The Second Amendment, which was passed by Congress on September 25, 1789, states, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The private right to own a firearm — for protection, for hunting, or for enjoyment — has remained central to the national ethos of the United States. Americans living in most states today would not have much trouble buying a gun. |

John Volpe, 12, of Little Rock, wants to be president. Or an attorney. Or maybe play in the NBA. He's an accomplished angler and duck hunter, and he's a crack dove shooter. As of May 6, he's also a turkey hunter who earned his wings in northeast Kansas after years of seemingly insurmountable bad luck. Volpe has hunted wild turkeys with his father, Joe, for four seasons. The elder Volpe, who serves as the U.S. Magistrate for the eastern district of Arkansas, said he and his son are enthusiastic but star-crossed turkey hunters. Joe Volpe has killed one immature gobbler, but they have had enough close calls, missed shots and blown enough chances to write a small book. |

The Rev. Rob Schenck believes all life is sacred. He built his ministry and his reputation around anti-abortion activism, preaching from picket lines in front of abortion clinics. Over the past few years, his opinion on abortion hasn't changed, but his sense of calling has shifted. He refocused his ministry on gun violence after a 2013 fatal shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, which is near his home. |

Testifying before Congress in 1934 about a bill to virtually ban machine guns and sawed-off shotguns, National Rifle Association President Karl Frederick was asked about carrying firearms for self-defense. “I do not believe in the general promiscuous toting of guns,” said the former Olympic gold medal sharpshooter. “I think it should be sharply restricted and only under licenses.” |

One thing Gov. Nathan Deal has shown this year is that he’s not afraid to take stands that could be politically unpopular through the use of his veto pen. On the final day before bills passed by the 2016 Legislature would become state law without action by the governor, he scuttled Campus Carry legislation that would have allowed licensed gun carriers to take weapons onto the campuses of Georgia’s public colleges and universities, with athletic events and places like dormitories and fraternity/sorority houses still off-limits. |

An 1886 Winchester rifle that once belonged to a man who helped capture Apache leader Geronimo has sold for $1.2 million at an auction. The Rock Island Auction Co., of Illinois, says it became the most expensive single firearm ever sold at auction when it was presented for sale in late April. It went to an undisclosed buyer. George Albee was working for Winchester and was able to secure serial No. 1 of their newest rifle design in 1886. He presented the rifle as a gift to a Civil War buddy, U.S. Army Capt. Henry Ware Lawton, who had just led the operation that captured Geronimo. |

Bay City Mayor Kathleen Newsham says she's not telling people whether they should own a gun, but she does want gun owners to be extra careful.
At a 7:30 p.m. Bay City Commission meeting Monday, May 16, Newsham is issuing a proclamation that recognizes June 2, 2016, as National Gun Violence Awareness Day...
The proclamation says, "Whereas, with few gun regulations in place and only one state mandating that guns are stored in a locked place, we can do better." It goes on that "most gun deaths involving children could be prevented by teaching people the correct way to store guns in the home," and includes statistics, "on an average day, 88 Americans are killed by guns, and on an average day, seven children and teens are killed by guns." |

Proponents of expanding background checks for gun purchases on Saturday formally kicked off a campaign that has been under the radar so far, but will be heavily watched by national observers through November. It’ll be one of two key national races this year on the same subject, pitting a group co-founded by billionaire former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg as a response to mass shootings in 2014 against the group it was meant to target — the National Rifle Association. |

Outside the American Medical Response building on East Ashland Street in Brockton rests a 10-foot statue made of five metal blocks that spell out “THINK.” Upon closer look, behind the red, green and blue painted letters – made to look like children’s wooden alphabet blocks – are dozens of guns melted inside. Rifles, handguns, revolvers, bullet chambers, triggers and barrels of more than 250 guns were broken into pieces and decommissioned over 20 years ago as the result of a gun buyback program that was hosted by the city in 1994. |

Is that the sound of liberty ringing out all over the place? Or maybe it’s the sound of lunacy — gunshots on street corners, in cars, in homes. Each time a trigger is pulled represents a unique story. But if you take a moment once in a while to look at the constant repetition, the story is about more than individual incidents. It’s about myriad expressions of a collective willingness to tolerate needless bloodletting. |

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon isn’t saying yet whether he’ll veto a sweeping expansion of gun rights passed by lawmakers. Nixon said Friday (5/13) that he will give the measure a comprehensive review. Nixon’s comments came after lawmakers passed the bill on the last day of the 2016 session. The measure would allow most people to carry concealed guns without a permit and create a “stand your ground” right for people to defend themselves with no duty to retreat. |

We’ve spent a lot of ink—digital and otherwise—on the SIG P320. The rationale is uncomplicated: It’s a really fine pistol, and we don’t much mind who hears us say so. It’s also surprising in a minor respect: While we have always admired the quality, accuracy and durability of SIG arms, we struggled to run the pistols with the confidence we did many others. We had no illusions that the failings were other than our own. That happily came to an end with the P320. |
