It’s so obvious it shouldn’t have to go on a billboard, but it’s a sign of the times that such a statement needs to be flashed on a 670-square-foot digital screen so that thousands of sets of eyes can see it each day. “Guns left in cars get stolen.” That’s the message from Daytona Beach police Chief Craig Capri, who for more than a year has warned the public against keeping firearms inside unlocked vehicles. Last week, the digital billboard featuring his face next to the aforementioned sentence was unveiled at the corner of Mason and Highland avenues. |

They seem to be here to stay. Despite a passionate outpouring from high school students, including rallies across the country, little to nothing likely will change soon in North Carolina when it comes to sales of, or access to, AR-15 rifles, the high-capacity, rapid-fire weapons used in recent mass shootings. "They’re not going to come knocking on our doors, asking for our guns. There’s too many of us," said Haywood County resident Javier Moraga, a 26-year-old gun enthusiast who works at an Asheville hotel. |

U.S. Senate Democrats want states to license handgun purchasers and lawmakers have introduced a bill that would encourage states to do so by providing federal grants. Efforts to reduce gun violence continues from lawmakers on Capitol Hill. “Just like you need a license to drive a car you should get a license to purchase a handgun,” Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) said. Van Hollen introduced the Handgun Licensing Purchaser Act that would motivate states through federal grants to require individuals to obtain a license before buying a handgun, something Maryland currently does. |

Saying she fears for her safety, a young woman who wants to join the National Rifle Association’s challenge to a new Florida law that made it illegal to sell guns to anyone under age 21 is asking a federal court to keep her identity secret. In court filings seeking a federal judge’s permission to proceed with the pseudonym “Jane Doe” for the woman, the NRA relied heavily on a sworn statement by the group's Florida lobbyist, Marion Hammer, who said she has received “scores” of threatening phone calls and emails following a February mass shooting at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 14 students and three faculty members dead. |
