Gun Control in America

"Have guns become obsolete in American life, possibly an ugly reminder of violence and war? Should we grant our elected representatives the power to remove them from the public at large?"

"That is the question that Americans have faced throughout our country's history, and will continue to face for the foreseeable future. I do not think so, and can prove that it was the intent of our founding fathers to safeguard our right to arm and defend ourselves, our families and our personal property."

"... I concede the existence of well intentioned individuals, who honestly feel that there is no right to bear arms. ... The people who I find troubling are those who seek to achieve their goal of a disarmed public through deception. ..." ...

"There is a startling disconnect between the problems many of our urban areas face and the solutions advocated by gun-control advocates. In Chicago, for example, Police Superintendent Jody Weis says the city has more guns and more gang members than almost any other city in the country. The solution, according to Chicago Mayor Richard Daley? Keep enforcing a decades-old ban on handguns." ...

... "Already referred to as the 'U.S. gun control capital,' Chicago has banned the private ownership of handguns and rifles since 1982 with some of the most stringent gun laws in the country. The city's excessive gun ban is currently under fire in the top Second Amendment case in the country ... presently before the Supreme Court. And now, with nearly 30 years of failure and violence rising to astronomical proportions, local residents are left longing for the pre-gun control days with lower levels of violence."

"Even with such blatant facts plainly staring them in the face, officials are ratcheting up their anti-gun rhetoric and renewing calls for more drastic efforts to strip citizens of the right to bear arms. ..." ...

"On May 18th 2003, Colorado became a 'shall issue' or 'right-to-carry' state. This meant that any Colorado resident who applied for a permit and meet all additional requirements HAD to be issued a concealed weapons permit. As part of this change was the provision that public property could not be banned from concealed carry unless specific security measures were met. No public college in Colorado meets these security requirements, so by state law concealed carry is legal on any public college in Colorado. ..." ...

"The Second Amendment prohibits Congress from passing laws that interfere with a citizen’s right to bear arms. A recent amendment proposed by Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) to the 'Protecting Americans from Violent Crime Act' allows Americans to carry firearms into national parks."

"Two exceptions were carved out in the bill: (1) It did not allow people to carry firearms that were otherwise prohibited, and (2) It did not allow people to carry firearms if they would not have been allowed to carry firearms in their home state."

There are signs that the judge is unimpressed with the state's case, and she has stressed that prosecutors must demonstrate that the arrestees were guilty of an actual conspiracy to kill cops, not just loose talk. "History News Network reports about it (the title is 1877: America’s Year of Living Violently) and the rather pugnacious promotional campaign for it, which argues that Bellesiles' Arming America was wrongly criticized. Arming America was indeed quite rightly condemned, including by our own Jim Lindgren, and Bellesiles rightly lost his Bancroft Prize, and his tenured Emory University position, as a result of the scandal. That the publicity campaign is so inaccurate is unfortunate; but it is certainly possible that the new book itself might prove to be sound, and I look forward to hearing more when the book is actually out. ..." ...

NRA: Allow terrorism watch list suspects to buy firearms

"People who are on the federal government's terrorist watch list can't fly on airplanes. But they can buy guns."

"Why? Because the National Rifle Association says denying them the right to buy guns is a denial of their Second Amendment rights. There are more than 1 million people on such watch lists, the NRA says, and many of them are there by mistake. Just because they are a suspect doesn't make them a terrorist, the NRA says, any more than being on Sen. Joe McCarthy’s 'communist' list in the 1950s made somebody a real communist."

"Clever parallel, but it doesn't hold up ..."

"Being told you can’t buy a gun might be an inconvenience. It isn't a life-ruining experience ..." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Not a "life-ruining experience"?!? If this law passes and I am on the list, then the next time I go to buy a gun from a dealer, I will be denied. Tedious, yes, but it gets worse. Since I actually am a 'prohibited person', I have committed a felony by attempting to purchase a weapon. Alarm bells go off, a little research shows that I have a permit to carry and a whole bunch of guns, so the S.W.A.T. team comes knocking on (down?) my door some fine night. The first thing they'll probably do is shoot my 60 pound Lab/Shepherd mix who will go charging to the door to greet whoever is coming in. And the first thing I do when someone shoots my dog is to shoot back. Now, please explain to me how this is not going to be a "life-ruining experience".

