"A last-ditch lobbying effort by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy prevented an anti-gang measure that passed the House of Representatives yesterday from including language that would have allowed grade-schoolers to pack a pistol as long as they were in the company of a parent."

"'Today was a very good day because we got rid of something bad in the bill,' said McCarthy (D-Mineola), the leading gun-control advocate in Congress. 'Personally, I don't know why a 9-year-old should ever have a gun.'"

"In a move that has shocked many on Capitol Hill, the Illinois State Police (ISP) have come out in opposition to a bill designed to close the 'gun show loophole.'"

"In a tersely worded May 11, 2005 letter, ISP Director Larry Trent implored state legislators to vote 'no' on Senate Bill 57. In that letter, Trent made unfounded claims that the bill would endanger the lives of police officers."

"Sponsored in the Illinois House by Rep. John Millner, SB57 would put in place safeguards to prevent terrorists, drug lords and gang bangers from acquiring weapons at gun shows. The bill would greatly strengthen the state's background check law -- thus protecting the public and police officers alike from gun violence. The bill would also bring the state's gun purchase record keeping system into line with federal regulations."

"In an interview on CNN's 'Larry King Live,' Rice said she came to that view from personal experience. She said her father, a black minister, and his friends armed themselves to defended the black community in Birmingham, Ala., against the White Knight Riders in 1962 and 1963. She said if local authorities had had lists of registered weapons, she did not think her father and other blacks would have been able to defend themselves."

"Working to circumvent a four-month-old Supreme Court ruling, House Republicans overwhelmingly passed a bill yesterday establishing a host of gang-related crimes as federal offenses and dictating minimum sentences from 10 years to life in prison."

"The legislation was introduced by Virginia lawmakers after a Supreme Court ruling in January allowed judges to deviate from the harsh penalties specified in federal sentencing guidelines. The bill, approved 279 to 144, supersedes the guidelines with a schedule of penalties for gang crimes ranging from 10 to 30 years, with a sentence of life in prison or capital punishment for a gang crime that results in a death."

"Secretary Rice said that if local authorities had had lists of registered weapons, she did not think her father and other Blacks would have been able to defend themselves."

"This implies properly, of course, that had they known where the guns were, those guns wouldn’t have remained there in private hands for much longer. The fear of a defenseless populace – make that a disarmed populace – where only the government and the criminals have the guns is not unfounded, and it is generations old, as Secretary Rice’s remarks indicate. This reasonable apprehension persists in 2005."

"A firearms expert said that the major advantage of the weapon --- its ease of firing -- can also be considered a danger."

-------
Yes, let's blame the Glock, and not the "stellar professional" who couldn't keep control of it.

"Hellgate Elementary threw the book at the Missoula-area youngster who carried to school the BB gun he found on his way to class one morning and at the schoolmate who helped him hide it in her locker. The Missoulian this month has reported extensively on the 12-month expulsions the two students received from a school district that portrays itself as bound by a strict federal law that sets a zero-tolerance policy regarding weapons in schools."

"In fact, however, the school has plenty of latitude in disciplining those students. It's the local school board, not federal bureaucrats, deciding that those two students should spend most of two school years twiddling their thumbs at home."

"I'M A RESPONSIBLE gun owner with a concealed-weapons permit, and I've read your series of gun-violence reports over the last few weeks."

"I feel they were all one-sided and inaccurate. If you wonder why responsible gun owners instantly get their dander up every time new 'gun control' ideas are thrown around, I'll tell you."

"Because every anti-gun proposal is just that - anti-gun. It's all or nothing. There is no reasonable compromise. Every proposal is just a foot in the door to complete elimination."
