"From Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the [CCRKBA], and Dave Workman, senior editor of Gun Week:"

"Adhering to a pattern of behavior that has developed over the years, a tiny contingent of gun prohibitionists paraded outside of the Charlotte Convention Center while the [NRA] was hosting its record-breaking members' meeting, but they remained only long enough to get some camera time with local news crews."

"Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign ... came to Charlotte to ... get his name in the local media. Where the NRA can pull more than 70,000 members, the Brady bunch could barely muster two dozen protesters to parade around for perhaps an hour, then leave satisfied that the 5 o'clock news would carry their images." ...

"Among other things, the Ohio Sovereignty Amendment would allow juries to nullify laws; expand the right to bear arms and maintain militias; permit the recall of elected officials by petition signatures alone; ban federal enforcement of laws except through a county sheriff; and require that all public school operations through the 12th grade be regulated at the district level only." ...

The OAS Firearms Convention Is Incompatible with American Liberties

"Abstract: President Barack Obama has called on the Senate to ratify CIFTA, the Inter-American Convention Against the Illicit Manufacture of and Trafficking in Firearms, but the convention poses serious prudential risks to liberties guaranteed by the First and Second Amendments. The convention appears to be an end run around domestic obstacles to gun control. Furthermore, ratification of the convention would undermine U.S. sovereignty by legally binding it to fulfill obligations that some current signatories already disregard. The U.S. would be best served by continuing existing programs, cooperating with other countries on a bilateral basis, and making and enforcing its own laws to combat the traffic in illicit arms." ...

"When prominent historian Michael Bellesiles (be-LEALs) met fierce criticism of his book, Arming America, in 2000 and beyond, much of academia rallied to his support. It was a failed effort and resulted in a sort of East Anglia/Hockey Stick/Climatic Research Unit epic debacle for Second Amendment opponents."

"Michael Bellesiles was forced to resign his positions at Emory University and suffered the ignominy of being the first winner of the coveted and prestigious Bancroft Prize to have it rescinded."

"A Democrat who argues for a right to bear arms is treated similarly to a Republican who argues for a right to an abortion. Although there is no inherent contradiction in either position, zealots decry any deviation from the orthodox party platform. However, arguing that the Second Amendment refers to an individual right does not mean the gun control debate is over. The fact that Americans have a right to bear arms does not mean they have a right to bear arms in any way they choose. Strict scrutiny, the highest standard available for reviewing the constitutionality of statutes, is far from incompatible with the goals of many gun control advocates. ..." ...

"Doug Kendall, president of the liberal Constitutional Accountability Center, has a long post explaining why conservative legal activist Ken Klukowski is wrong about Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan and the Second Amendment. Submitter's Note: No matter how many times you repeat a lie, it is still a lie. 90% of trace requests came back as US guns, but only 20% of seized guns were submitted for tracing, which means that 18% of guns seized were traced to the US. Never answered is the question of how many of those guns were supplied by the US to the Mexican gov't who then 'lost track' of them.

"The Supreme Court's decision on the Second Amendment establishing the right of people to bear arms should halt any fears of government confiscation of guns. We should now proceed to produce intelligent gun laws that save lives."

"Assault weapons, like machine guns, should require rigorous government regulation to protect both police and citizens. Police in Pine Bluff say a woman working in a fast food restaurant struggled with a robber and then shot him after he put aside his gun so he could stuff cash into a bag.

The suspect, 22-year-old Jason Robinson, was treated early Tuesday for a thigh wound and taken to jail. Formal charges are due Wednesday.

The Burger King worker told police she was counting money when the robber approached the restaurant's office late Monday night. The robber threatened to kill her, and then put the gun down so he could put the night's take into a bag.

Police say the worker grabbed the gun. She and the robber started to wrestle and was shot in the struggle. The woman put Robinson in a headlock and called police, who arrested Robinson.

"The April 21 edition contained a letter from Abigayle Tobia condemning the TEA Party rally held Saturday, April 17, of candidates campaigning on public property, blocking the northern entrance to Gateway Museum, bullying city council members into letting us use the area and carrying handguns. A thorough investigation of these allegations has been made." ...

"Fourth, yes, several of the participants were carrying handguns responsibly, as they do each day of their lives, creating a safer environment for all present!"

"We are grateful to Ms. Tobia in recognizing and stating the First and Second Amendment rights of the citizens of Farmington and of those all across America." ...

"I applaud Charles Simpson's letter regarding pending legislation to further erode our Second Amendment rights. ... As I understand high school English, we can own and carry weapons without government interference. Only convicted felons lose this and other rights for breaking our laws."

"When a sheriff or police chief denies their citizens access to concealed carry permits, they deny their citizenry access to a 'right' that other Californians and Americans have. This capricious ability and power seems to violate the 10th and 14th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The Second Amendment clearly states we all can 'bear' or carry arms, and is likewise violated." ...

"The idea of a responsible American exercising his or her second amendment right to bear arms has never scared or threatened me."

"As someone whose job is to write about crime on a regular basis, I'm very supportive of law-abiding citizens who want to do any and everything possible to protect themselves."

"But I recently learned that the first step to protecting yourself from violent criminals is not going out and buying a gun."

"The first step is education. That's why I found a recent National Rifle Association Basic Pistol Shooting course I took ... to be very beneficial." ...

"Emeryville's Chief of Police, Ken James – outspoken proponent of a measure that would criminalize the open carrying of firearms in all public areas of the state – will be attending a public forum debate on May 26th entitled, 'Exploring California's Open Carry Policy.'"

"James has argued that AB 1934, which the California Assembly Appropriations Committee recently passed, would eliminate the imminent risk to police officers that he feels open carrying promotes. However, the police chief isn't for criminalizing open carry for all private citizens, as he seems to favor protection for specific groups such as the Northern California Militia." ...

"The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is hoping to bring its pistol permit system into the 21st century."

"Lt. Tor Tryland said the Sheriff’s Office has asked the Greene County Legislature to allow it to buy hardware, software and supplies to use the digital Gun Keeper II permit system. He said the cost is about $24,200 and would include the purchase of a computer."

"Tryland said the new system would not contain new information about people’s guns or mandate a yearly fee. Rather, he said, it simply would be a digital version of the service already provided, though plastic cards would be issued in the future rather than the paper permits currently used." ...

"Mona Docteur, the founder of a Ravalli County group called Celebrating Conservatism, will host this coming weekend what she hopes will be a gathering of thousands at the University of Montana." ...

"One of the central tenets of Celebrating Conservatism’s gatherings at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds has been active observance of the right to bear arms."

"But the Liberty Convention is being held at UM’s Adams Center. And that means the Second Amendment observance won't be possible, as Montana University System policy prevents[sic] firearms on campus." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: I believe MUS policy prohibits firearms but does nothing to prevent them from being on campus.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
It will be of little avail to the people that the laws are made by men of their own choice if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood. —JAMES MADISON
