Explaining why the officers shot a fleeing man inside a crowded apartment complex, Lewis said:
"Clearly, allowing this guy to be loose in this apartment would have been irresponsible on our part. He was very much a threat to the public and the people in the complex."
~California SWAT now Judge Jury and Executioner!
KABA NOTE: On the other hand, according to the article, this man was a suspect for murder and assault, had outstanding felony arrest warrants, and was fleeing from the officers. Given the information available (assuming it is correct), it sounds like the deputies may have done the neighborhood a big favor. |

A good cowboy friend I call the Professor —a lawyer whom I have yet to meet in the flesh— hung a label on me awhile back that I have since worn with some degree of pride. He referred to me as a Second Amendment Absolutist. Meaning that my position on gun rights could be accurately summarized with a simple question—What part of “…shall not be infringed” doesn’t the world understand? --Colonel Dan |

"Since the Oklahoma City bombing, the political right has been on the hotseat, blamed for "creating a climate" that supposedly made the violence inevitable. Of course, it was a partisan smear. The political violence of the left, meanwhile, goes unchecked, even though it is, in fact, a natural extension of an ideology that opposes property rights and economic development, and embraces force as a principle of social action." --Llewellyn Rockwell Jr. |

"In response to an NRA inquiry about the Ashcroft Justice Department's feelings regarding the Second Amendment, the attorney general said in a letter to the organization last week he would vigorously support and defend a citizen's right to keep and bear arms in the same way he will defend all other constitutional rights. In other words, he would treat the Second Amendment as equally and as sacrosanct as every other constitutional amendment." --Jon Dougherty |

"He has erected a Multitude of new Offices, and sent hither Swarms of Officers to harrass [sic] our People..." --The Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.
It used to be said that the little things were what made life worth living. Now, however, it's the little things in life that can get you handcuffed and hauled off to jail. --Russell Madden |

Lee Totzke likes to shoot handguns. And rifles.
The Lee's Summit mother of two even took a weeklong course in shooting, in Columbia. Every Tuesday she and her husband shoot together at Crossfire Recreational Center in Independence -- the couple's date night.
"It's like our bowling league," she said.
But at her PTA meetings, Totzke, 39, doesn't mention her passion for guns. Or at church. Or at her job. At least, not very often. |

"America's Greatest Problem: Not Crime, Racism or Bad Schools -- It's Illegitimacy," reads Chapter 5 from my book, "The Ten Things You Can't Say in America." Absentee, non-involved fathers are the primary reason behind recent Department of Justice statistics showing that 32% of young blacks possess criminal records, versus 7% of their white counterparts. --Larry Elder |

"As another evening star, Peter Jennings, told Larry King recently, bias often is in the eye of the beholder. And since Tom Brokaw also has publicly denied a liberal bias, it's official. There is none. It's all a figment of the reactionary imagination. Case closed." --Bernard Goldberg |

IT IS NOW CLEAR that John McCain is a man on a mission – the mission of making himself the Republican poster boy for liberal causes. As I wrote in my column, "The McCain-Lieberman Gun Grabbing Machine," Senator McCain has forgotten which state he represents. His agenda is more like the agenda of the Senators from large urban states such as California and New York. --Tanya Metaksa |

May 24 Neal Knox Update -- Sen. Jim Jefford's ground-shaking defection from the Republican Party isn't likely to have any impact on gun legislation in this session of Congress.
Before Jeffords' action, very little if any gun legislation was going to be enacted -- with the NRA/Bush-endorsed bills that nearly passed in 1999 the most likely to become law. That's still true. |

An Air Force physician facing court-martial for refusing to take the military's anthrax vaccine resigned Thursday, minutes after a military judge ruled that the order to take the drug was lawful.
Capt. John Buck, 32, claimed in a pretrial motion that the germ warfare vaccine is an experimental and potentially hazardous drug that was unlawfully forced on soldiers. |

On CNN the other night, Peter Jennings was asked by Larry King if there was a slant to news reporting. "I think bias is very largely in the eye of the beholder," the ABC anchor answered. "Good journalists work very hard to leave their bias beside the typewriter, or the computer as it may be."
Mr. Jennings, behold your colleague George Stephanopoulos. |

The action followed by several weeks the presentation of a petition signed by 500 people opposed to the location of the firing range. Opponents contend the presence of weapons on the high school campus is inappropriate, even though the weapons are air rifles, which do not fire actual bullets. |
