NRA Media Relations Director Amy Hunter stressed to host Joel Pollak on Breitbart News Sunday that gun stores are essential because “acquisition” of a firearm is part of what the Second Amendment protects. Hunter said, “You can’t tell people that they have the ability to protect themselves, that they have a right to self-defense, and then eliminate the way in which they can practice that right. Acquisition is every bit a part of the Second Amendment.” |

Thus begins what is, in my opinion, history’s greatest piece of literature. The inspired prose following defines humanity’s place in the universe, elucidates our timeless plight, and then illuminates the subsequent path to salvation. However, all this incredible stuff started with a single phrase. Everything of significance has to start someplace.

I love playing with firearms, but I hate carrying them and have tried most every conceivable carry option. If the objective standard is comfort, then they all pretty much suck. Enter CCW Breakaways. CCW Breakaways are pants with a pair of reinforced adjustable holsters built in. Fold the bottom up and secure it with Velcro to optimize the holster for your particular carry gun. Just slide your hand into your pocket, grasp your hidden handgun, and pop your wrist forward to breakaway the garment and present your firearm. |

This COVID-19 event with all the ramifications of shutdowns, shelter-in-place orders, and even statewide lockdowns has a lot of people and businesses confused. While we are still able to access food suppliers, pharmacies, medical clinics and such, there are other businesses that appear to be in gray areas. You have to read the federal and individual state orders carefully to be certain what businesses are open and those that are not. |

An inmate in a Weld County, Colo., prison filed a “red-flag” petition in February against the sheriff in charge of the facility, Steve Reams. The inmate claimed the deputies working at the prison were intimidating the inmates in their “residence” by carrying shotguns. A judge immediately dismissed the inmate’s petition, but the flagged sheriff, who has been an outspoken opponent of the new law, said the incident further proves how problematic it is.

No matter how one looks at the National Instant Check System (NICS) data for March, last month saw a stunning rush on gun stores with what appears to have been a lot of first-time gun buyers in the mix, and now the question will be whether the trend continues for April.
According to data from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the NSSF-adjusted figure of 2,375,525 NICS checks was “an increase of 80.4 percent compared to the March 2019 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,317,114. |

As possible geopolitical and national security ramifications of limiting ties with China post-coronavirus are weighed, it is important to point out that the U.S. military ammunition supply is not China-dependent. On March 20, 2020, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) sent a letter to the Department of Defense in which the critical role of domestic firearm and ammunition manufacturers was emphasized. |

Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary, along with a number of other openly anti-gun legislators, sent a letter to Governor Larry Hogan asking him to reverse his earlier decision acknowledging gun stores as critical businesses during this COVID-19 crisis. They find it “disturbing” that numerous Marylanders are choosing to exercise their right to self-defense for the first time and want Gov. Hogan to shut off access to this constitutional right by closing gun stores. |

While much in the world has been suspended or stopped, our efforts to protect and defend the Second Amendment must go on. While we all know the most effective methods of communicating with voters about an upcoming election involve person-to-person interaction, current circumstances make that near impossible. Thus, we must adapt and adjust to make sure we are utilizing all the tools in our grassroots toolbox to make sure our fellow Second Amendment supporters are kept updated on the importance of the 2020 elections, as well as all issues pertaining to our firearm freedoms. And as always, our efforts to engage voters is highly dependent on you! |

We all suspected that gun sales for March would be up but now we have the numbers to prove it. Americas bought an estimated (not all NICS checks represent one gun purchase) 2.5 million firearms in March of 2020. This represents a more than 80% increase in sales over March 2019 or about one million more guns sold than the previous March.

Success is like fine art: Hard to define, but you know it when you see it. With firearms, one accepted measure is how long they have been around and how many units have been sold. The Remington 870 shotgun comes to mind; introduced in 1950, it’s sold more than 12 million units. Same with Glock; it’s been around 36 years and sold about a bazillion (which I believe is the official number). These guns can safely be called successful. But what of those guns with a shorter timeline? Can we define or at least predict their success? |

Another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic that no one saw coming: hunting. While consumer demand for firearms is at record level, and while non-essential activities have been shut down in most states, it is no surprise that Americans would be looking forward to hunting seasons. Hunting is a perfect opportunity to be outside, alone or in small groups, enjoying nature and perhaps being able to bring home local game meat for yourself or to donate to others.
