In pre-dawn fog and under snow-heavy conifers, I’d dogged the track to a thoroughfare muddied by prints. It led uphill, fraying through soggy thickets. Pockets of light ahead became an island of second-growth, freed of the forest’s darkness and drip. I glassed it quickly from the gloom and spied a tan rump, then others. Sifting through the head-high tangle, the elk would soon vanish. Frantically I sought antlers.

What does Ted Nugent have in common with FBI agents? What about Sonny Crockett from Miami Vice and the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) police department? If you guessed a 10mm Auto handgun, you’re right!

Designed by Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Cooper in 1983 to replace the .45 ACP as the perfect combat pistol, the 10mm has a flatter trajectory, transfers energy better from bullet to target, and holds its accuracy at a greater range than the .45 Auto. It features a cartridge short enough to use in a semi-automatic pistol, but one that still reaches the energy and power of revolver Magnum rounds.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox issued a call Monday for a special session later this week, primarily so lawmakers can accept more than $1.5 billion in federal coronavirus relief money. In the wide-ranging session, lawmakers will also consider changes to local government building regulations, industrial hemp rules and the sale of electronic cigarettes and nicotine products. They will have the opportunity to fix technical errors or unintended consequences in several bills that passed in the spring legislative session.

NRA has often lamented about how the legacy media long-ago abandoned any semblance of neutrality when it comes to the issue of gun control. Most people expect “news” coverage to simply report the facts related to the events of the day—including events related to public policy discussions—then let the public decide what those facts mean to them. But when it comes to topics related to firearms and the Second Amendment, we have said for decades that most in the media intentionally spin their coverage to present firearms and the rights of law-abiding gun owners in a negative light; their intent being to help promote advancing restrictions on the lawful ownership of firearms.

As firearms continue to sell at record pace, manufacturers are struggling to keep up with demand for existing models. Nonetheless, innovation continues. We are seeing introductions of MRDS-ready, striker-fired, polymer-frame pistols, including higher-capacity micro-9s. Also hitting the market with some frequency are large-format pistols in both rifle and pistol calibers. And, of course, super-premium 1911s continue to be unveiled at the aspirational end of the market.

The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) has long protected the gun industry from abusive lawsuits that the anti-gun Left would file if they could. No gunmaker can be sued for mass shootings or anything where their products were unknowingly and unwillingly used in a crime. It must be something serious that knowingly selling to FFLs that did business with straw purchasers or worse, sold guns with issues, like defective safeties, and did nothing about it.

If that’s the case, he’s liable to cause a social and political earthquake if he ever takes a position on the Second Amendment.

During Sunday’s episode of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver painted Stand Your Ground laws asa cause of increased violence in some states and said they benefit white people whom he suggests have an inherent fear of black Americans.

Stand Your Ground laws are designed to place the onus on the aggressor in a situation where an innocent person comes under attack and believes his or her life is in jeopardy. In such a situation, Stand Your Ground laws shield would-be victims for using lethal force to save innocent life.

Gov. Henry McMaster said Monday he signed into law a bill allowing people with concealed weapons permits from the state to carry their guns in the open. McMaster posted on Twitter that he was keeping his promise to sign any bill that protects or expands gun rights. The proposal allows so-called open carry of guns for people who undergo training and background checks so they can keep guns hidden under a jacket or other clothing or in their vehicle anywhere there isn’t a sign prohibiting it.

Some movies are instant classics for their acting, their direction, or their cinematography. Some movies, on the other hand, become cult classics based on the character in the film and the guns they use. While these movies certainly have good acting and direction, they became instant classics in part because of the guns and the main characters' affinity for them. While this list is in no way supposed to be comprehensive, it’s a great starting place for any serious gun connoisseur. In no specific order, let’s check out five classic movies and the guns that made them.

The Illinois Supreme Court this year will decide whether a Cook County tax on firearms and ammunition is unconstitutional on grounds taxes can’t be levied on items that allow people to exercise their “fundamental” rights. The Michigan Capitol Commission on Monday voted unanimously to close what its members consider a loophole in the Capitol's months-old open carry ban to ensure that people with concealed pistol licenses can only be carried concealed. The initial wording of the policy approved in January was meant to retain allowances for those with the licenses to carry concealed, but opaque wording left a loophole for them also to carry openly. The commission learned of the loophole in April after a man entered the Capitol with a holstered handgun visible on his right hip and explained the exemption to Michigan State Police.

Edward Caniglia and his wife had a nasty fight on Aug. 20, 2015, so bitter that his wife decided to spend the night at a hotel. When Caniglia didn't answer the phone the next day, his wife, Kim, called the Cranston police, worrying that he might be suicidal. He had retrieved an unloaded gun during their argument the day before and said, “Why don’t you just shoot me and get me out of my misery.”

In the run-up to the 2020 election, most of the Democratic candidates were united in pushing for a national “gun buyback” program. Sen. Bernie Sanders tweeted, “The federal government must ban assault weapons and implement a buyback program to get assault weapons off the streets.” Candidate and now Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned on a promise to impose a “mandatory gun buyback program,” as did Joe Biden (“Biden will also institute a program to buy back weapons of war currently on our streets”).

Based on hard, empirical data, the vast majority of Americans have no idea who Samantha Bee is. She has a “comedy” show on basic cable, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, but hardly anybody really watches it. Her ratings tend to be pretty low, with what could generously be described as a niche audience of around half-a-million per broadcast. Those kinds of numbers would probably get her cut from beleaguered CNN. To make matters worse, Full Frontal gets a rather embarrassing Rotten Tomatoes Average Audience Score of 28%, although the program’s website falsely claims, “The show has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.”

It’s payback time in the Old Dominion — if Virginia gun owners want to right the wrongs done last year by the new Democrat majority, they will turn out Nov. 2 in numbers not seen for many years during off-year elections. Take this to the bank: The whole country will be watching.

One important aspect of responsible gun ownership is securing your firearms in a manner that minimizes the possibility of unauthorized access. And a steel safe is far more effective in this regard than an old-fashioned wooden gun cabinet. Nonetheless, the ability for authorized personnel to quickly and efficiently gain access to the safe’s contents should the need arise is of paramount importance to the armed citizen who just heard a bump in the night.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property . . . Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them. — Thomas Paine, Thoughts on Defensive War (1775).
