"Minnesota lawmakers are to be congratulated for their quick, decisive effort to revive that state's reasonable personal protection act today, said Joe Waldron, executive director of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA)."
"Passage of the bill by an 86-47 vote in the House of Representatives just days after the Senate approved the measure in a lopsided 44-21 vote 'was the right thing to do,' Waldron said."
"'This sends a message to criminals that Minnesota citizens are not going to be made easy targets, through the efforts of anti-gunners or because of a court ruling,' Waldron observed. 'Minnesota gun rights activists should be congratulated for quickly reviving this law, thanks to Sen. Pat Pariseau and Rep. Larry Howes, who took leadership positions to shepherd this important legislation through both chambers.'" ... |

Sarah Brady, chair of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement:
"It would be obscene for Congress to eliminate District of Columbia gun laws. The Mayor is against it. The Police Chief is against it. The Washington D.C. business community is against it. And the people who live there are against it.
"Revoking D.C.'s gun regulations is like pouring gasoline on smoldering coals. Anyone who follows the gun violence problems that Washington D.C. has struggled with can't possibly, honestly believe that the answer is a lot more guns." |

"There are those who argue that burgers and guns are both inherently dangerous. According to this logic, someone who eats too many burgers and develops heart disease should be able to sue the fast-food restaurant that served them platters of fat and calories. On the gun side, the litigious among us claim that if a gun is used to commit a crime, the gun manufacturer should be the target of a civil lawsuit by the victim. Tough words from the District's congressional delegate over efforts to repeal the city's tough gun laws.
Eleanor Holmes Norton calls it an assault on home rule orchestrated by the National Rifle Association.
She accuses the gun lobby of attempting to see to it that more D.C. children get killed. She says a greater proliferation of guns in the city would make that happen.
Norton joined the city's business and political leaders last year in fighting off efforts to pass similar legislation.
She's particularly surprised that Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is co-sponsoring the latest effort, because Hutchison is a former chair of the Senate subcommittee that oversaw District appropriations. |

"I write this on May 17, the day of Billy Walsh's funeral. 'Big Billy' was the bouncer at Nye's Polonaise Room who was shot and killed last Thursday by a customer he had to kick out. ..." ...
"Every state legislator probably already knows that a conceal-and-carry permit holder killed Billy Walsh. They know that Billy didn't do anything wrong, that he's dead because the guy didn't like getting kicked out of Nye's." ...
"In a fistfight, Billy would have had better-than-average odds. How many more innocent people will be recklessly killed by conceal-and-carry permit holders before Minnesotans say we do not want an environment where guns are everywhere, just waiting for a temper to be lost? If it requires legislation to defeat conceal-and-carry, they can call it 'Big Billy's Bill.'" -------
Submitter's Note: As pointed out in this story, the shooter left the bar, then returned 30 - 45 minutes later, about the right amount of time for him to drive home and get a gun. So the fact the he had a permit is completely irrelevant. Not that facts have ever been enough to stop an anti from dancing on the grave of a victim. |

Domestic violence victims would get easier access to concealed handgun permits under a bill before the state House.
A House judiciary committee already has approved the idea.
The bill would apply to any domestic violence victim with a protective order.
That order would allow a local sheriff to issue a temporary concealed handgun permit.
"You still get a background check,” Rep. Linda Johnson (R-Cabarrus) explained. “You still get the same options. But it does address the urgency of the domestic violence victim. So it will give the sheriff another tool to use in trying to help domestic violence victims."
The state House could vote on the bill next week. |

Philippine columnist Pablo Hernandez packs an Ingram machine pistol -- and says he used it to good effect when gunmen tried to make him the latest victim in a wave of media murders in the Southeast Asian country.
"It's getting worse," Hernandez said on Thursday, a day after he traded shots with two men on a motorcycle when he and a friend noticed his car was being followed in Manila.
"This government is not sincere in arresting the masterminds because their concentration is only on the hired killers."
The Philippines prides itself on having the freest press in the region but media groups have criticised the government for failing to halt the attacks, many of them apparently related to reporting on corrupt officials and business deals. |
