"With passage by the House earlier today of legislation that will allow legally armed citizens to carry loaded firearms in national parks, Congress has taken a responsible step toward increasing park safety for millions of visitors, whether they are armed or not, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said."
"The measure passed the Senate last week on a lopsided 67-29 vote with 27 Democrats and one Independent joining 39 Republicans. Today's House vote was equally lopsided, with 279 voting in favor of the measure and 147 voting against it."
"'This is a great victory for gun rights and common sense,' said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. ..." ... |

... "When it comes to homicide and overall violent crime ... the full dataset shows that 'weak' states are safer: 19.8% lower firearms homicide and 6.8% lower non-firearms homicide rates. Moreover, the 'weak' states had 21.5% less violent crime."
"Bottom line: Suicide rates drive the difference between 'gun death' in VPC’s 'strong' and 'weak' gun law states, but since 'weak' states also have higher rates of non-gun suicide, VPC must either admit there are other causative factors besides gun availability, or admit that if more guns cause more suicides, then guns also cause less homicide and violent crime. As it stands right now, VPC's own data proves that more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens is an effective anti-crime tool." |

The recent spate of opinion-page letter writers and the pronouncements of gun advocates has convinced me, and helped me to reach my current state of enlightenment."
"Their argument is unassailable. Our safety will be increased when more people carry firearms. With the proliferation of guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens, criminals will begin to fear real and immediate retribution."
"I disagree, however, with the NRA's desire to have each state pass a concealed weapons law. Weapons should not be concealed. The laws should require that all weapons be carried in plain sight. ..." ... |

"President Obama voiced his support for an anti-gun treaty with such wide ranging implications that it could ban everything from assembling guns in kits to repackaging spent shells."
"The treaty was signed by former President Clinton, but never approved by Congress. ... Obama put his weight behind it during his whirlwind tour abroad late last month."
"Yesterday's passage of legislation that revoked the longstanding ban on guns in national parks proved that this treaty would probably fall by the wayside once more ... But the fact that Obama voiced his support for it speaks volumes about the President's view of the Second Amendment, after his famous claim to not 'take away guns' from law-abiding Americans." ... |

Yellowstone National Park wildlife officials say they have killed a wolf that chased people on bicycles and motorcycles on several occasions.
The action taken Tuesday against the yearling male is the first time wildlife managers have been forced to kill a wolf since the animals were reintroduced in Yellowstone in 1995-1996.
Previous attempts to haze it away from park facilities were unsuccessful.
Wildlife managers said the wolf had lost its fear of people, showing up in the Old Faithful area frequently, and posed a safety risk to park visitors.
Officials said the wolf has probably been fed by people. -------

Texas concealed handgun license holders could carry weapons into public college classrooms and dorms under a bill that has cleared the Texas Senate.
But in a last-minute change, the legislation exempts teaching hospitals run by institutions of higher education.
The bill passed 19-12 Wednesday and now heads to the Texas House. Supporters say the bill reinforces the constitutional right to bear arms and could prevent mass murders such as the 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech.
Opponents say it would make campuses more dangerous. -------
KABA Note: They have no evidence that it makes campuses more dangerous, but that doesn't stop them from saying it. |

"Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente, Jr. today announced his support for ammunition microstamping. Microstamping is a technology that uses a laser to make engravings on the internal mechanism of a gun. This is done so that when the gun is fired, this specific engraving is imprinted onto the casing, identifying which gun the casing came from. This legislation would mean all new models of all semiautomatic firearms manufactured in the state would possess the capability of microstamping ammunition."
