Shelby Meier said Miller, a family friend, became aggressive during a dispute in another apartment. Meier said she and her husband, Dalton Meier, went upstairs to find Miller enraged and threatening Shelby Meier's cousin and others with a knife.
"My husband is my hero, and forever will be," Shelby Meier said. "We were great friends with him (Miller). And it's just like he went crazy. His eyes glassed over, and he charged at all of us, trying to kill us."
Shelby Meier said that's when Dalton Meier fired his gun, shooting Miller. The second man was accidentally hit by a bullet and is expected to be OK. |

More than six months after beloved Swain County educator was shot and killed at his motel in Cherokee, District Attorney Ashley Hornsby Welch has announced that the South Carolina resident who pulled the trigger will not face criminal charges. The man fired in self-defense after Wilson brandished a handgun, the investigation found.
According to Welch’s office, the man, 60-year-old Leo Preuss, and his wife cooperated with officers, including the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation agents who arrived to process the crime scene. They agreed to interviews, provided blood samples and fingerprints, and consented to personal searches and to a search of their car. |

While granting the emergency application in an interlocutory appeal of this type would be unusual, there are compelling reasons to do so here, as perhaps explained best in the amicus brief filed by Paul Clement and Erin Murphy on behalf of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). As they note, there were only six states with bans last year when New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n v. Bruen was decided, and now there are ten. "Instead of treating Bruen as an occasion to reconsider existing restrictions on constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens, they have enacted new 'assault weapon' and/or 'large-capacity magazine' bans, with more still on the way." |

The Ohio House of Representatives today (May 10) passed Senate Joint Resolution 2, getting us one step closer to requiring a 60% threshold for changes to the Ohio Constitution.
The House voted 56-32 to put the measure on the Aug. 8 ballot. Only a simple majority vote was needed.
The final vote on the resolution itself was 62-37. A three-fifths majority (60 votes) was needed.
All Democrats voted against the resolution and August ballot, as did five Republicans: Jamie Callender, Jay Edwards, Brett Hillyer, Jeff LaRe, and Thomas Patton. |

...U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen that expanded the right of Americans to bear arms as guaranteed by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution by significantly curtailing a state’s ability to restrict citizens’ right to carry firearms publicly for their self-defense. The Bruen opinion did not explicitly address the workplace; nor does it prevent employers from enforcing their own restrictions on the possession and carrying of firearms in their own workplaces. Because the Bruen opinion recognized a constitutional right to bear arms in public for self-defense, however, it may result in challenges to private restrictions, including workplace bans on guns in the workplace. |

As law enforcement authorities try to determine what motivated the Allen Mall gunman to kill eight shoppers, Asian American and Pacific Islander residents say last weekend’s massacre has stoked distress within their communities.
The gunman held neo-Nazi beliefs and most of the victims were people of color.
Namrata Sharma lives less than a mile away from the outlet mall. Her 7-year-old daughter doesn’t want to go anywhere alone without her mom or dad because she is so scared. Her 10-year-old son came back from school on Monday and said he was open to moving out of the country. |

Although a major U.S. Supreme Court decision last year made it easier to strike down gun safety regulations as unconstitutional, a federal judge agreed on Monday that a law banning the possession of guns that lack serial numbers does not run afoul of the Second Amendment.
Within months of his indictment for possessing a firearm with an "obliterated" serial number in Denver, Jonathan Avila moved for dismissal of the criminal charge, arguing the law violated his constitutional right to bear arms. |

A single justice of the U.S. Supreme Court is now weighing whether to block Illinois' assault weapons ban from being enforced while the case is being heard in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who hears applications from the Seventh Circuit, could decide on her own whether to issue an emergency injunction or she could refer the question to the full court for consideration. |

