How should we protect our children at school? Asking biased questions leads to inappropriate answers as we work to protect our children. We’ve seen special interests, including government officials, do exactly that.

Here is a more moderate perspective on protecting our kids.

A Detroit police officer was in court Wednesday on charges stemming from a shooting incident at a wedding reception.

Diamond Greenwood, 26, was allegedly drunk when it happened.

Greenwood is accused of whipping out her gun at a wedding reception and her brother is accused of firing it. Witnesses described the chaos during the preliminary exam for Greenwood and 24-year-old Duane Catchings.

"We see a gun being displayed," said the witness.

Attorney: "Who did you see displaying the gun?

"This woman right here," he said.

Attorney: "Can you describe how Ms. Greenwood was displaying the gun?"

"In the air," the witness said.

Catchings is facing charges of discharging a firearm at a building and felon in possession.

Under a proposed rewrite of state crime laws, Alaska legislators would require the courts to review for a federal database system records dating to 1981 for individuals who have been involuntarily committed and would be restricted from owning firearms.

While debates over guns elicit fears of erosions of the Second Amendment right to bear arms, this provision has generated few waves. Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy's administration is pushing it as a way to prevent future violence or suicides. National Rifle Association spokesman Lars Dalseide by email said that group "has always called for the submission of all relevant records" to the system "and that position hasn't changed."

Two armed murderers entered a school south of Denver yesterday. One thing we know is that this attack doesn’t come as a surprise. We consciously chose to protect our children with plastic signs that said no-guns allowed.

We know better. I trained with armed teachers.

Thank you to all the Louisiana NRA supporters who made the trip to Indiana this year to attend the 2019 NRA Annual Meeting. And to all of those who couldn’t make it, we missed you!

But don’t worry, we’re making sure you don’t miss out on one of the highlights: When your representative, Whip Steve Scalise, addressed the crowd. The men and women gathered in Indianapolis were honored to hear from one of America’s heroes.

Controversy has swirled around the National Rifle Association of late.

Infighting that led to the ouster of Oliver North as the group’s president, its tenuous financial landscape and an investigation launched by the New York attorney general are just a few of the problems that have recently garnered attention.

Critics argue that nuisance ordinances encourage landlords to downplay their tenants’ problems. “We suggested she obtain a gun and kill him in self-defense, but apparently she hasn’t,” a landlord in Milwaukee wrote to the police after a woman called 911 for help, according to Matthew Desmond’s book Evicted, which examines nuisance ordinances in that city about a decade ago. “Therefore, we are evicting her.” In Euclid, Ohio, after a woman ran to a neighbor, bleeding, and asked him to call the police on her abusive boyfriend, the city deemed her property a nuisance, writing that she was “involved in a pattern of behavior that is disruptive to her neighbors and places an undue burden on the resources of the Euclid Police Department.”

“The attacker arrived minutes after our minor daughters walked back to the hotel room on their own. The man knocked on the door, saying he was there to fix a broken sink,” the statement read. “Scott indicated the sinks were not broken as far as he was aware, but that the man was free to have a look. Like any of us would, he trusted a hotel staff person in uniform.”

Kintner said Hapgood was “attacked without warning in his family’s hotel room by a maintenance worker who was armed and demanding money.”

She said the father acted in self-defense to “protect the lives of his young daughters and himself,” the Connecticut Post reported.

Public hearings are set for Friday on several gun control bills ranging from prohibiting the sale of high-capacity magazines to instituting 72-hour waiting periods for gun buyers.

State lawmakers say they're concerned about suicides linked to firearms.

But gun rights groups say the push for background checks for private sales and court orders requiring certain individuals to surrender guns, infringes on Maine's constitutional right to "keep and bear arms."

The NRA began by posting a tweet with a question for Watts, “Shannon Watts deceptively cherry picks NRAIL article. What she leaves out is that all centerfire rifle ammunition pierces soft body armor. So to be clear, Shannon, you want to ban all rifle ammunition used for self-defense, sport, and hunting?”

As a result of the posts shared by the NRA, Watts has been bombarded with death threats against herself and her family, and then mocked by the organization for deleting the threatening comments.

Now that Nash’s name has been spiked, those environmental groups say his big-game hunting was never the real issue. The real issue, they say, is that Gov. Brown had a rare opportunity to change the culture at the top of her fish and wildlife agency and instead chose not to.

“It was easy for everyone to focus on Nash because of the nature of those photos and how they captured public outrage,” said Quinn Read, Northwest Director for Defenders of Wildlife. “But to focus on him is to miss the larger point, and that is that Governor Brown put forth a slate of commissioners that are going to let industry direct fish and wildlife policy.”

The Vermont legislative session is nearing the finish line, and an anti-gun bill that was being heavily and rapidly pushed months ago has fallen off the pace as gun owners have persistently expressed opposition to the bill. However, anti-gun groups are now feverishly and desperately trying to push the bill through in the waning hours of session, pleading with anti-gunners to contact their lawmakers. Worse yet, they are trying to make S.169 even stronger to include a 72-hour waiting period on all guns, not just handguns. Please call 802-828-2228 and politely leave a message for House Speaker Mitzi Johnson to OPPOSE S.169.

Yesterday, the Senate Executive Committee held a hearing to consider a package of gun control bills. During this hearing, a significant number of Second Amendment supporters attended and testified in opposition to Senate Bills 68, 70, and 82. In fact, so many law-abiding gun owners turned up that the committee was unable to hear all of the scheduled testimony. During this hearing, committee members did not take a vote on the package of anti-gun bills, but they could be brought up for a vote at any time. It is important that you continue to contact members of the Senate Executive Committee and strongly urge them to OPPOSE Senate Bill 68, Senate Bill 70, and Senate Bill 82.

According to Philadelphia Police Department Spokesperson Captain Sekou Kinebrew, the would-be intruder threatened the neighbor.

"The person whose identity we don't know went into his waistband, and the citizen who does have a permit to carry produced his firearm and fired in the direction of the would-be burglar," Kinebrew said.

On May 8th, Governor Jay Inslee signed into law a number of anti-gun bills that had been passed by the Legislature during the 2019 Legislative Session.

House Bill 1465, sponsored by Representative Roger Goodman (D-45), will require CPL holders to undergo a state background check on handgun purchases instead of the instant NICS check that is currently being conducted as a courtesy by the FBI. Unfortunately, beginning July 1st, the FBI will no longer be conducting these courtesy NICS checks for CPL holders.

The story of Wild Bill Hickok’s life is so full of legend and myth that it would be difficult for anyone to sift through it all to reveal the absolute truth, yet that is what Tom Clavin claims to do in his new work, “Wild Bill: The True Story of the American Frontier’s First Gunfighter.”

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The supposed quietude of a good mans allures the ruffian; while on the other hand, arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside...Horrid mischief would ensue were one half the world deprived of the use of them... — Thomas Paine, I Writings of Thomas Paine at 56 (1894).
