A federal appeals court determined Massachusetts’ ban on certain semi-automatic firearms and magazines aligns with historical firearm regulation and doesn’t violate the Second Amendment.
The First Circuit Court of Appeals, in a unanimous decision by a three-judge panel, confirmed the denial of a preliminary injunction against Massachusetts’ law prohibiting the sale of so-called “assault weapons” such as the AR-15 and magazines that hold over ten rounds. The court found that its previous decision upholding a similar Rhode Island magazine ban also applied to Massachusetts’ restrictions on firearms. |

The question presented in Wolford v. Lopez is:
Whether the Second Amendment allows a State to make it unlawful for concealed-carry license-holders to carry firearms on private property open to the public without the property owner's express authorization.
And here's the Introduction from the government's brief:
From the earliest days of the republic, individuals have been free to carry firearms on private property unless the property owner directs otherwise. And in NYSRPA v. Bruen (2022), this Court confirmed that restrictions on carrying firearms for lawful purposes such as self-defense violate the Second Amendment unless they fit within a discernible historical tradition.

On April 30, 2025, the Texas Senate approved Senate Bill 1065 with a 20–11 vote, aiming to prohibit contractors leasing government-owned property from enforcing firearm bans, such as the one implemented by the State Fair of Texas. The bill now advances to the Texas House of Representatives for consideration.
The State Fair instituted its firearm ban in 2024 following a 2023 incident where a gunman injured three attendees. Under the current policy, only licensed peace officers are permitted to carry firearms on the fairgrounds. |

An Asian American and lifelong liberal from the San Francisco Bay Area, I became a first-time gun owner as a 42-year-old in 2011. I began a now 14-year journey into an unfamiliar and complex world of firearms. In my work, I draw on both my personal experiences and sociological observations to understand the long-standing presence of a robust legal gun culture in America.
In contrast to the dominant scholarly approaches, which focus on gun deviance and harm, I find there is more to firearms than criminal violence, injury and death; more to gun owners than straight white men; and more to gun culture than democracy-destroying right-wing politics.
Let me share five observations essential to understanding guns in America: |

A young man from Garner learned the hard way that targeting an armed citizen can quickly backfire. On March 29, a concealed carrier defended himself from an alleged carjacking attempt in the parking lot of a Speedway/Wendy’s location at 5170 Veterans Parkway near Interstate 40 in Johnston County.
According to law enforcement, 19-year-old Dominic Dion Robinson approached the intended victim and reportedly aimed a firearm while demanding the man’s vehicle, phone, and money. However, what Robinson didn’t expect was that his would-be victim was carrying a concealed handgun. Acting quickly and within his legal rights, the intended victim drew his firearm and shot Robinson in what authorities determined was a clear act of self-defense.

The United States has filed an amicus curiae brief in support of the cert petition in Wolford v. Lopez seeking review of the following issue: "Whether the Second Amendment allows a State to make it unlawful for concealed-carry license-holders to carry firearms on private property open to the public without the property owner's express authorization." As the brief explains, "after Bruen, five States, including Hawaii, inverted the longstanding presumption and enacted a novel default rule under which individuals may carry firearms on private property only if the owner provides express authorization, such as by posting a conspicuous sign allowing guns." The Ninth Circuit upheld Hawaii's law. |

The Department of Justice (DOJ) took the unusual step of asking the Supreme Court to take up a Second Amendment case in which the Federal Government is not a party.
On Thursday, the DOJ said The Court should weigh in on whether Hawaii’s ban on carrying guns in publicly accessible private property is Constitutional. It argued the prohibition violates the Second Amendment and is an affront to the 2022 landmark ruling in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen. DOJ said the Supreme Court should accept the case and strike down that section of the state’s gun-carry law. |

Conservatives often say that the Second Amendment safeguards the First Amendment, and by extension, all our constitutional rights. But who ensures the Second Amendment itself remains secure?
The answer lies with the small, independent gun store owners across America – especially the veterans among them – who stand as steadfast defenders of our God-given right to self-defense. Thanks to the Trump administration and pro-Second Amendment organizations like the National Rifle Association (NRA), Gun Owners of America (GOA), and the Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC), these heroes are finally getting the support they deserve against the tyrannical overreach of the Biden era. |

The last month has clarified how the Trump Administration plans to approach the gun rights of non-violent felons. Its preferred course offers some benefits but also real downsides for gun-rights advocates.
Back in mid-March, the Department of Justice (DOJ) first unveiled its plan to revive an executive agency process for restoring Second Amendment rights to individuals who are prohibited from possessing firearms. Then, on Monday, the agency released the first results from that action, publishing the names of ten individuals in the Federal Register who now have gun rights again at the determination of Attorney General Pam Bondi. |

A district court dismissed the charge against Brown in January, holding that the ban violated the Second Amendment as it applied to him. The government then appealed to the Fifth Circuit.
A brief filed April 24 by Patrick Lemon, acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi, argued that “machine guns are not the kind of arms protected by the Second Amendment,” and that America’s “history of regulating dangerous and unusual weapons confirms [the federal machine gun ban’s] constitutionality.” The brief drew quick condemnation from the Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC), which called the brief both “horribly flawed” and “insanely offensive.” |

President Donald Trump has consistently failed to take action to improve public safety, particularly when it comes to addressing gun violence. Instead, the Trump administration has rolled back safety measures, prioritizing the interests of the gun industry over the protection of families and communities. These actions were frequently framed as efforts to safeguard Second Amendment rights1 or eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.2 In reality, they leave American citizens more vulnerable while empowering and enriching the very industry responsible for the proliferation of illegal firearms that are taking lives every day. |

The Department of Justice (DOJ) fleshed out its approach to Second Amendment litigation in two key areas this week.
First, we got a full picture of how the department plans to approach gun-rights restoration. Namely, through its own executive process rather than the courts. Contributing Writer Jake Fogelman looks at the pros and cons of taking that approach over taking the question to the Supreme Court.
Then, we got news that the DOJ is asking The Court to take up a different gun-rights case. This one deals with one of the Bruen-response laws that have popped up around the country in the wake of that landmark Supreme Court ruling. |

From Jan. 1 through April 30, 2025, just three mass murders occurred, resulting in a total of 12 people killed. There were also 92 mass shootings (including the 12 mass murders), resulting in a total of 92 people killed. To put these numbers into perspective, for all of 2024, there were 30 mass murders (killing 130) and 502 mass shootings (killing 509).
As a further point of comparison, during the first nine months of 2024, around 106 people were killed on average per day in traffic-related accidents.
If these mass murder and mass shooting trends continue, 2025 will go on record as the safest year in more than a decade with respect to high-profile firearm events. |

In a move that could significantly expand gun rights for law-abiding Americans, House Republicans are advancing legislation that would allow concealed carry permit holders to travel freely across state lines without fear of becoming accidental criminals. The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act has gained substantial momentum, with President Donald Trump pledging his full support for the measure.
The proposed legislation would create a system where states must recognize concealed carry permits issued by other states, similar to how driver’s licenses are currently recognized nationwide. |

After Assistant U.S. Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon acknowledged she is expanding the mission of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division to include a sharp focus on protecting and enforcing the Second Amendment, as noted by the Daily Caller, the establishment media went on the attack.
Instead of even mentioning her interest in gun rights, major media news outlets portrayed her as endangering voting rights and protecting minorities from discrimination. For example, MSNBC’s spin was to report what appears to be a mass exodus of Civil Rights Division attorneys, blaming Dhillon’s political agenda and referring to her as a “MAGA lawyer.”. |
