Politicians profit from laws that don't work. In fact, the next gun law politicians pass can actually make things worse rather than better. The reason is simple.

A former reserve officer with the Bryan Police Department is back behind bars.
Dennis Fraley turned himself in at the Brazos County Jail this morning on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of an elderly/disabled person.
Fraley was indicted in December on 57 counts of possession of child porn and one count of indecency with a child. He resigned from the Bryan Police Department in September.
The allegations of sexual abuse came after his arrest on child porn charges. According to court documents, the victim is intellectually disabled. She has an IQ of 58 and reads at a 4th grade level.

Police agencies across the nation are increasingly using drones to improve public safety, but need clear operations policies and limits to win public trust, experts said at a law enforcement conference in San Diego.
To that end, a model policy on use of drones – or “small unmanned aircraft systems” – was rolled out Wednesday by the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
The policy, which could be adopted or revised by any law agency, sets out specific procedures for deploying a drone, lists restrictions on its use, details how data would be retained or deleted and how operators should be trained. |

Despite the self-defense claims propped up by the supporters of concealed carry laws, the Violence Policy Center (VPC), a nonprofit group that seeks to address gun violence as a public health crisis, concealed carry permits holders are more likely to kill themselves or others during non-self defense events.
The center tracks fatalities associated with concealed carry gun permit holders at ConcealedCarryKillers.org and found that 743 people have been killed, including 17 law enforcement officers. |

A course entitled “Gun Safety for Personal Protection and Concealed Weapon Permits” will be hosted in Missoula by the Montana Shooting Sports Association on Sunday, June 7th, instructed by Gary Marbut.
This one-day course will focus on safe handling, storage and use of handguns suitable for personal protection, selecting a personal firearm, issues of personal protection, allowable use of lethal force, concealed weapon permits, kids and gun safety, shooting skills and more, and will include both classroom and shooting range sessions. |

The latest fight over gun control in Washington D.C. looks like one for New York to watch. It's on the question of whether the District of Columbia can require residents applying for pistol permits to show "good reason."
Short work was made of the question this week by a United States District Judge, Frederick J. Scullin Jr. He struck down the Columbia District's requirement that gun-permit applicants provide a "good reason" to own a firearm. And he set an aggressive schedule to speedily resolve the granting of a permit to plaintiffs. |

The AP's interest in knife laws stems from the recent death, in police custody in Baltimore, of Freddie Gray. Police justified Gray's arrest by claiming he was carrying an "illegal" switchblade knife. It turned out that the knife was a perfectly "legal" blade.
That aside, Holland is wrong in any case. Knife laws don't vary from town to town, county to county, state to state. There's one federal knife law. It applies to all levels of government in the United States, and unlike most laws these days it is simply written and impossible to misunderstand:
"The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." |

Recently U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., joined Senator Roy Blunt, R- Mo., in introducing legislation which would prohibit the federal government from requiring Americans to disclose their race or ethnicity in connection with the purchase of a firearm. In 2014, it was reported that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) implemented a change to Form 4473, requiring firearm purchasers to disclose both their race and ethnicity. |

The Oregon Senate has approved a measure aimed at keeping firearms from people convicted of domestic violence or under a restraining order.
Gresham Democrat Sen. Laurie Monnes Anderson said Thursday the bill was crafted to mirror a federal law that prohibits anyone convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence from possessing a firearm.
But, Monnes Anderson said, there aren't enough federal agents in Oregon to enforce the federal law. She says having a state law means local officers can enforce it. |

The president of a state gun-rights organization said Thursday it would consider suing Kanawha County because of the gun ban at Coonskin Park.
Keith Morgan, president of the West Virginia Citizen’s Defense League, said he would prefer to come to a compromise with county officials, but they didn’t find any common ground at the commission meeting.
Morgan listed four options as the group sees it, including legislation, activism, coming to an agreement with the county and filing a lawsuit.

Gun Owners of America -- a far-right gun group whose leader has been linked to white supremacists and has suggested that mass shootings are staged by the government -- will host Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz to address the group's "activists."
GOA is headed by Larry Pratt, a conspiracy theorist who frequently espouses extreme views on gun regulation. The group is considered to be to the right of the National Rifle Association touts itself as "the only no-compromise gun lobby in Washington." |

Oral arguments will be heard before the En Banc panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday, 16 June, 2015. The hearing will take place at 3:30 p.m. in Courtroom One at the James R. Browning Courthouse, 95 Seventh Street in San Francisco. I have not seen what judges have been selected for the En Banc panel. According to Ninth Circuit procedure, there will be 11 members. I am sure that the oral arguments will be well covered. |

A professor at the University of Texas at Austin is taking heat for an Op-Ed in the Dallas Morning News calling for restrictive gun control following the shootout in Waco, while an opinion in the New York Post yesterday warned that New York officials better pay close attention to this week’s concealed carry victory in the District of Columbia.
It is ironic that an anti-gun-rights opinion would appear in a Texas newspaper in contrast to a pro-constitutional rights opinion in a New York newspaper. There are plenty of reactions to the opinions of Prof. John Traphagan, who teaches religious studies and anthropology, while there does not appear to be a comments section for the New York Post’s piece from Seth Lipsky. |

If gun control was a brand, it would be The Sharper Image.
That company’s way-cool gadgets and sleek stores once were the definition of high-tech (remember that catchphrase?), making them the coolest kid in the mall. They sold shiny, remote-controlled gadgets at premium (at least to a college kid like me) prices that solved problems you didn’t even know you had. They were hot before hot was even a thing. |

Nevada lawmakers have defeated a measure that would have allowed holders of concealed-weapon permits to bring guns onto college campuses, leading one elected official to storm off the Assembly floor.
Assembly members voted 18-24 Thursday to defeat an amendment to SB175 that would have enacted the so-called campus carry law. Eight Republicans and 16 Democrats voted against the measure.
The amendment would have allowed concealed-weapon permit holders to carry concealed guns on college campuses and store firearms in locked cars. Republican Assembly members Michele Fiore and Ira Hansen proposed the amendment after a Senate committee refused to hold a hearing on a separate campus carry bill. |
