"Stanley Fish, professor of (in?)humanities and law, wrote an op-ed for the New York Times Monday speculating that perhaps the NRA is 'un-American.' Not all NRA members, mind you--not the recreational shooters, or those who believe that the Second Amendment protects the right of self-defense (although Fish describes himself as 'deeply unpersuaded' by that argument). So to whom does he refer? Only the 'militant' members, and most of the leadership. Let's have him explain who the 'militants' are:" ... |

... "The CDC reports that for 2010 (the latest year available), one single six-year old died from a gunshot. For all children younger than 10, there were 36 accidental gun deaths, and that is out of 41 million children. Perhaps most important, about two-thirds of these accidental gun deaths involving young children are not shots fired by other little kids but rather by adult males with criminal backgrounds. In other words, unless you send your child to play at a criminal’s home, she is exceedingly unlikely to get shot." ... |

"Today’s Seattle Times reports that the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) wants to ratchet down on the legal limit for blood alcohol to reduce the number of fatal traffic accidents involving drunk drivers, leading some gun rights advocates to wonder why gun crime is treated differently."
"People who violate the drunk driving law are punished individually, but when someone commits a crime with a firearm, gun prohibitionists want to ban firearms. "Last week, the State Department’s arms export office demanded that Defense Distributed remove CAD files for the Liberator from its website. Defense Distributed complied with the takedown letter right away, despite strong language on its website promising it would be 'a home for fugitive information' and 'No object file will be censored unless it is malicious software.' Predictably, it didn’t take long for the CAD files to make their way to BitTorrent, where they’ll be available forever." ... |

Just after the plans for the weapon were seized by the feds, the usual rationalizing of government overreach was spewed by the State Department. Cody Wilson, who owns the company that manufactured the weapon, says he was asked by the U.S. Department of Trade Defense Controls to pull the files – pending their determination of whether they actually have the power to control the information. "A West Easton resident who fits the description of a Republican candidate for Northampton County Council has sued county Sheriff Randall P. Miller for revoking the resident's license to carry a firearm."
"The 'True Appellant' is not named in the suit, but the circumstances match those of Tricia Mezzacappa, who bloggers say listed two of her political opponents as character references on her firearms license application."
"The suit filed Monday says the appellant was issued a license June 11, 2012, but Miller revoked the license March 27 with a note saying, 'We have received information that you falsified your application.'"
"Miller failed to provide 'any meaningful explanation' of the revocation, the suit says." ... |

"... In my nearly 70 years I have not heard of a more senseless act of murder that would exceed the butchery of young children that occurred in Newtown. Like Ms. Wanchek, I continue to be repulsed by descriptions of the gruesome murders of those children and their brave teachers."
"However, my takeaway was the polar opposite. Wanchek became a gun-control activist and joined Moms Demand Action, whereas I joined the NRA. I was dumbfounded that gun control advocates would use dead 6- and 7-year old children to advance a political agenda. ..." ... |

"As a law enforcement officer I find that most laws have a purpose and a place. But whatever my opinion of a law may be, I have a duty to uphold those laws without question. That means laws on the books are enforced and carry corresponding charges and penalties. But a lot of people aren’t aware of the latest the flavor of the month charge that’s being used to bring gun control to more and more people: Weapons Under Disability . . ." ... |

"Regular readers will recall TTAG’s previous post about the Pittsburgh Po-Po’s 'investigation' into whether their .40 caliber pistols had enough 'stopping power' for local law enforcement officers intent on saving their asses protecting and serving the city’s taxpayers. Back in April, the City of Bridges’ police department responded to two incidents where bad guys refused to fall down dead after being shot by embarking on some comparison testing—to see if they needed to switch to .45 caliber firearms. Yesterday, they tested a 'new gun.' And the survey says . . ." ... |

"I am getting tired of being classed as a second-class citizen. It seems to me that it is fashionable to speak out today against the citizenry who own guns legitimately. Never mind the moral and mental decay that is responsible for criminal use of guns."
"I am an 85-year-old Korean War veteran who was trusted with guns by our government to help our nation in a time of need. I’m now retired from a lifelong dedication to the work ethic. I served my local government as an elected official after retirement. I have been teaching gun responsibility for 50 years." ... |

"Hundreds of guns are being swapped for gift cards in Phoenix, where two anonymous donors have given $100,000 apiece to help fund what some say may be the city’s last series of gun buybacks."
"It’s the third buyback the city has held in May, racing to take unwanted guns off the hands of residents before a new state law goes into effect that would require police to resell any lost, forfeited or abandoned firearms they receive." ... |

"Our Amended Complaint claims that the SAFE Act is unconstitutional in that it violates the Second Amendment, the Equal Protection Clause, and is unconstitutionally vague."

... "There are not all that many 3-D printers in circulation yet, but they are the Next Big Thing, and in five or 10 years they may be as common as mobile phones. It would appear a great many people are looking forward to that happy day, because in the first week after Wilson uploaded the blueprints for his gun, 100,000 people downloaded them."
"Wilson is one of those political innocents on the libertarian Right who truly believe that governments would behave better if everybody had a gun. He even calls his plastic pistol the 'Liberator'." ... -------

"When the FBI released its figures for the most dangerous cities in America for 2012, Oakland came in fourth place."
"Now, some Oakland residents are hoping a bill currently winding its way through the California legislature may help turn that tide by allowing the city, where 11 crimes are committed with firearms every day, to create its own slate of gun control regulations tougher than those governing California as a whole." ... -------
Submitter's Note: But isn't CA the Brady Campaign's highest ranking gun-grabber state? Are they admitting that all these laws don't work?!? |
