"According to Pushpinder Saini, the Parole Board's barrister, 'it would have been irrational for the Board to ignore the risks to such persons [ie burglars]'. It is not, apparently, irrational to ignore the risks to ordinary, law-abiding citizens when the impression is given that the law exists only to protect criminals. Indeed, the logic of the Parole Board's decision is that all householders should be incarcerated, for any one of us might represent at least a theoretical risk to the burglar as he goes about his unlawful business." |

"In return, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals will stop sending protesters in chicken suits to KFC's corporate headquarters in Louisville and will pull back advertisements that had accused the fast-food chain of 'Kentucky Fried Cruelty.' "As President Bush's support for renewing the law reflects, the "assault weapon" ban is widely seen as the very model of reasonable gun control. Yet it is based on arbitrary distinctions unrelated to public safety or crime control."
"The anti-gun lobby decided to target firearms that look like military weapons for tactical reasons. As the VPC's Josh Sugarmann observed in 1988, "The weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons—anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun—can only increase that chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons."
"The VPC continues to capitalize on this confusion. 'Civilian assault weapons,' it says, 'are semiautomatic versions of military weapons designed to rapidly lay down a wide field of fire—often called 'hosing down' an area.' Contrary to the impression left by that ambiguous statement, so-called assault weapons fire once per trigger pull, like any other semiautomatic."
"Functionality aside, are 'assault weapons' especially popular with criminals? Police statistics from across the country indicate that they represent 2 percent to 3 percent of guns used in crimes." |

"Still, the Democrats declare that only police and military should have guns. They keep passing new laws that only affect law-abiding citizens and make criminals out of women who only want to protect themselves from predators. They have passed waiting periods, gun-buyer testing and one-gun-a-month laws that don't affect criminals. Why should they when they can buy a stolen gun from a car trunk in a parking lot?"
"Voters need to wake up and realize that 'stuff happens' and no gun law will miraculously stop criminal gun use or occasional gun accidents. Get rid of any politician who advocates more gun control laws, because such laws only weaken our ability to protect ourselves."

"The state Supreme Court has opted to rule on a New Haven judge’s determination that taxi drivers can carry guns in their cabs even if they don’t have permit to carry."

Yesterday, bills to renew the semi-automatic "assault weapons" ban were introduced in both the House and Senate, each with a handful of co-sponsors. The Senate version is slightly more restrictive than the current ban, while the House version is significantly broader.
According to a Washington Times story today, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) is very confident that neither version will not pass in the House of Representatives.
"The House in the past has taken a dim view of the assault-weapons ban. I would say that the majority leader is pretty skeptical of reauthorizing it, as is the House as a whole," DeLay spokesman Stuart Roy said.
"It has zero chance," he added, also mentioning that any attempt by the Senate to tack a renewal onto a bill supported by the House is also likely to fail. "It's technically possible to do that, but just about on the verge of being impossible." |

A collection of firearms that once belonged to the late Bears running back Walter Payton will be auctioned off in Morris on June 22, organizers have announced.

"Gun control is one of those notions that seems to make sense on the surface; that reasonable people are initially inclined to accept; that seems to offer an easy solution to a difficult problem. That is the problem with gun control. It is wishful thinking: simplistic, naïve, even juvenile."
"It is typical liberal thinking: social problems can be solved by putting words on paper in state and federal statute books. And not only liberals: the Bush administration has upset the National Rifle Association by agreeing to legislation that would extend the ban on semi-automatic firearms that were previously in use for decades and are virtually never used in crimes."
"Whenever you hear about bans of this or that weapon, remember that no word on paper ever changed human nature. There are bad people out there who will prey on good people. They will not be deterred by words on paper in Albany, N.Y. or Washington. Good people, however, wishing to obey the law, will be deterred. That is why muggers, rapists and murderers know that in gun control havens like New York City and Washington, citizens are virtually helpless against them." |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
We'll take one step at a time, and the first is necessarily - given the political realities - very modest. We'll have to start working again to strengthen the law, and then again to strengthen the next law and again and again. Our ultimate goal, total control of handguns, is going to take time. The first problem is to slow down production and sales. Next is to get registration. The final problem is to make possession of all handguns and ammunition (with a few exceptions) totally illegal. — Pete Shields, founder of Handgun Control, Inc., New Yorker Magazine, June 26, 1976, pg. 53 |
