New York Gov. Kathy Hochul used the weekend mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket to demand “stronger” gun control laws in a state that already has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, and President Joe Biden will fly the city on Tuesday, likely to make the same plea.
According to WIVB News, Hochul told reporters during a Sunday press conference, “I continue to call on Washington to do just some basic things that we’ve done here in New York. I also call on the Supreme Court, which is actually considering rolling back some of the protections that were put in place here to protect New York citizens from gun violence.”

Hochul had scheduled the gun control announcement before the Buffalo shooting. The governor, speaking at a briefing over the weekend in Buffalo, said Saturday’s incident makes it more important than ever to close loopholes in New York’s laws.

In late April, Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), made a bizarre announcement during a congressional hearing that DHS was forming what it called a “Mis- and Disinformation Governance Board.” The statement came in response to a question about how DHS was responding to supposed Russian interference in American elections. Mayorkas said the Board was intended to counter threats to both election security and “homeland security.” |

Taking short trips on local trails around my house while still recovering from a foot injury led me to an encampment of tarps and trash littered across the woods. In this moment, I wondered what others would think when finding homeless camps while backpacking and what they would do. I believe with some brief assessments and action, one can remain safe as well as help those possibly in need. |

One of my first loves was an old Savage 10FP in .308 Win. It had all the simplicity a guy could want, and it just plain shot. I have had a bunch of Savages over the years, and I have typically had a pretty good experience with them. So, when the opportunity to shoot a newer version of the Model 10/110 came around, I was eager to see how it compared to the old FP I loved so much. |

John Browning’s classic 1911 design remains a force in action pistol competition, but it received a significant makeover when STI took the basic design and turned it into a high-capacity wide-body pistol. Those guns proved to be extremely popular, and although STI is now known as Staccato, the trend continues. At the 2021 USPSA Nationals, multiple models of STI and Staccato guns were the most used by Open Class shooters with 29 percent choosing them, as well as Limited and L10 with 18 percent selecting them.

Just before the turn of the 19th century, the 6.5x57mm Mauser was introduced to be fired from rifles built with the M88 action. Despite this, no military ever adopted the cartridge, yet European and American civilian hunters have used the 6.5x57mm with great effect on medium-sized game. |

When it comes to picking a handgun cartridge for your carry gun or for home defense, you can’t go wrong with the 40 Smith & Wesson (S&W) or the 45 ACP.
Both cartridges have faithfully served shooters for decades. The 45 ACP cut its teeth in the trenches of WWI and served the U.S. Military faithfully all the way through Vietnam. On the other hand, the 40 S&W was baptized by fire in the concrete jungle by law enforcement officers (LEO), the FBI, and CCW permit holders starting in the 90’s all the way up to the present day. |
