As explained by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute, the firearms industry group that standardizes cartridge loading specs, ammo should be stored in a “cool, dry location away from solvents, heat sources, or open flames.” SAAMI recommends that ammunition should be stored in its original packaging or in packaging designed specifically for that purpose. This helps avoid confusion on just what caliber, load, and vintage the ammo is at a glance. Sure, factory headstamps can be deciphered and should be verified before you load a firearm or magazine, but keeping rounds in their original boxes helps keep you ahead of the curve. |

The past three months have been a period of extreme trial and tribulation for the people of United States. The Sebastian County Quorum Court will consider a proposed "constitutional rights sanctuary" ordinance Tuesday. The issue came up last week District 3 Justice of the Peace Shawn Looper made a motion to adopt the ordinance, but it failed for lack of a second and did not come up for a vote, County Judge David Hudson said. The purpose of the sanctuary ordinance is to protect "the state and federal constitutional rights" of Sebastian County residents, according to the proposal. |

Preemption law reform is moving in Louisiana and becomes effective in West Virginia at the end of May. As with nearly all states, Louisiana has a statute that preempts local governments from enacting ordinances or regulations which are in conflict with state laws regarding firearms. The idea is that firearms laws should be uniform statewide, so that people exercising their right to keep and bear arms will not be in violation of the law simply by crossing a street from one municipality to another, or one county to another. Some states have rigorous preemption laws, other states have minimal laws. |

Known by several names – including .45-70 Government, .45 Government, and .45-70-45 – the .45-70 was developed by the U.S. government and is one of their greatest cartridges. Even today, the cartridge retains the respect of hunters and shooting enthusiasts, and is one of the very few cartridges that has continued to thrive after being converted from using black powder to smokeless powder. The .45-70 was developed at the historic Springfield Armory in Massachusetts as a short-term replacement for the .50-70, which had been adopted just over a decade before. |

The 8x57 JR, based on the 8x57 J cartridge, is the same as the original 8mm Mauser cartridge except for having a rimmed case. This cartridge is most often found as the third projectile in break-action drilling rifles, topped with two other barrels for 12 or 16 gauge shotshells. The 8mm Mauser JR variant has been produced since the early 1900s, and is becoming less and less common every day – especially for those who shoot outside of Europe. Very few manufacturers continue to produce firearms chambered for this cartridge, with Blaser and Anschuetz being two of them. |

The phrase “once-in-a-lifetime” gets used frequently to describe adventures in the outdoors, but when it comes to hunting elk in Minnesota, it’s not hyperbole. Hunters who beat the odds and are drawn in the lottery for elk are no longer allowed to apply. A person needs to get lucky. John Williams, the Northwest Regional Wildlife Manager with the DNR, said it’s not uncommon to see 1,500 to 2,500 applicants for what has generally been well under 40 tags. But for those who do draw, success rates tend to be pretty good. |
