another handgun ban, this one in Washington, D.C., where legislation has been introduced to restore to law-abiding citizens the right of self-defense."

The ... CCRKBA today challenged the Brady group to publicly acknowledge that it consistently supports bans on the private ownership of firearms, despite claims to the contrary."

"'The proposal that the Brady Bunch is opposing,' said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, 'would end a gun ban that's been in effect for nearly 30 years. The ban has prevented law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves, because handguns have been banned in the District, and you can't even keep a rifle or shotgun in a residence unless it is dismantled and rendered inoperable.'" ...

"Among the favored few and special interests who raise huzzahs to the Bush administration, none can feel more beholden than the National Rifle Association. The competition may be keen. But no Bush beneficiary ... can be happier at this moment than the gun lobby."

"Remember last Sept. 13? That's when the assault weapons ban – a landmark law and long festering sore point with the NRA – was allowed to die as the president stood by, hands clasped. ..."

"Would the lobby now let up? With its guys clearly calling the turn in Congress, nothing's needed there beyond the normal courtesy calls. So how might the NRA's small army of legal talent be kept usefully employed? ... Those lawyers have fanned out like locusts into the legislative halls of every state capitol. Their goal is to widen the beachhead for gun laws that won't stop until every American packs a pistol as casually – and yes, as lawfully – as his cell phone." ...

Submitter's Note: As long as all those "packing" follow the four rules, it sounds like Heaven to me.

"The manufacturer of a .50-caliber sniper rifle boasts that it can bring down an airplane with a single shot, and that's just one of the things about it that worries local lawmakers."

"'There is no reason to have this [sniper rifle] in a civil society - in our society,' said Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola), who compared the rifle to a Humvee, saying that it is 'the best of the best' in terms of sniper rifles."

"She and other Democratic lawmakers are hoping to outlaw the rifle with a proposed state law called the Anti-Terrorism and Aviation Act. They say the gun could also be used to wreak havoc on chemical plants or oil storage facilities." ...

"It happened at North 18th and Cumberland in Waco. After two unarmed men broke into a house there, police say the man who lived drove up and shot both of them. When they ran away, he started shooting their car."

"One of the shooting victims was found in a nearby alley. Neighbor Alma McDonald saw him collapse." ...

"Another victim ran to a nearby muffler shop, where employees gave him first-aid." ...

"We attempted to get the homeowner's side of things, but got no answer at his door."

"Although gun ban extremists often suggest that rural people have no need to bear arms for self-defense because crime rates are low where they live, the Ironton Tribune is reporting that area residents have much to be concerned about when it comes to crime these days."

"From the story:" ...

"A week ago, the village's police department was closed in a cost-cutting move. A few days later, village officials turned out the street lights because there was no money to pay the bill."

Submitter's Note: Slashdot, the web's foremost news-for-nerds site, reported today that a new "hack" has appeared for the popular Google Maps web service.

The web site chicagocrime.org uses Google Maps to display a daily-updated "crime map", providing a chilling display of recent crimes perpetrated in one of the gun control movement's flagship US cities.

Thanks to Chicago's mayor Daley, effective self-defense by law-abiding city residents is all but impossible, leaving them at the mercy of violent criminals (to whom gun control laws have never applied).

"What inspired the plucky Texan to decide to suddenly stand up for all of us? It probably wasn't the mayor or the police commissioner or the school superintendent, who all announced they oppose her idea. And the decline in the city's homicide rate didn't suggest a drastic need for change." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Six Flags Amusement Parks are sending a strong message to sex offenders: they're not welcome.

Season passes to all of Six Flags' Amusement Parks, which include Darien Lake, now state that the company reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone convicted of a sex crime. Six Flags is the first amusement park chain to single out sex offenders.

The company says it adds an extra layer of protection for visitors.

There's no word on how they'll know if someone is a sex offender.

Submitter's Note: It's a pretty simple concept called a database. And thanks to the REAL ID act, gun owners (who, unlike sex offenders, have committed no crime) can look forward to the same treatment.

"Why on Earth would the National Rifle Association promote laws so 'gun-toting' people could 'pack heat' in bars and not drink?"

"Say what? That doesn't even make sense. It's beyond stupid. And in fact, the NRA promoted no such thing."

"But you wouldn't know it from reading the papers or following newscasts."

"The inaccurately characterized 'guns-in-bars' bill received twisted coverage, using derision and phony Wild West mythology, from reporters and editors who earned rebuke for such unethical spin."

"While reporters cried wolf and instilled fear in a public they misinformed, 70,000 FBI-certified Arizonans, licensed to discreetly carry firearms, just hoped they would finally be allowed to eat meals in normal restaurants without leaving their guns in their cars as current law requires." ...

Jury selection continues Tuesday for the U.S. marshal charged with killing a man after a traffic accident.

Arthur Lloyd is accused of shooting U.S. Navy seaman Ryan Stowers of Redding, California, after the accident last October on Rockville Pike. Lloyd's defense team argues that he shot Stowers in self-defense.

Jury selection got under way Monday. A pool of about 125 potential jurors was brought in.

The two men apparently got into a fist fight after a traffic dispute and then Lloyd allegedly shot Stowers with his service weapon while he was off-duty.

The judge says the trial should last about three weeks.
