Americans Brace for AK-47s Now in Streets

"It is one of the most feared weapons that have largely been inaccessible for decades. That has changed recently, as law enforcement authorities in Palm Beach and Martin counties documented deadly incidents involving the new weapon of choice by gangs. In both counties, AK-47s were used to kill two people and wound four others in three separate incidents." ...

"The weapon is believed to be a badge of honour for organized youth gangs. AK-47s still are less readily available than the more traditional weapons used by gangs, but they appear to be the next phase of evolutionary drug turf battles. ..." ...

"Earlier this week I told you about a warning card that came with my new gun ('My New Gun Works Far Better Than Its Warning Notice'). I explained how the warning was authored by a completely unreliable source from a state led by freedom-haters."

"What I failed to do was to recommend a replacement warning. ..." ...

"It's fine with me if those warning are engraved on the metal itself. I believe that safety takes priority over beauty."

"... After reading 'My New Gun Works Far Better Than Its Warning Notice' a John D. sent me this warning:"

No matter what his size.

When danger threatens call on me

And I will equalize.

"Back from his mini-vacation in Boca Raton, Fla., John Perzel returned to Philadelphia to find a police officer had been shot and killed in a bar outside his district."

"This called for some finger-wagging by the House speaker, though not at the perp who killed Officer Gary Skerski with a shotgun blast to the neck." ...

"Of course, it is nuts that we have so many guns in the city. I wonder who is responsible for that?"

"Could it be House Speaker John Perzel? I think so."

"Could it be State Rep. Dennis O'Brien, another Republican, who is chair of the House Judiciary Committee? I think so." ...

"For more than a year, House Bill 871 has sat in O'Brien's committee gathering dust. This is the bill ... to limit handgun sales in Pennsylvania to one a month." ...

... "All three murder-suicides in the span of a week in Iowa were unusual. ..." ...

"Increase attention to the means. Ninety-two percent of murder-suicide cases involved a firearm. All five cases in Iowa these past few months were carried out with guns. Guns are often easily available in homes. At the least, guns should be unloaded and locked and the ammunition stored separately. More effective for family safety is to remove guns from the home altogether. More owners need to take steps to ensure guns are less accessible, especially to youth."

"The steps outlined above could help prevent the repetition of tragedies like those in Gruver, Armstrong, Oskaloosa, Davenport, Le Mars and in many other communities across Iowa."
-------

Submitter's Note: Actually "safe-storage" laws have been shown to have no effect on crime or suicide.

"There is a new report out by the Australian Institute of Criminology on Firearms Theft. While the discussion is not clearly written in the text, it was my understanding from talking to Jenny Mouzos that out of 664 firearms stolen there were five instances where stolen guns were used in 'crime or violence' (two of those instances involved a suicide) (p. 11 and 59). There was apparently one murder committed with a stolen gun."

I don't recall any laws specifically addressing the ownership of shotguns that was in effect in Philadelphia before 1995 or is currently being proposed if local regulatory control was granted. I hope that Rendell isn't allowed to view a win in the gubernatorial race this fall as a mandate for more gun laws. FULL TEXT BELOW:

Fox News has an interesting program on Alan Korwin's work showing that the gun free school zones make it impossible for people to own guns legally in most cities. The program gave a lot of attention to someone defending the laws and it would have been useful to at least address the question whether these gun free zones actually produced any beneficial effects. I know of no studies that show that gun free zones reduce crime and I have research that indicates the opposite. Letting the defender of the laws simply claiming a benefit without any evidence was unfortunate, though I am glad that Alan was given a chance to point out the impact of these laws.

"It is almost inconceivable that a handful of gun advocates would propose legislation that would allow anyone, anywhere who claims to be acting in self-defense to pull a gun and start blasting away. Common sense dictates that the possibility of injury to innocent bystanders would require standards to be set where deadly force can and should be used."

"But N.H. Senate Bill 318 sought to revise state law to give individuals the same right in public places that they currently have within the confines of their homes - the right to choose to use deadly force rather than retreat. The legislation would have made those gun-toting individuals who are accosted in public immune from prosecution stemming from such a shooting." ...

This prohibited fully automatic weapons, required the registration of all handguns and certain rifles (Colt and Armalite, but not the Ruger). It also installed a system of controls that required firearms retailers (not black marketers) to only sell to those customers that could provide a federally issued Firearms Acquisition Certificate. It also prohibited the shooting of restricted firearms at any location other than a federally approved range. Prohibited weapons were destroyed without compensation to their owners. This was the first instance of the Canadian government seizing property without compensation during peacetime.  QUOTES TO REMEMBER
You are bound to meet misfortune if you are unarmed because, among other reasons, people despise you....There is simply no comparison between a man who is armed and one who is not. It is unreasonable to expect that an armed man should obey one who is unarmed, or that an unarmed man should remain safe and secure when his servants are armed. In the latter case, there will be suspicion on the one hand and contempt on the other, making cooperation impossible. — Niccolo Machiavelli in "The Prince."
