U.S. Reps. Debbie Dingell and Fred Upton of Michigan proposed legislation Wednesday that would provide funds to states that adopt laws allowing police to take guns from people who are deemed a danger to themselves or others.
Dingell, D-Dearborn, and Upton, R-St. Joseph, crafted the bill to encourage statutes based on a state law enacted in Indiana after the death of a police officer in 2004 that gives law enforcement officials greater leeway to seize and retain firearms from potentially dangerous gun owners.
The legislation would push for laws that allow state and local police and sheriff’s departments to seize firearms without a warrant if they find probable cause that an individual is dangerous. |

This is a case that deserves close scrutiny from gun-rights advocates and has already garnered supportive comments from the NRA and the Second Amendment Foundation. But a lot of the media coverage has been incredibly slanted, sometimes to the point of not even explaining the other side of the story, and confusing on a factual level to boot. So here is an attempt to clarify the basic details, give the full picture, and relay some new comments from Detroit police and prosecutors — including a blanket denial that the police have a “race to the station” policy in which the person who files a report first is simply assumed to be the victim in the incident, as some have claimed. |

Proudly hoisting American flags and posters into the air, two dozen Moorpark High School students gathered at the center of campus May 2 to voice their support for the Second Amendment.
The 16-minute, on-campus rally came more than a month after thousands of students across the country participated in March for Our Lives demonstrations to protest gun violence and demand stricter gun laws.
Last week’s Moorpark High flag-holders had a different message to share.
“The Second Amendment protects the other 25,” sophomore Katie Matthews, 15, said. “If you take away guns, you take away people’s ability to protect themselves. You’re taking away guns from good people.” |

The early 80s were a dangerous time for women. Actually, every time is probably equally dangerous for women, but in the early 80s, the media decided to make a Thing about it. But the other part of the story was that women who were imperiled decided to take matters into their own hands. Dolly Parton was the first famous woman who admitted to owning a gun. "One good indication of how times are changing occurred last year," Marcia Froelke Coburn wrote in 1981, "when Nancy Reagan admitted to owning 'just a tiny little gun. . . . I don't know anything about it.'" In a survey, 65 percent of readers of Glamour magazine reported owning guns. According to the New York Times, the most popular model among women was the .38 revolver. |

In theory, after the Supreme Court's Heller decision in 2008, the Second Amendment was supposed to mean something—it was supposed to protect a core fundamental right as important as the freedom to speak or to worship. Just as the First Amendment was the uniform law of the land across the nation, the theory went, the Second Amendment would be as well.
But, alas, that was not political reality. California judges, especially in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, have creatively interpreted the Heller decision into a constitutional near-nullity. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has upheld those decisions. And the U.S. Supreme Court, has abdicated its responsibility by letting lower courts get away with it. |

Rock Island isn’t the first company to build a 1911 downsized to fit the .380 ACP cartridge. I remember being a kid in the 1980s swooning over Colt’s glossy catalog and its then brand-new Mustang. However, a design that was considered little better than a toy 30 years ago is now accepted as a serious self-defense option due to improvements in ammunition. |

The firearms industry enjoyed record sales and growth during the Obama administration. Given the perceived threat the anti-gun Democrats posed to gun ownership, the firearms industry played on our paranoia to boost sales.
The AR-15 – thought at the time to be the firearm most apt to be banned – was boosted to “must have” status by the sporting press until it became the most popular “modern sporting firearm” on the planet. |

It’s been said before and bears repeating: Those intent on committing crimes never can tell when their victims are armed.
That truth rang out with lethal consequences Monday morning as a suspected armed robber approached a parked car in Gainesville, Florida, WCJB-TV reported.
In fact, Arkeem Bennett cocked the gun and pointed it at those inside the vehicle, Gainesville Detective Matt Goeckel said during a media briefing.
Well, it didn’t take long for a victim inside the car — who had just been at a movie with a family member, Goeckel said — to pull out his own gun from the glove compartment, the Gainesville Sun reported. |

Our right to keep and bear arms does not trump our kids’ rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness when they simply want to be safe at school.
If gun rightists demanded guards be hired for schools or volunteered to act as guards, the problem would be solved.
Instead, kids watch helplessly as the slaughter continues — and adults fail to protect them. We who cherish our right to own arms have only ourselves to blame for this inevitable backlash. |

As a response, vendors are gradually backing away from the Pennsylvania-based retailer. Yesterday, the parent company of Mossberg guns, O.F. Mossberg & Sons Inc., announced in a press release that it would no longer do business with Dick’s. It was not diplomatic about the reason for this decision either.
“It has come to our attention that Dick’s Sporting Goods recently hired lobbyists on Capitol Hill to promote additional gun control,” CEO Iver Mossberg wrote. “Make no mistake, Mossberg is a staunch supporter of the U.S. Constitution and our Second Amendment rights, and we fully disagree with Dick’s Sporting Goods’ recent anti-Second Amendment actions.” |

Two Second Amendment advocacy groups have told Cincinnati they could sue over the bump stock ban passed by City Council Wednesday.
Ohioans for Concealed Carry (OFCC) and the Buckeye Firearms Association have both sent letters to the city suggesting it could face expensive litigation.
On Wednesday, City Council passed an ordinance making it a misdemeanor to use, own or possess "trigger activators" defined as devices that accelerate the rate of fire of guns. Bump stocks are named specifically. |

A man who testified he was being choked and punched when he grabbed his knife and “started flailing” to stab another man four times was found not guilty of attempted murder.
A 2nd Circuit Court jury returned the verdict Wednesday afternoon, acquitting Tisse Henriksen of the charge of attempted second-degree murder.
“Tisse is very happy to finally be free,” said his attorney, Cary Virtue. “He acted in self-defense when he was ambushed by two men that beat up on him.
“I thought this was overcharged from the get-go, and I’m glad the jury agreed that this wasn’t proven.” |

The speeches were predictable, and as glad as I am to hear prominent figures in the federal executive and legislative branches express their support for gun rights, I’m left wondering what Republicans have done—not said, but done—for gun rights lately.
It’s time to face reality. The Republican Party will not be in control of the House of Representatives in 2019. They might not even control the Senate. These statements may draw vehement objections from my readers, but the history of mid-term elections and Trump’s approval rating puts this prediction on solid ground. |

Late last night, the Colorado General Assembly adjourned from its 2018 Legislative Session. Thankfully, this session passed by with no gun control measures having been passed. Earlier this week, the “red flag” bill, House Bill 1436, died in the Senate State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee.

Under the measure, retail sales would be banned near schools, day care sites, college campuses, medical facilities, bars, parks, places of worship and similar sites. Township Councilman Steven Cahn, an attorney and former U.S. Marine captain, proposed the ordinance Tuesday, which is considered to be the first of its kind in the state, according to a statement from the township. |
