing management of the statehouse, authorized its executive director Friday to put out a request for purchasing weapons detection towers at five of the Capitol's main entrances.
The commission is expected to issue a ban on all firearms at the Capitol — including concealed pistols lawmakers sometimes carry — to take effect once the weapons detection devices are in place. |

A federal judge in southern Illinois on Friday issued an injunction blocking enforcement of the state’s new ban on many higher-powered firearms and large-capacity ammunition magazines, just days after a counterpart in Chicago ruled the opposite way.
The ruling came in a case that consolidated lawsuits brought by a variety of groups, including the Illinois State Rifle Association, against the law passed in the Democratic-controlled General Assembly and signed by Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker in January in response to the deadly mass shooting at last year’s Fourth of July parade in north suburban Highland Park. |

Things went from bad to worse for Washington state gun owners on April 25, when anti-Second Amendment Gov. Jay Inslee (D) signed a punitive ban on many common semi-automatic firearms.
As he did so Gov. Inslee chided each and every owner of the more-than-24-million semi-automatic rifles currently owned and used for hunting, sport shooting, competition and self-defense in the United States, by saying, “No one needs an AR-15 to protect your family. You only need it to kill other families.” |

The ink was barely dry from Washington Gov. Jay Inslee's signature on a ban on sales of certain semi-automatic weapons, when lawsuits to halt the new law were filed Tuesday.
The Silent Majority Foundation based in Pasco asked the Grant County Superior Court for an emergency temporary restraining order to stop the ban for up to 14 days.
It next will ask for a preliminary and permanent injunction.
Two other lawsuits were filed in federal court.
The National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action challenged the ban in Eastern Washington District U.S. Court.
And the Second Amendment Foundation in Bellevue asked the U.S. District Court in Western Washington for preliminary and permanent injunctions. |

Under HB1240, rifles that fire one bullet each time the trigger is pulled, and automatically reload a subsequent bullet into the chamber, (a semi-automatic rifle) will be illegal to purchase. Firearm owners who already possess a semi-automatic rifle will be grandfathered in, and have the ability to sell their firearm to a licensed retailer only, who may then sell it to an out-of-state buyer.
Washington is now the 10th state to ban firearms like the AR-15 and AK-47.
In addition to banning the widely used AR-15 style rifles, this bill also bans more than 60 firearms, even some semi-automatic pistols. |

While it's popularity may have risen and fallen over the years, the 1911 has always been a very viable self-defense firearm, and the new 1911s for 2023 continue that trend. New for 2023, though, is an increase in interest in double-stack 1911s, or 2011s as they are commonly called. Once the domain of a limited number of competitors in practical shooting, they have become a popular choice for law enforcement and the armed citizen. Here's what's new this year for both of these types of pistols. |

Defendants argue that the instant regulations implicate “unprecedented societal concerns” and “dramatic technological changes.”
This is what Judge Andrews hangs his decision on. He conflates the regulation of fully automatic firearms with semi-automatic firearms. He uses history from after 1900. He finds restrictions on concealed carry of Bowie knives to be similar to a ban on the ownership of semi-automatic rifles and pistols.
Then Judge Andrews states any deprivation of Second Amendment rights is not irreparable harm, as it is in First Amendment cases. |

Nashville Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., is dropping a bill to expand teachers’ Second Amendment rights and protect students from school shooters.
Ogles is introducing the Teachers Empowered Against Classroom Harm (TEACH) Act on Friday to establish a grant program to provide defensive firearms training programs to protect students from armed intruders.
"The TEACH Act would harden schools by allowing teachers and school staff the option to participate in defensive training programs aimed at protecting schools and their children," Ogles told Fox News Digital. |

Strike another blow for American exceptionalism! We are now the shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later capital of the world. How did we rise above the rest? Let me count the ways:
A black teenager is shot solely for coming to the wrong door. A 20-year-old white woman is shot and killed for turning into the wrong driveway. A six-year-old girl and her parents are shot after their basketball rolls into the shooter’s yard. Two cheerleaders are shot after one of them mistakenly tries to get into the wrong car. |

