As gun violence continues unabated in our country, it has become clear that the Republican Party has no intention of doing anything about it, short of offering thoughts and prayers to the victims’ families. That and a plethora of useless bromides such as “the only thing to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”
The roots of the modern gun debate go back to the 1963, Kennedy assassination, when Democratic senator Thomas Dodd from Connecticut introduced legislation restricting the sale of mail order rifles. |

Right-wing media are yet again running to the side of an accused vigilante killer, framing Daniel Penny — who has been charged with choking Jordan Neely to death on a New York subway — as a “hero” deserving of “unwavering” political and financial support.
On May 1, Penny placed Neely in a chokehold that lasted at least three minutes. One witness who filmed the homicide claimed Neely — an unhoused Black man who had long suffered with mental illness following the murder of his mother — was restrained for as long as 15 minutes. |

A gunman, who testified he was acting in self-defense during a fatal shooting outside Headliners Barber Shop in downtown Stillwater, was acquitted of first-degree manslaughter of Landon Ray Aufleger, 25, of Stillwater, by a Payne County jury that deliberated for six hours before returning a verdict at 10 pm Friday.
The defendant, Darrin Joseph Bacchus, 26, of Stillwater, had been severely beaten by four men inside the barber shop while he was waiting to get a haircut, he told the jury of seven men and five women. Bacchus testified that he was punched, had a broken nose, and got strangled while he was on the ground in the barber shop at 12th and Main St. |

A new national poll shows access to guns and firearms has become top of mind for many Americans.
A poll by Axios-Ipsos shows access to guns and firearms jumped to the top spot of public health concerns among Americans polled – surpassing opioids and fentanyl.
According to the poll, 26% of respondents said they believed access to guns and firearms is the top threat to U.S. public health. That number is up from 17% in the last poll in February. |

A large share of the American public supports stricter gun laws and certain gun reforms like expanded background checks and barring mentally ill people from buying guns. Boston.com readers feel that age limits should be in place as well.

A bill introduced by newly-elected State Sen. Senator Catherine Blakespear (D-Encinitas) requiring California gun sellers to post warnings about the dangers of firearms in the home is now making its way to the state Assembly.
First introduced in February, Senate Bill 417 would require more signage in gun stores to help prevent unnecessary deaths or suicide.
SB 417 was approved on a bipartisan vote of 32 to 4, with the four votes against the bill from State Sens. Marie Alvarado-Gil, Brian Dahle, Brian Jones, and Roger Niello. |

Crime happens everywhere and at any time. It was about four o’clock in the morning when a store clerk stopped an armed robber who’d been running from the police. This is what happened that morning in Kingsland, Georgia.
The clerk was working at a gas station/convenience store. It was still dark when a customer ran inside and told the clerk to hand over his car keys. The clerk’s car was the only car in front of the store at that hour. Also, the robber had a gun in his hands. The clerk handed over his keys rather than get in a gunfight with someone who already had his gun out. The attacker ran out of the store and jumped into the clerk’s car. |

Police are looking into whether a man shot and killed his neighbor in self-defense Thursday night in Northeast Albuquerque.
Rebecca Atkins, an Albuquerque police spokeswoman, said officers responded around 10 p.m. to the shooting at the Union 505 apartments just southwest of the Big I. She said police found one man dead near an apartment and detained the shooter.
Atkins said the shooter told police his neighbor charged at him and he “shot him as a result.” She said the man said he had issues with the neighbor in the past. |

A Dollar General store clerk in Louisiana has been cleared of a manslaughter charge after a grand jury found there was not enough evidence in the case.
Rafus Anderson was charged with manslaughter after shooting and killing an armed robbery suspect in January.
According to the Monroe Police Department, they responded to an armed robbery call at the store located in Monroe on Jan. 2.
Authorities said Anderson shot the robber, later identified as Monquarius Thomas, and they found him outside of the store on the ground with the money he was accused of taking.
Thomas ended up dying. |

The rush by the Left to vilify former Marine Daniel Penny before Americans have all the facts of his case could have a negative effect on American males’ willingness to be heroes, Sen. Josh Hawley said Thursday.
The Missouri Republican discussed Penny’s case during an interview with The Daily Signal about his new book, “Manhood: The Masculine Virtues America Needs,” following news that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg had charged Penny with second-degree manslaughter in the death in the New York subway of Jordan Neely.
The senator pointed out that the American people still don’t have all the facts and details necessary to understand the incident fully. |

Just hours after Governor Wes Moore signed a new gun control bill into law in Maryland, there was a flurry of lawsuits challenging it.
Maryland's gun control law was passed in direct response to the Supreme Court's decision last June affirming the Second Amendment right to carry a gun outside your home for self-defense.
This new law creates new rules for who can carry a gun in public and limits where they can be carried with a concealed carry permit. |

A 43-year-old burglary suspect is currently in the hospital, and Beaumont Police said a homeowner was well within his rights to shoot him.
The shooting took place early Friday morning in Beaumont's North End. Officers responded to a call about a burglary in progress in the 5300 block of Wildwood Avenue just after midnight, according to a Beaumont Police Department release.
While police were on their way to the scene, dispatch told officers the homeowner had shot the suspect who was now inside the residence.
Police later identified the suspect as Jason Omar Cruz, of Beaumont. |

The effective overturn of abortion access for women in Texas means that women must now travel out of state to safely end their pregnancies. Assembly Bill 28 places an excise tax of 11% on the sales price of all firearms, firearm precursor parts, and ammunition. These taxes are to be collected from California retailers and placed in a newly created “gun violence” fund for appropriation by the state legislature. It is unjust to saddle law-abiding gun owners with special taxes. Such a measure makes it more expensive for law-abiding citizens to exercise a constitutional right, and discourages them from practicing to be safe and proficient with their firearms for purposes such as self-defense, competition, and hunting. |
