"A campaign by gun rights advocates to make it easier to use deadly force in self-defense is rapidly winning support across the country. ..."

"The law has spurred debate about whether it protects against lawlessness or spurs more crime. Supporters say it's an unambiguous answer to random violence, while critics - including police chiefs and prosecutors - warn that criminals are more likely to benefit than innocent victims."

"Ten states so far this year have passed a version of the law, after Florida was the first last year. It's already being considered in Arizona in the case of a deadly shooting on a hiking trail." ...
-------

KABA Note: What this story fails to mention is that in the Arizona case, the investigating sheriff ruled it a legitimate self-defense shooting, making it a perfect example of why this law is needed.

"Pro-gun Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ) is getting set to chip away at the mountain of gun control laws and regulations that are hampering gun owners in this country."

"Under current law, a person who travels to, say, a gun show out-of-state and buys a handgun from a licensed dealer must have the firearm shipped to a second gun dealer in the buyer's home state." ...

"In other words, the Renzi bill will allow you to travel out-of-state to purchase firearms in a way that you have not been able to do since 1968. Imagine that you live in Virginia and you are traveling to Missouri for Christmas. You stop at a gun show in West Virginia to buy your mom and dad a matched pair of commemorative Colt .45s." ...

"Hoping to counter rising gun-related violence, gun control advocates visited 69th Street recently to promote a new law they say would cut down on 'straw' handgun purchases."

"To make their point, a press conference was held May 17 near Lou's Loans, a local gun dealer who some see as a problem."

"'Lou's is the worst gun dealer in the state in regards to the amount of crime-related guns they sell,' said Chad Ramsey, Pennsylvania field director for the Brady Center, a Washington, D.C.-based group against gun violence. 'In 2003, Lou's sold 178 guns traced to crime.'" ...

Submitter's Note: Which might be a significant number if Lou ha only sold 200 guns in 2003. Or it might be significant if 90% of those crimes occurred within a month of Lou's sale. But that raw number is meaningless.

"The main bill would drop the age requirement for hunting deer, elk and bear with firearms from 14 to 12. It would lower the legal age for hunting small game such as birds and squirrels from 12 to 10." ...

"Supporters say getting children involved in hunting at an earlier age teaches them proper stewardship of the state’s natural resources and encourages children to stay active in outdoor activities."

"Opponents say the legislation — which also would set up an apprentice hunting license program — could compromise the safety of younger hunters."

"State Rep. Jim Coburn, a Republican candidate for governor, criticized Gov. John Lynch yesterday for vetoing a bill that would make it easier for a person to use deadly force in a public place."

"'Everyone has the right to save his life or that of a loved one, if necessary,' Coburn said, flanked by about 20 supporters, including lawmakers and pro-gun activists. 'With his veto, Gov. Lynch used rhetoric and scare tactics, saying New Hampshire would become an image of the Wild West. This is an attempt to scare the public with an untruth.'" ...

Submitter's Note: Repeating Lynch's lies does not make them true. The bill restricted use of force to attackers 'likely to use any unlawful force in the commission of a felony', not 'any attacker'.

"Baker had a prior offense of aggravated menacing involving another girlfriend. This is an 'offense of violence' and thus would be a disqualifying offense for the purpose of obtaining a CHL.  QUOTES TO REMEMBER
...If a man lies under oath or procures the lie of another under oath, if he perjures himself or suborns perjury, he is guilty under the statute law. Under the higher law, under the great law of morality and righteousness, he is precisely as guilty if, instead of lying in a court, he lies in a newspaper or on the stump; and in all probability, the evil effects of his conduct are infinitely more widespread and more pernicious. — Teddy Roosevelt - May 12, 1900
