"Many adults in the United States believe handguns should not be banned, according to a poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. 59 per cent of respondents would oppose a law that would prohibit the sale of these weapons, up four points since last year."
"The U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment guarantees Americans the right 'to keep and bear arms.' Some American states have enacted their own gun control regulations, independent of existing federal legislation." ... |

"Governor Strickland has made it clear that he supports these 'reasonable and appropriate' improvements to Ohio law. So with objections from the Governor's mansion a thing of the past, an amended SB184 should be on its way to easy passage, right?"
"Apparently not. The amendment was not adopted by the House Criminal Justice Committee today, as originally scheduled, nor was the bill given a vote." ... "The Ohio House will consider an amendment to SB184 (Castle Doctrine) this Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. It is critically important that your Representative hear from you immediately."
"Law enforcement groups are working frantically behind the scenes at this very moment to scuttle this important fix. Your Representative needs to know you support gun rights in Ohio." ... |

"In a recent speech to the National Rifle Association, John McCain presented himself as an advocate of judicial restraint. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee decried 'activist judges' who override the will of the people as expressed by their legislative representatives, in the process 'shrugging off generations of legal wisdom and precedent.'"
"Yet that is exactly what the U.S. Supreme Court will be doing if, as the Arizona senator urges, it overturns the District of Columbia's gun ban. Evidently some kinds of judicial activism are better than others. Perhaps activism vs. restraint is not the best measure of what makes a good judge." ... |

"Every time there's a highly publicized shooting, out go the cries for stricter gun control laws, and it was no different with the recent murder of Philadelphia Police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, in a letter to the state congressional delegation demanding reenactment of the federal assault weapon ban, said, 'Passing this legislation will go a long way to protecting those who put their lives on the line every day for us. … There is no excuse to do otherwise.'"

"This country's problem with gun violence is unlikely to be solved with bold strokes. The all-powerful National Rifle Association wouldn’t stand for it. Unfortunately, pro-gun lobbyists won’t even tolerate baby steps, like the one that passed the Assembly earlier this session, but seems doomed in the Senate, for a 'microstamping' law. That’s too bad because such a law could make some difference in helping police identify the owners of guns used in crimes."
"... The law would be useless if the gun were subsequently stolen or (illegally) sold to someone who failed to register it, but that's still no reason to dismiss the technology, which advocates say would cost less than $3 per gun." ... -------
KABA Note: And the cost of maintaining the "registration" database? Canada's is costing over $2 Billion. |

"Last March, a woman in Albany, New York filed a lawsuit against the city police department after being subjected to a humiliating public search in which an officer inserted two fingers into her vagina. The police had no probable cause for the search, and they found no drugs on the woman. After her case went public, others came forward with similar stories. The case also exposed big problems with the city’s Civilian Review Board. Contrary to city law, the city’s police apparently believe cooperating with the board’s investigations is optional, and have intimidated people–including the woman above–who file complaints from taking those complaints to the board." ... -------
