Poor Parenting To Blame for Gun Control Debate

"As a child, I was taught proper gun safety. To this day, I can still remember this animated eagle telling me to never touch a gun and, if I saw one, to immediately notify an adult. My dad used to take me to gun shows ... in this matter at least, as a fairly well-adjusted nonviolent person ... I consider myself a testament to the fact that guns do not kill people - some people kill people. But mostly, the catalyst of all this mayhem is bad parenting." ...

"Really, it all comes down to education. Guns, the NRA and the Second Amendment are not the enemy. They don’t advocate murder or school shootings. ..."

"'Well, what if his kid finds it and uses it as a toy and gets his head blown off?' Then his father was tragically irresponsible. No one is ever too young to learn gun safety. ..." ...

"Gun Owners of America is nonpartisan and I would frankly welcome a sincere competition for the votes of gun owners by candidates of every political party."

"But a sincere competition, or even a factually accurate campaign for our votes, is not quite what Jarding and Saunders are interested in waging. They treat the Second Amendment right to bear arms as a mere marketing problem for Democrats."

"They note, correctly, that 'the negative publicity on guns ... has tended to hurt down-ballot Democrats on the gun issue.'" ...

"Another memorial to those killed and wounded on that awful day is less visible or tangible but powerful nonetheless: Australia's nationally uniform gun laws. Out of horror and insanity, something positive and rational was forged."

"Ten years later it is hard to believe the indifference to public safety embodied in the old gun laws. In those days civilians could buy military weapons and there was no limit on the number of guns an individual could stockpile. NSW, Queensland and Tasmania had no registration for rifles and shotguns, so it was impossible for the police to know if someone had a gun (or 10)." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A Tucson man will spend three years on probation for shooting his neighbor's dog, but he says he'd do it again under the same circumstances.

Ralph Edwin Adamson shot at two dogs in October, wounding one so badly it had to be put to sleep.

The 50-year-old told the judge who sentenced him Friday that he had seen two pit bulls chasing someone down his street and shot in self-defense.

Prosecutors disagreed and charged him with four felonies, including endangering dog owner Tierra Grady, who says she was chasing her dogs to get them back in her yard.

Grady says it infuriates her that Adamson says he shot to protect someone. She says no one was in danger.

Adamson also was ordered to stay from the dog's owner and not to own guns. [emphasis added]
