I report on self-defense. This is what I’ve noticed. First, thousands of ordinary people defend themselves with a firearm every day. They are our friends, neighbors, and relatives, who were simply going about their lives when they had to defend themselves. Second, successful self-defense isn’t magic. The people who studied and practiced seemed to do a better job at it. Third, the reality of self-defense is very different from what we see in Hollywood media.
Here are some simple facts that leave this student of self-defense wanting to learn more. |

Consumers bought so many guns in past quarters that Smith and Wesson will see demand slow in this quarter. That’s according to Cowen and Company, which lowered expectations for Smith and Wesson ( SWHC -17.94% ) to market perform early Monday. That downgrade was followed by CL King, and BB&T Capital, who cut their rating on the stock to neutral and hold respectively—sending shares down 18%, nearly erasing the stock’s gains year-to-date. |

Reaching out to lend a helping hand, the Leadbelt Gun Club and the Desloge Police Department raised close to $1,000 through a shooting competition on Saturday to benefit the Special Olympics. “We raised exactly $650,” said Desloge Police Chief James Bullock. “We still have some possible donations coming in to help us close in on that $1,000.”

Last month, Students For Concealed Carry offered $5,000 to any “anti-campus carry conspiracy theorists” who could prove that pro-campus carry group is funded by Tea Party groups or large gun-rights groups like the NRA. The group described it as an "offer they can't refuse." Which may have been a bit of an overstatement, given that on April 1, the student gun group proudly announced that no one had taken them up on that $5,000 offer — a pretty sizable amount for a non-profit group that reportedly doesn’t even pay its leading activists. |

The Missouri House Emerging Issues Committee approved a revised version of a bill that would allow conceal-and-carry permit holders to carry guns on college campuses. The approval didn't come without compromise. The newest version of the bill would not allow people to have guns inside dormitory rooms. That change came after testimony from the bill's critics, like administrators at Missouri State University.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has found the “no guns” signage at the Dallas County government center in northwest Dallas to be in violation of state law, putting the county at risk of legal action and thousands of dollars in fines. The county has long had a gun ban at the government center on Marsh Lane, since it houses justice of the peace and truancy courts. County officials have defended their interpretation of state law that they can ban guns in the entirety of a building that contains a government court.

For some in Michigan, having guns around was just an everyday part of life. Now, they feel like they need to carry them all the time due to increased security concerns. It’s not terrorism, just a string of rather violent incidents. At least that was the case for Scott and Cherie McCullough, especially after Jason Brian Dalton, an Uber driver, went on a rampage that killed 6 people in February, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Recently I underwent hip replacement surgery. Prior to that I had back surgery. To say my mobility has been compromised for a while would be an understatement. Let’s face it, as we age our ability to move—our athleticism—is lessened. But does that mean we must forfeit our right to defend ourselves from evildoers? I’d say not.

Introduced by Remington in the mid-1800s, one disguised firearm definitely blended into one’s environment. A cane was common accessory for a gentleman, even if he were able bodied. It wasn’t so much about walking stability, though if you’ve ever traversed a cobblestone street, stability can be an issue for anyone. Other reasons included making a fashion statement AND aiding personal defense. Hide a firearm in a walking stick like this one, and defensive posture kicks up a few notches. It’s all very Sherlock Holmes-esque, isn’t it?

We’ve already seen guns on drones, even flamethrowers, so it was really only a matter of time before someone went and attached a chainsaw. The stuff of sweat-drenched nightmares, the terrifying “chainsaw drone” is apparently the work of a pair of “crazy” Finnish farmers.
