With the continuing debate over the 2nd Amendment, I feel it is necessary to look to the past for a lesson on what happens when people have no means of self defense. In the latter part of the Roman Empire, the people had been disarmed by law as the emperors sought to control every aspect of life.
In 455 A.D. the Vandals, a Germanic tribe, from where we get our term for wanton destruction, invaded Italy and sacked the city of Rome. There were not enough soldiers to protect the people from the depredations of the Vandals ,and having no means of defending themselves, they were brutalized and plundered without mercy. |

“This year in Washington (state),” the self-congratulatory email from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America’s Washington chapter read, “our volunteers made their voices heard.”
But those voices could not drown out the ten gun shots heard on a dramatic 911 audio released by the King County Sheriff’s Department, fired by a homeowner who was on the phone with a remarkably cool-headed dispatcher when a home invader came at him. The armed homeowner, who has not been identified, was released and will reportedly not face any criminal charges, according to the Seattle P-I.com.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has upheld a lower court's decision that Armslist's ads and tools are protected by the Communications Decency Act (CDA). The act was designed to preserve freedom of speech on the Internet by immunizing web sites for the publishing of third party content. Armslist facilitates the communication between willing firearm sellers and buyers. The lower court had been overturned by a Wisconsin Court of Appeals. This decision protects both First and Second Amendment rights. |

Shooting on the move is most often discussed in terms of being an advanced shooting skill. In my experience, defensive shooting classes rarely cover shooting on the move in a realistic way. The common approach to teaching this skill involves having the line of shooters walk slowly towards or away from the target while shooting. This is little more than a skill builder, perhaps, as walking casually towards a threat would be an absurd tactic under most realistic circumstances. Aggressive lateral movement while shooting is far more realistic. But this is harder to facilitate in training. So most instructors simply ignore developing this skill. |

Regarding suicide by firearm: According to the Vermont Department of Mental Health, in 2016 there were 1,141 suicide attempts. Of those, 1,070 or 94% were attempts using something other than a firearm. For those suicides where a firearm was used, the vast majority were done with a firearm that was already owned.
It is actually a pretty rare event when a person goes to a store, buys a firearm and then kills themselves with it. |

A 71-year-old Milan man now walks free after a Gibson County jury determined he was not guilty in the shooting death of another man five years ago.
Jerry Heavner was accused of shooting then-58-year-old James Cannon in the head after an argument in December 2013.
The jury decided on April 23 that Heavner acted in self-defense. The decision puts an end to a yearslong case that included a mistrial in 2014 due to audience comments heard by the jury and a rejected appeal attempt. |

A short while ago I reviewed the Ruger Security-9 full-size 9mm pistol and just last week, Ruger introduced their new Security-9 Compact model. I appreciate the excellent performance and features of the full-size gun, so I wanted to try their new short-barreled compact pistol for concealed carry use. Was it equally impressive and would it work for concealed carry? How would it measure up to my ten criteria, especially its accuracy, reliability, and concealability? This is my evaluation and field test of it. |

The Umatilla County Board of Commissioners voted down putting a Second Amendment sanctuary question on the ballot. Chairman George Murdock says the commissioners support the right to bear arms, but there were problems with the way the proposal was written.
“On the advice of the sheriff and legal counsel, including a decision made in Columbia County, there were some constitutional questions and the commissioners chose not to adopt the document,” Murdock said. |