When New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ responded to the killing of Jordan Neely last week, he all but said Neely’s mental illness was responsible for his own death.
Neely, a 30-year-old unhoused street performer, died on May 1 after being choked out for 15 minutes by a former Marine named Daniel Penny. Video of the attack, posted on Facebook by freelance journalist Juan Alberto Vazquez, showed two other men assisting Penny as he choked Neely, and Neely’s limp body on the ground after Penny released him. Neely was later declared dead at a Manhattan hospital, and the city medical examiner said Neely died as a result of the chokehold, ruling his death a homicide. |

The 2nd Amendment is one of the most important barriers to tyranny. Our Founders knew that he who has the guns, has the power. The fight for those guns, between those who want control and those who want to preserve freedom, has become especially fierce in recent decades. The enemies of freedom have become much craftier and have been able to use the legal system to their advantage in many cases. However, every once in a while, ordinary men do extraordinary things and often don’t realize the impact on future generations they will have. |

New York lawmakers amended the 2022 Concealed Carry Improvement Act while passing the state budget to try and address ongoing legal challenges from gun rights advocates in federal courts.
Pastors are now permitted to carry firearms at their church, Jonathan D. Hitsous, assistant solicitor general for the state, wrote to the U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit.
State lawmakers also amended the concealed carry law to permit “persons responsible for security” to carry guns at places of worship, and to narrow prohibitions on firearms to public areas of Catskill and Adirondack Parks, and not privately held land within the parks. |

With mass shootings in the news, there’s a lot of talk about guns in the national media lately. But what position did North Dakota lawmakers take on the gun debate during the session?
In short, the North Dakota Legislature’s approach to guns has been to make it easier to carry them.
Brandon Sharvat, the owner of Mandan Sporting Goods, is happy with the state’s approach to gun issues.
“We’re pro-gun here in North Dakota, so we’re doing a good job, I think,” said Sharvat. |

We told you last month about how the Washington Post was trying to resurrect the debate over “Stand Your Ground” (SYG) laws even when the example the newspaper focused on wasn’t even a case involving SYG. What those anti-gun “journalists” at the Post didn’t realize was that their resurrection of the “debate” topic has fueled a fire on the other side of the gun-control movement, with two strongly pro-freedom federal lawmakers now planning to introduce a national Stand Your Ground measure in Congress.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Oklahoma, and Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Florida, plan to introduce the measure soon. |

So, In the spirit of the original signers of the Second Amendment, may I suggest that any citizen wishing to own a firearm should be free to acquire one or more muzzle-loading weapons. Those weapons that have semi-automatic/automatic firing capability would be restricted to the military and law enforcement agencies. Adoption of such a suggestion should satisfy the desire of those who wish to own a weapon while complying with the Second Amendment. |

House Bill 282 repeals arbitrary “gun-free zones” that do nothing to hinder criminals, while leaving law-abiding citizens defenseless. It removes the prohibition on law-abiding citizens carrying firearms for self-defense on public transit property and in vehicles. This ensures that citizens with varying commutes throughout their day, and of various economic means, are able to exercise their Second Amendment rights and defend themselves. |

AR-15 rifles have risen significantly in popularity in recent years, and are commonly used in mass shootings.
These military-style guns can inflict serious harm in mere seconds, and the marketing and gun culture around these weapons has evolved in recent years, according to guests on Greater Boston.
Washington Post national security reporter Alex Horton said gunmakers have had success in selling not just the gun itself, but the image around it. He said a person can get an entry level model for just a few hundred dollars.
"You had gun culture that was rooted in being outdoors, hunting, sportsman-type stuff. ... There was a general turn to the next phase of gun culture which was predicated on self defense," Horton said. |

Deaths from firearms in Texas — the vast majority of them suicides or homicides — have continued rising in Texas, reaching levels not seen in almost three decades.
At the same time, Texas relaxed its gun laws in a decadeslong push to expand Second Amendment rights in the state, most recently in 2021 when Gov. Greg Abbott signed what Republicans called a “constitutional carry” bill into law, allowing Texans to carry handguns without a license or training. |
