A teenager was fatally shot while allegedly attempting to rob a Southwest Philadelphia home Friday afternoon, police said.

According to police, the teen was one of two people who broke into the home on the 5900 block of Greenway Avenue.

A 21-year-old inside the residence grabbed a gun and shot at the would-be robbers.

The teen, who police said was 16 or 17 years old, was shot in the chest and rushed to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia but later pronounced dead, police said.

Police reported that the home has been broken into three or four times in the past couple of months.

A 12-year-old student in Opelika was placed in juvenile detention Thursday after authorities said he brought a loaded semiautomatic handgun to school.

Opelika Police Captain Alan Elkins said the fifth-grader smuggled the nine millimeter pistol in his backpack and had threatened at least two students.

The boy -- facing expulsion from West Forest Intermediate School -- was charged with illegal possession of a weapon on a school campus. He was taken to the Lee County Youth Development Center.

According to Elkins, a classmate told school administrators about the weapon.

Investigators are trying to determine who owns the pistol.

Homeowners and renters who shoot intruders would be presumed innocent under a bill the state Assembly passed.

It's already legal to shoot someone who breaks into your house as long as it's done in self-defense.

Carol Owens, R-Oshkosh, sponsored the measure, saying it's not wrong for people to protect themselves.

But opponents say it's likely that burglars who don't mean to harm anybody will pay with their lives.

The Assembly OK'd the change on a voice vote. It now goes to the Senate.

A Seaford gun store owner was issued numerous summonses after an inspection showed hazardous conditions in a shop area used for firing weapons, police said yesterday.

Martin Tretola, 51, of North Bellmore, owner of T and T Gunnery, 3778 Merrick Rd., was issued the summons Wednesday by the Hempstead Building department, the Nassau Fire Marshal's Office and Nassau police.

A store inspection by police indicated there was inadequate protection in the area where "bullet traps" are located for capturing fired bullets, police said.

"A VIOLENT robber caught on camera during a gunpoint robbery of a bookmakers is today starting a five-year jail term."

"Paul Martin Rathbone, aged 26, made no attempt to cover his face as he pointed the gun at terrified cashiers working in Ladbrokes in Chorley New Road, Horwich."

"He managed to escape with £485 and fled by car with false numberplates - but was only caught when the vehicle was broken into 250 miles away." ...
