A student-run group at California State University, Chico warned classmates to “be safe” and “avoid the area” Monday when a conservative student group held a pro-gun event on campus. The Gender and Sexuality Equity Center (GSEC), a student-run organization sponsored by student government, took to social media on Monday, issuing a “content warning” to alert students that the Chico State Republicans were broadcasting their support for the Second Amendment and inviting passersby to engage in discussions about the topic.

Colorado gun rights activists are likely to jam the city council meeting in Boulder this Thursday evening to weigh in on a controversial proposal to ban the sale and possession of so-called “assault weapons” and magazines that hold more than 10 cartridges, according to the Daily Camera.
One local gun retailer, Frederick Barton at Bison Tactical, one of two gun stores in the city, told Liberty Park Press that the proposal will likely get lots of opposition. It might also attract legal action. The council is actually going to formally set the meeting during its regular Tuesday evening session, with this explanation. |

Well, not necessarily a shocking announcement, given pro-gun Democrats usually buckle when the pressure becomes this intense: Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) is reversing his position on so-called assault weapons bans and magazine sizes. The Virginia Democrat is a moderate on the issue, earning a C rating from the National Rifle Association. Not the best, for sure—but one that used to be counted on for voting against his party’s ban on rifles they consider scary.

A Michigan sheriff won't face criminal charges for leaving his gun in a middle school.
Mecosta County Prosecutor Brian E. Thiede, through staff in his office, said he declined to authorize charges against Isabella County Sheriff Michael Main. Staff added Thiede found no statute had been violated when Main over the weekend of March 10-11 left his backup handgun in a locker room within Shepherd Middle School, 150 W. Hall St.
A sixth grader at the school had found the Glock 27 on a toilet paper dispenser the morning of Monday, March 12. The student immediately notified school officials, who in turn contacted Shepherd police.

Who is at fault for 17 dead children and staff in the Parkland, Florida high school? I assume you feel the same way I do and want to keep our children safe. That means we have to look at what worked to save lives at Parkland. We also have to see what failed in this latest murder. Without that examination, we’re likely to repeat our old mistakes. I don’t want political theater to get in the way of our children’s safety.
That is why we have to ask some tough questions. What worked, what failed this time, and what fails over and over? |

McGurl Jr. told jurors he had no choice in October 2016 but to stab the man he said was trying to beat him on the streets of Ashland. “He just kept coming at me,” McGurl said of Jordan M. Adams. “The next thing I remember ... is Mr. Adams kicking me in my face. I came up and started swinging my arm.” |

There is a reason the Roman Legion was one of the most-feared armies of its day. One Legion commander explained it with the quote: “Our training is bloodless battles and our battles are bloody training.” They trained like they fought, and mastered the tactics and equipment they would use. Our elite military units continue that training philosophy today. But, the value of that training concept isn’t confined to the military. Border Patrol legend Bill Jordan once recounted an instance where an officer got involved in a gunfight. His assailant was more than 100 yards away, armed with a rifle chambered in .30-30 Win. The officer only had a .38 Spl. revolver, but he was a highly skilled shooter who practiced regularly. |

A spike in the number of initiated background checks in March via the FBI’s National Instant Check System (NICS) reflects a significant increase in the number of people apparently interested in buying guns, and a major gun rights organization is crediting the wave of gun control hysteria following the shooting tragedy at a Florida high school.
“There is only one reason gun sales may have hit a new record high last month,” suggested Alan Gottlieb, founder and executive vice president of the Second Amendment Foundation, “and that’s the attack on Second Amendment rights that has reached a fever pitch. |

Second amendment rights and an open exchange of information about gun control was the topic of conversation and debate Monday, at a tabling event hosted by members of the Chico College Republicans. Michael Curry, executive director, of the group said he got the idea from a YouTuber, Steven Crowder, who made a video “I’m pro-gun, change my mind.” Curry said he thought it would be a good way to have an open conversation at Chico State. |

A gunman with an assault-style rifle five years ago entered a school in Newtown, Conn., and opened fire on students. It happened again during an outdoor concert in Las Vegas, a church service in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and classes in Parkland, Fla. A constant among the killings was the type of weapon. Mass shootings often bring a wide debate on firearms and particular focus on the AR-15-style rifle. But in Toledo, as in many cities, police typically seize illegally possessed handguns at a much greater rate than rifles or shotguns. |

The I.D. (Investigation Discovery) channel re-enacts real-life crime stories. I watched two stories in which single female homeowners heard men breaking into their homes. In both incidents, the best the unarmed women could do was grab their phones, hide in their closets like scared rabbits, and dial 911. My heart went out to the terrified, defenseless women. If they had had guns, the playing field would have been much more level. |

The debate over the merits and reach of the Second Amendment heats up with each mass shooting, but rarely does the conversation last more than a news cycle or two. But after the shooting at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the impassioned advocacy of the shooting's survivors, who through marches and public appearances are calling for stricter gun control, it seems the conversation may have more longevity than usual. |

Lawmakers tap Rutgers University, possibly as home for Firearm Violence Research Center that would study all facets of the issue. For years, the gun debate has been obscured by the fact that there is a dearth of objective research on the subject. Given that, New Jersey leaders are looking to build their own body of scientific research on gun violence — including the risks, impacts, and policy implications — based in part on a University of California program that was the first of its kind nationwide.

As one might expect, the mass shooting in Florida has led to endless commentary about the state of the nation and of the nation’s young in particular. Gun-control advocates predictably exploited the event to call for banning firearms, never questioning the laws already in place, the incompetence of law enforcement, or the effectiveness or plausibility of taking away everyone’s guns. Those in favor of gun ownership trotted out the same responses, and the point has since become mostly moot once more.

More than a dozen teenagers, many in ball caps and hooded sweatshirts, packed a sun-splashed meeting room of the Erie County Sportsmen’s League with their parents on March 25 for the start of the Fort LeBoeuf Trap Team’s inaugural season. They gathered at the Waterford Township facility for an orientation meeting, but also for a safety meeting, eight days in advance of their first practice and less than a month before the first of five weeks of competition. The agenda that Sunday included introducing the teens to the team’s head and assistant coaches, and going over lessons such as identifying different types of shotgun shells.

Paso Robles police responded to Paso Robles High School Thursday morning to investigate reports that a 16-year-old former student was circulating photos via the social media app Snapchat depicting himself holding a pistol and displaying rifles. Students screen-captured the photos and showed them to school officials. Police and school officials quickly determined the social media post did not pose a threat to PRHS. The police arrested the former student and another 15-year-old student at PRHS in connection with illegally possessing the pistol depicted in the post.
