Glocester, on Thursday, became the sixth western Rhode Island location to hold a Second Amendment Sanctuary City town council hearing. There was plenty of discussion leading up to it on the very active Glocester Facebook group and the Town Hall was packed – 84 people in the meeting room with as many, if not more, unable to find a seat gathered outside in the hallway.

Sen Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) recently came out with a proposal to "end gun violence." In her plan, she called for the typical points ant-gunners love to cling to. She wants to establish universal background checks; create a federal law against trafficking guns; reestablish an assault weapons ban; ban bump stocks (hello, that's already been done) and "large-capacity" magazines.

State Parks Chief Sam England recently unveiled plans for the hunts this fall, five of which will be bow hunting only and the sixth park will allow for hunting with a bow or muzzleloader. “They’ll be on the last Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of October through the second week of November,” England said. “There will be three date opportunities to apply at six parks.”

After reading an article that praised the efforts of radical anti-gun activist Shannon Watts and her attempt to leverage the irrational gun-fear of Levis's executives, it was clear that Watts's focus is severely misguided. To the anti-gun crowd, violating the rights of their fellow citizens is "success," regardless of the number of people left unarmed and helpless in the wake of their feel-good crusade. |

As we reflect on National Police Week, which ended Saturday, let’s provide our law enforcement across the country every tool possible to prevent senseless acts of gun violence from harming or claiming the lives of innocent people, including our law enforcement officers. Children are frequently asked the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The answer for Timothy “Jake” Laird from Noblesville was always the same. He dreamed of becoming a police officer.

For decades, senseless gun violence has scarred our country physically, emotionally, and financially. The failure of our elected officials to create change through policymaking has allowed gun violence to terrorize our communities, from schools to places of worship to workplaces. Indeed, we were again reminded this month of just how little progress our leaders have made on gun control. Just weeks after the 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting, two people entered another school in Colorado and fatally shot one student and severely injured eight others.

A reader submitted a question about heavier bullets in reloads possibly causing rifle groups to widen.
Q: When I’m not on the firing line, the rest of my spare time is spent at the reloading bench and I’ve run across an odd anomaly I hope you can help me with. When I go to heavier match-grade bullets with a slightly improved ballistic coefficient, my rifle’s groups seem to widen. Any idea why?

Preseason scouting is paramount to early season success, but in heavily hunted areas, all that hard effort soon goes by the wayside. Despite weeks of preparation, turkey hunters are forced to “go in cold” in hopes their acumen will carry the day. Such was the case for me as Maine’s spring season entered its second week. I’d scouted 17 flocks before the season opener, learned their routines and had high hopes. By the end of the first week, most of those birds had been tagged, processed and quite possibly consumed. It was now a matter of picking up scraps fallen from the turkey table, often backwoods birds that the more casual roadside scouting missions never reveal.

The popularity of AR-style firearms in centerfire pistol calibers has greatly increased in the past few years, thanks to a variety of reasons. As 9mm ammunition is less-expensive than centerfire rifle rounds and also can be shot with less recoil, shooters have taken to AR-style pistol-caliber carbines for competition, self-defense and range use. This new boom led to many new accessories designed to allow AR owners to make use of different magazines to feed these popular platforms. |

In the early 1990s, a handful of calibers emerged to challenge the nine-millimeter as the dominant semi-automatic handgun round. One of these, the .357 Sig, is the caliber of choice for the Glock 31 pistol. The Glock 31 is the company’s offering for those into high velocity or long distance handgun shooting. The G31 also comes with a large magazine capacity, making it an excellent self-defense or duty sidearm. |

As NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox reported in March, the U.S. Supreme Court has taken up a challenge by an NRA state affiliate to a New York City gun control scheme that effectively prohibits lawfully licensed handgun owners from leaving the city with their own firearms. The plaintiffs in the case have raised a number of objections to the regime, the foremost of which is that it violates the Second Amendment. The case is New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. New York City. |

Following a request made by Rhode Island State Senator Elaine Morgan that towns declare themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuaries,” the Exeter Town Council will be taking up the issue at its next meeting, where a discussion and possible vote on a resolution will take place. Last week, Morgan–whose district includes Hopkinton, Charlestown, Richmond, West Greenwich and Exeter–sent letters to the councils and police chiefs in the towns she represents, urging them to make the declaration that police departments have the right to “exercise sound discretion when enforcing laws impacting the rights of citizens under the second amendment.” |

On the heels of Nebraska’s second mountain lion hunting season, state officials have started preparing for a third hunt next year. The Game and Parks Commission announced proposed regulation changes for the 2020 season on Friday. A public hearing on the proposal is set for June 21 at a commission meeting in Alma, Nebraska. Sam Wilson, the manager of the agency’s furbearer and carnivore program, said the changes largely involve housekeeping items, such as changing dates to match the 2020 calendar and clarifying the requirements for inspection of animals killed during the hunt.