"In 2007, the Bush administration backed a bill by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., to let federal officials block sales of weapons and explosives to people on a terrorist watch list. The NRA charged that it 'would allow arbitrary denial of Second Amendment rights based on mere 'suspicions' of a terrorist threat.'"

"We just couldn't believe the response to the momlogic article we wrote last year, wherein we listed the horrific incidents of children accidentally killed by firearms in the U.S."

"One statistic in our piece was utterly heartbreaking: 'More than 500 children die annually from accidental gunshots.' Now a website, Damnum Absque Injuria, claims that since the U.S. population teeters at over 300 million, '500 is a statistical zero.' What's worse is that the site comes to this conclusion using what they call 'dadlogic.'" ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Well you must have come to your 500 children a year figure through lyinglogic, because to reach that figure for 1999 - 2006 you must include "children" up to age forty-three! Using the more generally accepted figure of age 13 for a cutoff, the accidental death rate is almost one-tenth of the claimed five hundred. 57 accidental deaths a year is awful, but more than 6,300 children accidentally drown each year, so where would our energies be better directed?

FULL TEXT BELOW:

We were forwarded a video (above) of S.C. Fourth Congressional District candidate Christina Jeffrey discussing the Second Amendment and God bless her bat sh*t crazy, Rudy Giuliani-lovin' ass but on this issue she's dead right …

The Second Amendment wasn't put in the Bill of Rights to protect our ability to hunt, it was put there to protect our right to "take the power back," yo. That may not be politically-correct to say, but it's accurate.

Now … is Jeffrey still a loon? Absofrigginlutely … although we're not going to call her one while she's brandishing an AK-47. Well, at least not until after we've "Manchurian Candidated" her …

"As the race for sheriff enters the final stretch, the real difference between incumbent Sandra Hutchens and her two opponents depends on whether one believes the Orange County Sheriff's Department is on the road to healing or Armageddon." ...

"However, one federal issue that falls smack in Hutchen's lap is the Second Amendment right to bear arms and her control over concealed weapons permits."

"Hutchens interpretation of gun permit laws is narrower than that of Hunt and Hunter – each of whom has said they would hand out more permits than the current administration." ...

"And that's exactly why Hutchens insists she is more qualified to be sheriff: She says she is willing to take hard, unpopular positions." ...

The Schuyler County Legislature is voicing concern over proposed state legislation to crack down on firearms.

Legislators passed a resolution Monday, opposing at least a dozen anti-firearms bills making their way through the State Legislature.

County Chairman Tim O’Hearn says the fear is that the proposed legislation would infringe on civil liberties and the Right to Bear Arms.

The Inter-County Association of Western New York is expected to pass a similar resolution at its meeting Friday.

The association represents 19 counties and about three million people.

"Mark Twain is credited with having said: 'Civilization is the limitless multiplication of unnecessary necessities.' Surely AB 1810, AB 1934 and AB 2223 fall into that category. These legislative proposals do nothing to keep us safer. Rather, they are calculations to hinder and badger honest gun owners, hunters and businessmen."

"The cost in dollars and time, for the state and private sectors, in the present economic environment, is foolhardy and unjustifiable. AB 1810 expands additional registration requirements, in direct violation of Second Amendment rights. California politicians want to place another layer of costly bureaucracy on already documented firearms. ..." ...

"The major media outlets in Oklahoma are doing their best to fight the war against conservatism in the state, and open carry is the new battle front. The weapons the press is using in this skirmish are two of the most powerful icons in the state: Gene Stipe, a former legislator for 51 years, and the Oklahoma State Troopers Association."

"Gene Stipe was loved by many in southeastern Oklahoma during his service, and his power of persuasion may still have an affect on them. He has one problem, however; a U.S. District Court has found him mentally incompetent, and he is the biggest political crook in Oklahoma history. Stipe's thoughts on the open carry law?" ...

INVESTIGATORS believe a young Moscow cop died after scratching his nose with his loaded gun.

The Moskovsky Komsomolets reports the 23-year-old policeman, who was not named, was found under a desk with a head wound. The investigation ruled out a murder and there was no note that would indicate suicide, the paper said.

The alarm was raised when a supervisor couldn't reach the policeman by phone. A locked door was broken down and the man's body was located, the paper said.

Pravda said the victim had been serving in the police force since 2007. He was single and had not visited the staff psychologist. He was reported to be in good spirits on the day of the accident.
