... "Pre-Heller Dan Simpson had a laundry list of demands sure to ignite a civil war, including total civilian disarmament. Following a 'three month amnesty… Special squads of police would be formed… Then, on a random basis to permit no advance warning, city blocks and stretches of suburban and rural areas would be cordoned off and searches carried out in every business, dwelling, and empty building. All firearms would be seized. The owners of weapons found in the searches would be prosecuted: $1,000 and 1 year in prison for each firearm… On the streets it would be a question of stop-and-search of anyone, even grandma with her walker, with the same penalties for 'carrying.'" ... |

"Some years ago I was invited to debate on live radio a representative from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Formerly Handgun Control, Inc., this organization is devoted to the disarmament of American citizens. As an advocate of the Second Amendment, I took the key position that our framers meant to protect an individual right to bear arms, and, having just come off a hard-fought war against a tyrannical government, intended that armament of the populace would act as a deterrent against future government tyranny. This, charged my opponent, was the same mind-set held by people such as Timothy McVeigh ..."

They’ve had plenty of time to make mistakes, learn from them, and then apply those lessons to another generation of firearms. They do still make mistakes (hey, who doesn't?), but those mistakes are rare, meaning that if you go to buy or shoot a Beretta firearm, chances are that it will perform just as you expect." ... |

After a brief Powerpoint intro to active shooters—they exist and they need shooting—the rabbi, a cadre of cops and I did the live fire thing. Moving and shooting. Shooting and moving. Trying not to hit the innocents on the targets. What my teammates and I discovered: a rifle is a whole lot better an anti-active shooter weapon than a pistol. He bought the gun last year for long range target shooting with some varmint hunting mixed in for good measure. Unfortunately, his work schedule has been pretty insane for the last few months and he actually hasn’t had a chance to do much more than warm up the barrel and get it roughly sighted in. Listening to him recount the sad story of his ownership a few weeks ago, I (jokingly) offered to take it off his hands for a few weeks. To my surprise he replied, 'Really? You’d do that for me?
