"...I can’t help but notice the worried looks and whispers of waiting passengers while helping a ticket agent check in my rifle or muzzleloader at the airport. In one case, my daughters overheard a woman tell her husband, 'You’d think with children in his house he wouldn’t keep guns around.' "
"Amazing. I would have thought she would have been more impressed that my three daughters — then fairly young — had stood in line for 30 minutes without irritating the spit out of everyone within hearing. At some point you would hope those judgmental sorts would look at your family group, consider the evidence before them, and realize gun ownership isn’t an indicator of criminal intent or aberrant behavior." |

"An effective gun control program can readily accommodate the legitimate needs of hunting, marksmanship, collection and self-defense. That's not the problem. The problem has to do with the Second Amendment, which was placed in the constitution for two reasons. First, an effective citizens militia was regarded as essential to national defense. Second, it was thought to be more difficult for an unjust government to tyrannize over an armed citizenry than an unarmed one." ...
"As regards the second reason, things are not so simple. We live peaceably under a benign government, and the threat of tyranny is perhaps the last thing the average citizen has on his mind. It can't happen here. Or can it? ..." |

Israel Police, in conjunction with the Interior Ministry, kicked off a firearms-return campaign Sunday. According to the plan, weapons held by the public without proper permits must be returned by the end of the year.
In the first stage of the campaign, letters will be sent to some 32,000 citizens who hold firearms without a valid permit.
At the end of the operation in October, criminal investigations will be launched into the citizens who did not respond to the mailed-in warning.
------- It's difficult to believe that a country that supposedly realizes the value of an armed citizenry in crime prevention still uses fascist permitting and licensing schemes. |

Think about this: You wake up one morning to find that someone you have dated has gone to court to obtain a "protective order" against you. In this "secret" proceeding -- in which you have no right to be present or heard -- the court, after hearing one side of the story, has ordered (as required by law) that all of your firearms be confiscated. You have 24 hours to turn in all your guns, and no immediate right to appeal.
Furthermore, it is a crime for you to transfer your guns to a neighbor for safekeeping, AND you are required to reimburse the state for taking your guns away!
If you retain any portion of a gun, it is a crime. And any violation of the order is a crime for which you can be imprisoned without trial.
------- "In the name of 'political correctness,' this bill would allow ex parte ('star chamber') protective orders to be entered against a defendant by anyone in a 'dating relationship' (sections 6108 (a) (7) (i) (A) and 6102)."
"Defendants would be required to turn in their firearms within 24 hours (section 6108 (a) (7) (i) (A)) -- without any immediate right to appeal -- and to pay for the privilege of having their guns seized."
"A defendant would not have to violate the court's order to be sent away to prison for six months. If he just 'engag[ed] in a pattern of practice that [the court finds] indicates continued risk of harm,' he could be imprisoned for up to six months. And the defendant is explicitly prohibited from receiving a jury trial before being sent to jail (section 6113.1 (b) (3))."

"Three policemen were shot dead and another wounded during an armed robbery in Troyeville near Jeppestown on Sunday, Johannesburg police reported."
"Sergeant Sanku Tsunke said a 15-member gang entered a business on the corner of Bezuidenhout and Gous Streets, and demanded money while holding the owner at gun point."
"The businessman was then shot in the stomach. The gang started shooting randomly and four policemen, who were inside the Chinese-owned warehouse, were shot."
------- And yet, the South African government continues its attempts to emulate the British gun control failures, even as armed criminals are killing the very people who are supposed to protect the disarmed populace. |

The fate of a bill that lifts limits on gun purchases is in the hands of Governor Mark Sanford.
Current law limits people to buying no more than one gun a month. Doing away with the nearly 30-year-old law could make the state the first in the nation to lift the cap.
The legislation is intended to help gun collectors. It prompted little debate as it passed the House last year or the Senate last week. It is now on the governor's desk. Sanford spokesman Will Folks would not say whether the governor would sign the act. Opponents say it could lead to more South Carolina-purchased guns being used in crimes in other states. A federal study shows the law has had little impact on that. |
