In 1946, Boris V. Semin designed the experimental 9x18 Makarov cartridge as an alternative to the popular 9x18 Ultra, developed in 1936 by Gustav Genschow for the German Luftwaffe. In 1947, Nikolay Fyodorovich Makarov designed the Makarov PM pistol around the 9x18mm round, which was introduced in 1948. Makarov’s pistol, also known as the Pistolet Makarova, was a powerful alternative to the 9mm used in the Walther PP/PPK series. The 9mm Makarov, a double-action, straight blowback pistol, was manufactured at Russia’s Izhevsk factory. One of the benefits of Makarov’s design was that the pistol was made with only 28 parts.

On the first day of a hot-barrel dove shoot, whether in Alabama or Argentina, the sight of doves twisting and zipping everywhere always seems to cause a frantic rush to shoot. Like starting a marathon race with a 100-yard-dash effort, if you’re not careful you’ll wear out before the finish. Because of the volume of shooting that doves can offer, it’s important to settle down, pick your shots and establish a rhythm that will prevent you from becoming fatigued—and to use one of the many excellent, currently available sub-gauge shotguns. |

This is one of the biggest revolvers you can get today and it comes with an even bigger fan base. Sure, it is not practical like a Glock or Sig Sauer, but hey, you know that already if you know this gun: Of all the revolvers on the market, few are like the Smith & Wesson Model 460XVR (Extreme Velocity Revolver). |

In a 2022 rollout of firearms that included various handgun and rifle models, Smith & Wesson’s new Volunteer lineup of AR rifles caught my eye pretty quickly. It might have been that I was on an AR kick and just finished reviewing a few Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport II rifles, which are a nice entry-level, budget-friendly pick from my experience. But you could tell pretty quickly that the brand-new Volunteer line had some extras that bumped them up a few notches over your normal entry AR-15s.

In the past couple of years, Taurus has really upped its 9mm game with a trio of G3 pistol models offering affordable options for everyday carry. All based on the standard G3 line – the budget gunmaker's third family of striker-fired polymer-framed pistols following in the wake of the PT111 Millennium and G2 series – the G3C was introduced in 2020, with the "C," for "compact," denoting the fact that it was both shorter in length and height than the base model. |

Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams was elected to get his city back on a path to safety. He’s instead continued down the path of his predecessors to punish law-abiding New Yorkers. He’s failed to turn the focus and resources towards those that commit crimes and hold them to account. |

Before electronic chronographs became common, or ballistic gelatin was thought of, a standard for bullet penetration was the number of 7/8″ soft pine boards, spaced an inch or so apart, which the bullets would penetrate. In Pistols & Revolvers, Volume One of the N.R.A. Book of Small Arms, published in 1946, penetration of pistol and revolver cartridges are given in the number of 7/8″ pine boards the specific round would penetrate. Soft pine is not an easy standard to replicate. Trees grown in different areas have different densities, as do different species. The age of the wood can make a difference. Ballistic gelatin does a better job of measuring bullet expansion, for expanding bullets. |

One of the most popular handgun cartridges available on the market today, the .380 Automatic Colt Pistol (ACP) is an easy-to-carry self-defense cartridge. With a variety of small, lightweight compact pistols chambered in this caliber, its mild recoil and minimal muzzle blast make it a popular choice among those who carry concealed, police officers looking for a capable back-up gun, and general backyard plinkers and target shooters.

While reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine, in March, I found myself swimming in a horrific, frightening, wonderful mix of dread, compassion and desperation to remain free. The literal tool for that freedom—many types of guns—were in Ukrainian’s hands. Shopkeepers, school teachers, engineers and professional soldiers were all armed and ready to fight for individual and national liberty. |

Sure, the Smith & Wesson Model 500 is a monster of a gun and not exactly a great gun for concealed carry or a popular semi-automatic like Sig Sauer or others. And yet, this big revolver has an even bigger fan base: The Smith & Wesson Model 500 is one impressive weapon. At this point, it’s become almost as much of a classic as Ruger’s 10/22 semi-automatic rifle! |
