"There’s something strange going on in America. The FBI’s 2010 Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report tells of a a 5.5 percent drop in violent crime and a 2.8 percent decline in property crime. [NSF bullet points after the jump.] With the economy in the tank, you’d think that crime would be on the upswing. Well, you might, if you were one of those Patrick Kennedy-types who blames bad behavior on society. You know: less opportunity to succeed through gainful employment, more desire to take what ain’t yours. Gun rights supporters reckon the falling crime rate is down to surging firearms sales. You know: deterrence by Ruger. Me, I’m going with technology . . ." ... |

"Few things really pass the test of time anymore. It seems that as soon as you buy a new computer it is already obsolescent and the latest whiz-bang model that replaced it won’t last but a few months. But if you look closely while watching news footage of our troops in Afghanistan, you will see a pistol that has indeed succeeded in passing that test and it is a testament to the genius of its designer. Few Americans today know who John Moses Browning was and it's a pity. We all know who Henry Ford was. However, is his Model T still in common use today? Of course not. Mr. Browning's designs are alive and well. Amazing, considering that many of his designs are over 100 years old and the man has been dead since 1926." ... |

"I walked into my gun store last week fully expecting to buy a Remington 700 in .308 Winchester. As I was walking down the aisles toward that long-touted paragon of bolt actions this little beauty caught my eye. It’s a short action bolt action rifle chambered for .308 Winchester made by Mossberg. It’s called the 100 ATR. The firearm comes with a free-floated barrel, pre-installed rails for a scope and iron sights. IRON SIGHTS! The Mossberg 100 ATR only cost a fraction of what I would have paid for a Rem 700 (and became cheaper by the second as I reminded my local gun shop owner just how much I spend on transfers there to do reviews for this site). But is it any good?" ... |

"TTAG contacted Hi Point’s PR peeps in late January / early February. We were up front about our plan: test the pistol to destruction. To prove (we hoped) that what the Hi-Point C9 lacked in refinement it made up for in simplicity and reliability. When asked if the pistol would be in 'sellable' condition after the tests, we politely responded in the negative. We were going to break the Hi Point and chronicle the punishment it took along the way. Hi-Point got the point and signed-up for our torture test. Then, time went by . . ." ... |

"Some gun owners only buy branded or name brand ammunition magazines. Who can blame them? The magazine is a mission critical component of any weapons system, and it’s the most prone-to-failure. Then again, as post-Loughner high capacity magazine defenders have pointed out, high cap mags are often used for range work, where reliability is not a life-or-death issue. In other words, I’m a cheap bastard. Lately the market has become flooded with imported magazines made by KCI in Seoul, South Korea. So when I saw that Cheaper Than Dirt had 33-round KCI mags for $14.97, twenty bucks less than the OEM 33 rounder, I figured it was an 'assault clip' match made in heaven." ... |