In a 29-page opinion, McGlynn acknowledged that the law was passed in the wake of a mass shooting at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park last year. But he said the “senseless crimes of a relative few” cannot be used to justify abridging the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens.
Citing a U.S. Supreme Court case that was decided less than two weeks before the Highland Park shooting, New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, he said the Constitution guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms for self-defense. |

Colorado's governor signed four gun control bills Friday, following the lead of other states struggling to confront a nationwide surge in violent crime and mass shootings, despite a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that expanded Second Amendment rights.
Before the ink was even dry on Gov. Jared Polis' signature, gun rights groups sued to reverse two of the measures: raising the buying age for any gun from 18 to 21, and establishing a three-day waiting period between the purchase and receipt of a gun. The courts are already weighing lawsuits over such restrictions in other states. |

The GOP-controlled state House passed a measure Friday night that would reduce the age — 21 down to 18 — for someone to legally purchase rifles, shotguns and other long guns. The measure would repeal what’s on the books related to the shooting massacre at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County five years ago.
The vote was 69-36.
However, the likelihood of the bill becoming law is dubious, because there’s no Senate version. |

Today the Vermont Senate gave preliminary approval to H.230, the gun violence prevention bill, on a vote of 21-9. This bill seeks to reduce gun violence and prevent deaths by suicide by instituting a negligent storage provision, expanding eligible petitioners for Extreme Risk Protection Orders to family or household members and creating a 72-hour waiting period for firearm transfers.
“Vermonters want sensible gun violence prevention laws,” said Senator Sears, chair of the Senate Committee on Judiciary. “H.230 will help reduce community violence, prevent suicides and save lives.” |

“Assault Weapons, as you know, like an AR-15 or Bushmaster, have tremendous power. Second Amendment proponents say, ‘I’m a responsible gun owner, I have this weapon. Yes, it’s powerful, but I’m entitled to have it,'” McKenna said. “Americans buy more of the most popular type of semi-automatic rifle, the AR-15, each year than the most popular type of automobile, the Ford F-150. And there are more AR-15-style rifles in private hands in America today than those that subscribe to all daily newspapers nationwide combined. |

A rash of bills in the North Carolina General Assembly seek to give the government more say over how banks do business.
Three bills passed the House Banking Committee at the state legislature Thursday, dictating who banks must do business with and what types of records they can or can’t keep.
House Bill 784 would make it illegal for banks to refuse to do business with a person or business due to concerns over factors such as their history of environmental violations, corruption, worker abuses, human rights violations and other issues. |

At a crowded mid-February rally in the rotunda of the Minnesota Capitol, First Lady Gwen Walz told a supportive crowd that DFL lawmakers would pass a broad agenda to limit guns. She cited policies like raising the minimum age to buy certain semiautomatic rifles and restricting the capacity of magazines.
“We will pass the legislation you’ve heard about,” said Walz, who is a prominent advocate for gun regulations. “If you want to purchase military-style firearms, why don’t you just join the military?” |

In a major victory for gun rights owners, U.S. District Judge Stephen McGlynn has granted a preliminary injunction of Illinois’ ban on assault weapons and large capacity magazines. The decision comes after two other district courts ruled in favor of the law — sending this issue to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and potentially the Supreme Court. These long-awaited challenges that will test the Democratic calls for removing all AR-15s and similar weapons, including calls from President Joe Biden. |

Stand your ground laws, however, authorize defensive violence without a duty to retreat, wherever a person may legally be. Some also expand the circumstances in which someone could use lethal force to defend property.
Although the laws appear to apply to all law-abiding citizens, research shows that they are not equitably enforced, and that they may be emboldening property owners to shoot first and question their actions later, even when they face no real threat of harm. |
