AK: Gun control bill stalls in Alaska House committee amid opposition from NRA

The sole gun control bill working its way through the Alaska Legislature this year has stalled amid opposition from the National Rifle Association. But a key House lawmaker says he's still trying to draft a compromise that can address the organization's concerns.

Anchorage Democratic Rep. Matt Claman said Tuesday that he's talking with the group's lobbyist, along with members of the House Judiciary Committee that Claman chairs, in an attempt to advance House Bill 75.

The legislation, sponsored by Anchorage Democratic Rep. Geran Tarr, aims to limit access to guns for people deemed dangerous by police officers or judges — before they can commit a crime.

A string of burglaries happened in Marshall, Indiana late last week.

One homeowner took matters into his own hands by firing shots at one of the suspects. Nobody was hurt during the incident.

However, it prompted the Parke County Sheriff's Office to make a Facebook Post concerning the "Stand Your Ground" law.

It began when Jacob's wife was heading home Friday and confronted by Prosser and Jacob's mother, Da'nel.

"She was on her way home and she encountered a dark vehicle on the side of the road," said Burdett's Attorney Mark Coleman. "She didn't recognize the vehicle. As she tried to go around it, they pulled out, blocked her way. Da'Nel got out of the vehicle started banging on the car, threatening 'I'm going to kill you'."

In January, the court granted Jacob Burdett and his wife guardianship of his 10-year-old sister. It's caused countless confrontations and family rifts.

Yesterday, the New York Times’ Nick Kristof posted a column that purported to tell his largely progressive readership “how to win an argument about guns.” I’m interested to read good arguments from the other side, so I clicked eager to find how Kristof would best an informed gun-rights advocate in debate.

The short answer, it turns out, is that he wouldn’t.

The column’s pattern is simple: Kristof posits a primitive caricature of a gun-rights argument, delivers a thoroughly inadequate response designed to settle the issue, and then repeats the cycle. In other words, he erects one straw man after another and fails to best any of them.

Organizers have planned a peaceful, bipartisan demonstration "Rally for our Rights" in Loveland this Saturday to support the right to keep and bear arms.

Event coordinators David Huntwork and Lesley Hollywood have scheduled the rally for 1-3 p.m. at the southeast corner of Lake Loveland, just off U.S. 34.

"With the overarching anti-gun sentiment spreading across this country, I felt it was important to show a differing point of view," Hollywood said. "To show citizens of Northern Colorado that we don't all agree, and to give pro-Second Amendment advocates a place to come together. You don't even have to own guns to support the right to self defense, and I expect there will be many people like that there."

No, forget handguns or rifles. That reliable ancient Chinese art of self-defense, “Shot Gun,” is the way to go.

There are also some, if fewer, good reasons, to own rifles and handguns. But semiautomatic assault-style weapons? Not if you are a civilian.

I have to admit the Mossberg 12-gauge was overkill. Chris Eger, writing for Guns.com, described it:

“It looks like a rifle large enough to part a meteor, sink a battleship, or down a MIG with one shot. The reason is, it’s actually a shotgun, which explains the huge barrel but not the action. Yes, it has a bolt-action, and Mossberg has been the master of these oddball guns for decades.”

All of you students enjoy serene lives in a country whose predecessors gained you this serenity through courage and sacrifice that few of you could comprehend. Before you think you know best about character, self-defense or right from wrong reread the history of modern genocides — then think hard about giving up your right to bear arms capable of offering you a choice to respond.

In Cambodia, genocide did not always use bullets. Often the government killed defenseless people with hammers. You can decide to be sheep, naive to real peril and there are many happily willing to march you to slaughter … or you can learn from history and remain a potent adversary. Life is no fairytale — really. Be afraid of being defenseless.

Smith & Wesson this week introduced a new flavor to their roster of M&P Bodyguard snub-nosed revolvers that deletes the laser, changes the styling, and drops the price.

Morgan did his best to again change the subject by tweeting: “2A was about arming people as part of a well-regulated militia -- not as a bunch of unregulated Rambos.”

The student fired back: “So you don’t bother to read federalist papers? Not your thing?”

Once again, the British activist tried to move in another direction: “Have you studied the history of 2A? Try reading up on it. It was never intended to mean an individual’s right to bear arms -- outside of a ‘well-regulated militia.’”

Up to a half-million people were expected in Washington, D.C., Saturday for the March for Our Lives, a demonstration advocating school safety, organized by the survivors of last month’s school shooting in Parkland, Fla. Among those planning to join the cause were several student-activists from southern West Virginia.

EPIC, an after-school group at Sherman High School in Boone County, stands for “empowered prioritized intelligent chicks” -- and they’ve been busy. Some members helped to organize a march to support striking teachers earlier this month, and one recent weekday, they nibbled on doughnuts and fruit snacks as they made packing lists and finalized travel plans to D.C.

