"Lawmakers on Capitol Hill heard testimony yesterday about a bill that would codify into law the Oath of Allegiance taken by new citizens and prevent changes to its wording unless made by Congress."
The current oath has five elements:
1 - support for the Constitution 2 - renunciation of prior allegiance 3 - defense of the Constitution against foreign and domestic enemies 4 - true faith and allegiance 5 - bearing arms or noncombatant service as required
"...[the new version] would drop the part about bearing arms and replace it with "I further commit myself to defend the Constitution and laws of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, either by military, noncombatant or civilian service." |

"On an average day in the U.S., guns are used to kill almost eighty people, and to wound nearly three hundred more. If any other consumer product had this sort of disastrous effect, the public outcry would be deafening; yet when it comes to guns such facts are accepted as a natural consequence of supposedly high American rates of violence."
"Private Guns, Public Health explodes that myth and many more, revealing the advantages of treating gun violence as a consumer safety and public health problem."
------- Note: Motor vehicle accidents kill over 120 people per day and wound 8,363 people per day. Where's the "deafening outcry"?
Note also that guns are used defensively about 2.5 million times each year. Assuming that only one life is at stake in each of those incidents (many times it's more than one), that would make 6,849 lives saved per day. |

A bill that would have banned the sale of 19 semiautomatic guns in Maryland was killed by a single vote Friday in a Senate committee. The Maryland Assault Weapons Ban of 2004 (Senate Bill 288) was intended to replace a federal ban on military-style guns that is set to expire in September and is not expected to be renewed by Congress.
Gun control advocates saw the bill as their last opportunity this year to strengthen Maryland's gun laws.
The measure was defeated 6-5. Three Democrats joined the three Republican members of the committee in voting against the ban.
