The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a study this week which showed a higher firearm homicide rate in 2020 relative to 2019, and pointed to poverty as a factor in the increase.

The CDC study showed that “the firearm homicide rate in 2020 was the highest recorded since 1994.” But it also showed that the increase in the firearm homicide rates varied across demographics.

Everyone should own a belly band. You might not use it every day, but it needs to be an option in your holster collection when wearing a conventional clip-held holster isn’t an option. For example, regular holsters don’t work well with gym shorts or yoga pants. But if you exercise outside or want to wear athletic wear for a casual day, a belly band is a terrific way to keep your firearm handy.

With grocery prices putting a major squeeze on budgets, some are going old school self sourcing their own food with a fishing rod or a hunting rifle. And the benefits add up to more than dollars and cents. Mason Franklin grew up hunting and fishing with his dad and granddad. "Fishing is more recreation but hunting, that's all we eat is venison," explains Franklin.

A modern and attractive reboot of a classic complete with new features for a 21st Century market, Springfield Armory's SA-35 has a lot going for it. Introduced late last year, the SA-35 isn't a page out of the old FN/Browning catalog, although it generationally has a lot in common with the latter's 1960s "T-series" Hi-Powers. This includes an external extractor (a little foreshadowing is due here), ring hammer, and "smooth" slide, lacking the earlier thumbprint take-down scallop seen in guns prior to that time. I personally think the T-series was the summit of BHP evolution, so that's a wise choice on Springer's part.

Lawmakers from Illinois last week introduced bicameral legislation on Capitol Hill that would make unlicensed gun possession illegal. The move, billed as a way to stomp out gun crime, doesn't target gun criminals. Instead, the Blair Holt Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act would outlaw unlicensed firearm ownership and the transfer of firearms without such a government-issued permit, then direct the U.S. Attorney General to create a federal registry for sales tied to fingerprint-based nationwide criminal background checks.

It is a compact carry, but I am duty carrying it right now.”

CZ’s full-size P-10 made quite a splash on its initial release in 2016, and this flagship polymer-framed pistol has grown into an impressive line of models covering almost every target shooting or self-defense application. The most recent addition fills one more niche as the ultra concealable, deep-cover P-10 M chambered for 9 mm Luger.

In 2004, the Hornady Manufacturing Company introduced the .17 Hornady Mach 2 (.17 HM2) using a .22 LR case that had been extended and necked down. This cartridge should not be mistaken for the Hornady .17 HMR, which is based on the case of a .22 Magnum. The .17 HM2 is designed to take varmint at 100 yards or more, and performs the task admirably. It develops a similar amount of energy as the .22 LR in foot pounds, but it travels at a higher velocity – resulting in a flatter bullet trajectory.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
To trust arms in the hands of the people at large has, in Europe, been believed...to be an experiment fraught only with danger. Here by a long trial it has been proved to be perfectly harmless...If the government be equitable; if it be reasonable in its exactions; if proper attention be paid to the education of children in knowledge and religion, few men will be disposed to use arms, unless for their amusement, and for the defence of themselves and their country. — Timothy Dwight, Travels in New England and New York [London 1823]