A Senate committee gave the first stamp of approval to a bill that would raise the purchasing age for assault rifles in Louisiana.

"AK-47, Uzi, AR-15, the type of weapons that we’ve seen used in Florida, in Columbine, in Las Vegas and so many others," Sen. Troy Carter (D-New Orleans) explained to a Senate Judiciary committee Tuesday.

Senator Carter’s bill would increase the buying age from 18 to 21. Anyone under 21 could still own and use assault weapons, but they wouldn't be able to purchase them.

The Lawrence Police Dept. has released the name of the man shot and killed during an overnight confrontation on a home's front porch.

Investigators say the owners of the home, in the 1900 block of Connecticut Street, awoke around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday to the sounds of someone on their porch. The man who lived there grabbed a gun and went outside where he found Trevor J. Mohawk.

Police say Mohawk, 32, and the homeowner started fighting and, in the course of the struggle, Mohawk was shot. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his wounds.

If their main concern is being safe in their school, one of the fathers from Parkland gave them an easy answer. He stated we had one instance of planes being hijacked and we immediately solved the problem. So looking at that issue in the same light, the students and parents need to start demonstrating for making their individual school safe. That is the simple solution to making our children and grandchildren safe at school.

Unfortunately, students will have to go through metal detectors to enter the school. Classroom doors need to be fortified to prevent entry to the classroom. Bulletproof glass needs to be installed in all windows.

The Chicago suburb of Deerfield, Illinois voted on Monday to ban the possession, sale, and manufacture of assault weapons and large capacity magazines to "increase the public's sense of safety." What's more, CBS Chicago reports, anyone refusing to give up their banned firearm will be fined $1,000 a day until the weapon is handed over or removed from the town's limits.

The ordinance states, "The possession, manufacture and sale of assault weapons in the Village of Deerfield is not reasonably necessary to protect an individual's right of self-defense or the preservation or efficiency of a well-regulated militia."

An unalienable right is one that cannot be taken away from nor given away by its possessor. If you accept God-given unalienable rights, then you accept the ultimate obligation to protect and defend them. Unalienable rights are, therefore, inextricably linked to that original right of self-defense, which is paramount to all positive forms of government.

Perhaps Cordray’s biggest vulnerability has to do with guns. The push for more restrictions has gained new energy after the February school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Some of the high school students who survived the massacre have been calling out the National Rifle Association, Congress and state legislatures for stalling what they see as common-sense gun restrictions.

Though much of the Democratic base is itching to take on the gun lobby, Cordray is having to live with his past courtship of it. One of his opponents, former Cleveland Mayor Dennis Kucinich, has been pushing a video of Cordray speaking to a Second Amendment rally on the Statehouse steps while he was still attorney general in 2010.

Our moral, ethical, and intellectual betters keep telling us that if we lived in a world without guns, nobody would ever get shot. This is true, in the same sense that if we lived in a world without cars, nobody would ever get run over by a car. (You'd also have to get your pizza delivered on horseback, and the toppings would get stuck to the top of the box from all the jostling, but whatever.) If we want to stop gun crime, just get rid of guns, right? "Wave a magic wand and make all the guns in the world disappear" is a liberal's idea of a policy prescription.

I understand and agree with you when you say “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” But I don’t understand why you can’t see that the bullets shot from guns are ultimately what are ending people’s lives. Yes, there are many alternative weapons, including things like knives, but the top choice seems to be firearms when ending others’ lives is what one is striving for. Therefore, making it more difficult for a gun to be in the hands of the uncommon owner will lessen the deaths of innocent children and adults.

Mass shooting gun violence keeps happening, and common sense gun restrictions seems to be impossible to pass.

It's amazing that it appears that young motivated teenagers from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School lit the match that may break through the chatter, when the death of 20 six- and seven-year-olds at Sandy Hook did not.

We have to be real. If politicians want to significantly affect the outcome of recent mass shootings, the only true solution is to ban assault weapons, restrict high capacity magazines and implement and fund universal background checks.

That’s why it’s so momentous that, this year, Florida lawmakers reversed course and passed a real gun control law for the first time since the GOP assumed control of Tallahassee two decades ago.

Here’s what the law does: raises the age to buy guns from 18 to 21; imposes a three-day waiting period for the purchase of long guns; bans the sale or purchase of “bump stocks” (which allow semi-automatic rifles to mimic fully automatic weapons); and adds Florida to the list of states with a “red flag” law, allowing police to petition a court to temporarily seize ammunition and guns for up to one year from someone who poses a significant danger to himself or others.

Firearm enthusiasts share a common affliction when viewing popular culture. We’re infamous for nitpicking poor gun handling and incongruous sound effects in TV shows and movies. One of the more common, egregious mistakes is hearing the distinctive "shik-shik!" of a 12-gauge pump being actuated when the shotgun in question is a double-barrel. Well, with the Standard Manufacturing Co. DP-12, we can't pick that particular nit.
