"Students from Riverside Elementary School have been allowed to go home after spending almost an hour locked in their classrooms. Just after noon, some one reported seeing a man with two guns enter the building from a playground next to the school on Chicago Street near Chase."
"Principal James Gault says as soon as the report came in, administrators put the school into a 'lock-down.' That means each classroom was locked, and no one was allowed in or out of the building. Gault says school leaders called TPS security and the Toledo Police as soon the report came in, and moments after arriving, officers secured a perimeter around the building." ... |

"The attorney for Harold Fish, accused of shooting an unarmed man at a trailhead last May, wants the case dismissed or a different prosecuting agency on the case."
"His reasons: Coconino County prosecutors interfered with and tried to suppress findings of the lead detective investigating the case, who believed the shooting was self-defense."
"County prosecutors, in a motion filed Tuesday, say that not only are the defense allegations untrue, the defense is merely trying to stall, through harassing motions, the prosecution of Fish."
"The lead detective arrived at his conclusion of self-defense prematurely and had lost his objectivity, say prosecutors. Therefore, he used poor judgment when interviewing Fish, and appeared to have given Fish the idea of self-defense." ...

"Much of the detail surrounding the grizzly bear attack that left 52-year-old Joanne Saunders with a ripped-up leg and a broken nose is largely a blur in memory, but the Virginia tourist does recall the speed of the animal that grabbed her just above the ankle Monday in Denali National Park and Preserve."

It will be karate yells and kung fu punches for anyone who tries to play dirty with women in Delhi as police are set to teach self-defence techniques to female citizens.
Delhi police's Crime Against Women Cell (CAWC) will train women in martial arts skills like taekwondo, judo and karate in this year's 10-day self defence programme for the city's women. Starting on May 30, it aims to raise their confidence levels by "empowering them with self-defence skills".
Said joint Commissioner of Police (CAWC) Vimla Mehra: "The main reason for the high rate of crimes against women is the perception that women are weak and vulnerable. This has to be changed by empowering them with physical defence skills.
"We will train them to be physically fit and mentally alert so that no one can take advantage of them." |

"The Illinois Senate today sent Gov. Rod Blagojevich a bill that would require the destruction of state records on gun purchases, while also requiring background checks on people who buy weapons at gun shows."
"The measure poses a dilemma for the governor, who supports the gun show provision but opposes the destruction of records pushed by the National Rifle Association."
"With the NRA lobbyist pacing in the chamber balcony overhead, senators voted 34-25 to approve the NRA-backed proposal to close the so-called 'gun show loophole.' Police have complained for years that the loophole allows ineligible buyers to purchase firearms at gun shows because, in many instances, they don't have to undergo a background check." ... |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
To trust arms in the hands of the people at large has, in Europe, been believed...to be an experiment fraught only with danger. Here by a long trial it has been proved to be perfectly harmless...If the government be equitable; if it be reasonable in its exactions; if proper attention be paid to the education of children in knowledge and religion, few men will be disposed to use arms, unless for their amusement, and for the defence of themselves and their country. — Timothy Dwight, Travels in New England and New York [London 1823] |
