Safer Streets 2010: Ambush of guests by a hotel?

"90 million gun owners are a force to be reckoned with. The so-called 'gun lobby' has its purpose, but it is not hiding under every bed in every case of speaking out. Individuals speak out in their own voice, because individuals suffer various indignities hardly none of us would really stand for. Gun owners put up with a lot of crap, nearly all of it illegal and certainly dangerous."

"... Gun owner or not, how do you feel about courtesies and such in the hospitality industry? Shouldn't they be helpful and neutral? How would you feel if your host hotel disagreed with your politics, acted on that, took your money anyway [gobs of it] and then exposed you to personal risk once they had your money (on the barrel head or credit card)? ..." ...

"Last week, fellow journalist Paul Valone told me that the Charlotte Marriott City Center took well into tens of thousands of dollars from Grass Roots North Carolina and their guests, and invited them in for their 'Gala for Gun Rights' last Friday night during the NRA convention. Then, while the gala was in full swing, Marriott posted 'no guns' signs at all the entrances, turning all who carried firearms into instant criminals, according to North Carolina law."

"The federal government is arguing in a gun-rights case pending in federal court in Montana that state plans to exempt in-state guns from various federal requirements themselves make the laws void, because the growing movement certainly would impact 'interstate commerce.'"

"The government continues to argue to the court that the Commerce Clause in the U.S. Constitution should be the guiding rule for the coming decision. The argument plays down the significance of both the Second Amendment right to bear arms and the 10th Amendment provision that reserves to states all prerogatives not specifically granted the federal government in the Constitution." ...

"US Attorney General Eric Holder's charachterization of recent Georgia legislation (clarifying that licensed gun owners can carry holstered handguns in the non-sterile areas of airports) as 'very worrisome' seems to overlook reality: Most states have long allowed gun carry in airports."

"Last year a man was arrested by the Pittsburgh Airport Police for open carrying a holstered handgun in Pittsburgh International Airport. In Pennsylvania, like most states, no permit is usually required to open carry a handgun at age 18."

"But the Allegheny County ordinance enforced by the police was in conflict with Pennsylvania law - and thus the law, not the gun, was illegal. The judge entered a judgment of 'not guilty.'" ...

"MEXICAN PRESIDENT Felipe Calderón has shown courage in leading his government to take on the violent drug gangs that have claimed thousands of Mexican lives. On Thursday, he displayed a different kind of fortitude: standing before a joint meeting of Congress and asking for a revival of the U.S. assault weapons ban. The Obama administration, which has been largely absent in the fight against the illegal gun trade, should have such backbone."

"Senate candidate Rand Paul's views on guns are unlikely to land him in as hot political water as his bizarre understanding of the nation's most important civil rights law, but they are nearly as muddled and they are discomforting."

"In his ill-fated televised chat Wednesday night with Rachel Maddow on MSNBC ... Dr. Paul struck a sour key with an analogy to guns. If federal law prohibited a restaurant owner from declining service to a customer on the basis of race, he seemed to argue, then it could also prevent a business from refusing to allow patrons to bring guns onto its premises."

The Senate voted 36-0 for the measure Senate Bill 534 sponsored by state Sen. Troy Hebert, D-Jeanerette.
