As the sole global superpower – America is the first and only country in history to dominate both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans – our country faces an existential crisis: How to manage the empire while still maintaining the ideals of the republic?

The decade of the 1980s was a time of great change in my personal circumstances. For the first five years, I was a working cop who spent almost all of his off-duty time fooling around with one kind of handgun or another. At the halfway point in the decade, I retired from law enforcement and went to work full-time for one of the several gun magazines headquartered in southern California. Throughout those 10 years, I also fueled my growing collection of pistols and revolvers by handloading for them.

There are some questions you can easily answer. One of them is Joe Biden’s stance on the Second Amendment. Here’s the quick scoop: He’s been hostile to our rights for over four decades. Biden, though, stands out for his unwavering opposition to modern multi-purpose semi-automatic firearms. In November, 2017, he expressly stated that Stephen Willeford, the heroic armed citizen who stopped the mass shooting in Sutherland Springs, should not have been able to buy the AR-15 he used to stop the attack.

In the aftermath of the February 2018 mass murder at a Parkland, Florida high school, it became readily apparent that danger signs and evidence abounded that a disturbed former student at the school was likely going to commit such a heinous crime. Despite local, state and federal law enforcement officials having possession of such knowledge, they failed to act on that information even though they had lawful and ready means to do so. |

Switzerland, where gun culture has deep roots, has managed to avoid the charged national debates over firearm ownership that have consumed other countries.
