"More than 115 dead or injured, and now a lame 'apology' from Newsweek; maybe it is time for the press to accept waiting periods before exercising its First Amendment rights in the same way the press has backed waiting periods on law-abiding Americans before exercising their Second Amendment rights."

"That’s the observation from the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) now that Newsweek has acknowledged its report about the desecration of the Koran by soldiers at Guantanamo Bay was bogus."

"'I wonder if Newsweek, or its owner, the Washington Post, would submit all of their stories for FBI clearance before they publish,' said SAF founder Alan Gottlieb. 'This irresponsible exercise of the First Amendment freedom of the press has killed and injured more people than Charles Whitman or the Beltway Snipers.'" ...

Police say a 77-year-old Caldwell man managed to clobber a young intruder and hold him until help arrived.

Warren Harlow says he was just defending his home when he scuffled with the teenager Sunday night.

Harlow says he was in bed when he heard someone breaking in.

He grabbed a gun and thumped the intruder twice on the head with the pistol.

He continued to struggle with the man while Harlow's wife, Jan Harlow, called police.

Officers say they arrived to find Harlow standing over the nineteen-year-old intruder.

Caldwell Police Chief Bob Sobba says he'd rather citizens not take matters into their own hands.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A southeast Missouri landowner won't face charges after shooting and killing a 400-pound black bear, saying he was afraid the animal was going to attack his dog.

The male bear was found dead yesterday near Marquand, in Madison County. It had been shot three times with a .22-caliber rifle on Sunday.

It is illegal to kill black bears in Missouri, but conservation officials say the man who shot the bear was protecting his property.

The bear first showed up at the man's house Saturday night. The man ran the bear off after it ripped boards off a shed as it tried to get to animal feed.

The animal returned a day later and appeared to threaten the man's dog.

The black bear is the smallest bear in North America and the only one native to Missouri.

FULL TEXT BELOW

After a man with a permit to carry a concealed weapon shot the bouncer at Nye's last week, Sen. Pat Pariseau defended her misguided conceal-and-carry legislation by saying, "I don't think it proves problems with the law. I think it proves that someone got [a permit] who shouldn't have gotten one."

Pariseau is absolutely right -- a man who shouldn't have gotten a permit got one. But this isn't something to be flippant about; it shows that proponents of the legislation are wrong.

Anyone can carry a weapon illegally. We don't have to make it easier. Would there have been a shooting at Nye's if this man hadn't had a permit that allowed him to stash his gun in his car?

Maybe, maybe not. Isn't it tragic that we have to ask that question?

SH, Minneapolis.
-------

Submitter's Note: The only problem with Ms. H's "logic" is that the shooter was not carrying a gun. Based on the news reports it appears that he drove home to pick up his gun, making his permit completely irrelevant.

"Several weeks ago, Ohioans For Concealed Carry began receiving reports of new 'no-guns' signs appearing at Best Buy locations in Ohio. Initially, it appeared this may have been a result of store managers having been mislead by out-of-state companies who are peddling 'compliance kits' that contain 'no-guns' signs, and falsely claiming that state law requires them to be posted. In fact, in at least one Best Buy store, the sign that is posted was obtained from one of these companies, G-Neil."
