On Mpnday, the Cornell Law chapters of the Federalist Society, Second Amendment Club, and American Constitution Society partnered to bring Adam Skaggs and Robert F. Turner to campus for a talk entitled “The Gun Control Debate.” While the two men come from very different backgrounds, there was a shockingly small amount of back-and-forth debate.

Sixteen years ago, Steven Pappas was nearly beaten to death near the Mexican border by four men who tried to steal his wallet. Afterward, the La Palma resident often thought of buying a gun for self-protection and trying to obtain a concealed weapons permit to legally carry it. But for years he didn’t bother pursuing it. “I was always told it was very hard to get,” said Pappas, 39. |

As a 72-year-old American, I am constantly and consistently shocked at the lack of knowledge of the Bill of Rights, especially the Second Amendment. We learned about groups like the Minute Men militia in junior high school.
Many my age will remember these quotes from some of the founders of our nation. This list comes in part from a recent edition of the NRA American Hunter magazine:

A South African company is gearing up for a big “Shot Show” weapons expo in Johannesburg next year, but don’t be fooled by the name. Organized by SA Events Corp., the "South Africa Shot Show 2017" promises to be "the dynamic expo for professionals in the tactical and firearms" industries, with more than 500 exhibitors and more than 50,000 attendees expected, according to a press release. |

It isn’t always easy being a lefty in a right-handed world, and the realm of firearms is no exception. When it comes time to purchase a new gun there are many factors to consider—cost, reliability, weight, fit and finish, ergonomics, size, etc. And for those, like myself, who are lucky enough to be members of the sacred fraternity of left-handedness, gun buying also requires a few additional considerations.

Here are three more examples of armed self-defense that happened within the last month. These examples show people who not only stopped criminals and saved lives, but some of these armed victims may have stopped mass murder! Armed civilians like you saved lives until the police could come and make an arrest.
So tell me, were these honest civilians lucky.. or were they prepared? |

In a roller-coaster bond case that had prosecutors crying foul, a Detroit man accused of stashing a stockpile of loaded guns, drugs and "Snitch Wanted" posters in his house is locked up after a federal appeals court concluded that he is too dangerous to be free, and that a lower court erred in granting him bond. |

Though it is sometimes seen as the red-headed stepchild of Cold War-era small arms, the 7.62x39mm Czechoslovak vz. 58 has a dedicated following in the United States and beyond. Viewed by the misinformed as “just another AK,” the gun is a unique design that utilizes a striker firing mechanism and a short-stroke gas piston. At last week’s Big 3 East event in Daytona Beach, Florida, Definitive Arms and RS Regulate revealed the results of a collaborative effort for the platform: the DARS VZ side rail. |

When John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, an autopsy was performed, even though the cause of death, massive injuries due to gunshot wounds, was obvious and witnessed, even recorded. The autopsy was done because it was required. When Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia passed away Feb. 13, no autopsy was performed, even though he died unexpectedly and alone at night. His demise wasn’t noticed until hours after it occurred.

The official line of the Senate Republican leadership is that Judge Merrick Garland, President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, isn’t entitled to a hearing or a confirmation vote not because of his qualifications (or lack of them) but because there is a presidential election this year. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) put it this way: "The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president."

An open forum lead to strong arguments in Kalamazoo on Monday. The topic: gun control; a sensitive issue in the area coming just weeks after the mass shooting that killed six people an injured two others. The big question asked at the forum: is gun violence directly connected to gun access? The discussion drew a clear line in the sand between the two sides, made clear by a question and answer session.

By now, most of you are probably aware of the latest massacre to befall the West. Terrorists in Brussels attacked the airport and a metro train station, killing 32 innocent people, including several Americans. Unfortunately, the attack is one of many, following the one in San Bernardino, California, months ago, the November 2015 attack in Paris that took 130 lives of diners and concert goers, and the very latest, on Easter Sunday, that took the lives of 72, mostly women and children enjoying Easter festivities at a public park and playground in Pakistan.

Politicizing tragedies to push an agenda is an old tune in government policy that both sides of the political spectrum are guilty of. It would be hypocritical of me to argue how strict voting laws are unconstitutional in one column while not addressing problems in gun-control legislation prompted after mass-shootings. The Second Amendment shouldn’t be a partisan issue. Anyone who argues for one part of the Constitution should not shy away from arguing for another part just because they don’t like it.

So do you think guns should be allowed at the Republican National Convention? Granted, the question is moot. On Monday, the Secret Service announced that only its agents and Cleveland police will be allowed to bring firearms into Quicken Loans Arena when the GOP assembles there this summer. But “moot” is not the same as irrelevant.

Churches could let some members carry guns inside to protect the congregation under a bill heading to Gov. Phil Bryant. House Bill 786 would allow places of worship to designate members to undergo firearms training and carry guns to protect the congregation. The bill would also allow people to carry guns in holsters without a concealed weapons permit. |

Over try to bring a gun into the U.S. House of Representatives or any U.S. Senate office? How about any state legislative chamber or governor's office? I would not recommend that you try to do this or you are likely to get arrested or, as we observed last week in our nation's capital, you may be shot by police or other security personnel guarding our local, state and national representatives. |

Colby Sue Weathers shot and killed her father in 2012 on the day that she bought the gun. She has schizophrenia and later was committed to a state mental institution. Weathers' mother Janet Delana had asked Odessa Gun & Pawn not to sell her daughter the gun. |

Resistance to sudden violence, for the preservation not only of my person, my limbs, and life, but of my property, is an indisputable right of nature which I have never surrendered to the public by the compact of society, and which perhaps, I could not surrender if I would. — JOHN ADAMS |
