"The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is examining the results of an unusual sting set up by the City of New York, in which private investigators recorded themselves purchasing handguns at shops in several states."

"Acting independently of law enforcement, the investigators took hidden cameras into stores to test whether they would participate in a type of transaction known as a 'straw purchase,' where one person illegally buys a gun on behalf of someone else."

"Black-market dealers routinely use straw buyers to acquire weapons on behalf of people barred from owning guns, like convicted felons."

"The exercise was conducted primarily to support a civil lawsuit, filed by the city last week, accusing 15 gun shops in five states of repeatedly selling to questionable buyers." ...

"ATF spokesman Joseph Green said Friday that the actions of both the sellers and the undercover buyers would be examined."

"The team says a commercial model is up to five years away, but if it works, it will trigger a singular - and controversial - state law. Within three years, all handguns sold in New Jersey would have to be personalized, with this or some other recognition technology." ...

"Various smart-gun efforts have flamed out in the past, amid vocal skepticism by the National Rifle Association. Many gun owners chafe at the notion of any restrictions on their Second Amendment right to bear arms, and warn that any such modifications would make guns more expensive."

"Gun-control advocates, meanwhile, are split, with some warning that personalized firearms would give owners a false sense of security."

"More Government, More Crime?"

"The Clinton administration engineered the 'assault weapons' ban, legislation designed to restrict law-abiding citizens from purchasing firearms. The Brady Campaign praises Clinton for increasing the number of ATF firearms traces. What Brady does not mention is that gun traces do not have any correlation to enforcement of federal law."

Submitter's Note: But I thought it was just men with guns who placed partners at risk?

KABA Note: What we really need is some reasonable, common-sense hammer control.

BASC has recently launched a shooting opportunities website www.goshooting.org.uk which will help even more people get involved in the sport."

"There are 4,300 more firearm certificates on issue in England and Wales in 2004/5 than there were in 2003/4 which is the biggest yearly rise in firearms certificates for over 25 years."

"Many of the people reading this here on KABA, already have a pretty good idea as to my feelings about politicians... Anyone that has read any of the articles posted here on KABA, also knows my stance on the Second Amendment...."

"All that being said, I agree with your conclusions. With respect to related ideas, I supported the 'Castle Doctrine' as passed and signed into law in Arizona. As a former prosecutor, I believe that bad guys will still be able to be prosecuted while good guys will not have to fear defending themselves, their families, or their property, let alone have to worry about civil suits from thugs..."

"As police officers, we often visit schools and give safe messages to the children. Unfortunately, our duty weapon seems to pique their interest more often than not. That interest isn't only limited to boys, as we find that girls are just as fascinated. We usually seize this opportunity to give an impromptu message about firearm safety."

"Our message is a simple one: Stop, do not touch, leave the area and tell a trusted adult. Reinforcing these rules in the home on a continual basis will help your children remember what to do when they come across a firearm."

"This is not a debate about encroaching on the rights of gun owners. It is about enforcing existing laws, a position the National Rifle Association always trots out when it wants to stop any new laws. So is the NRA applauding Bloomberg and the other mayors, and encouraging a crack down on dealers? Of course not. Instead, it's putting the mayors and local police chiefs in the crosshairs by demanding they sign a pledge not to confiscate legally owned guns in the wake of natural disasters or terrorist attacks."

"That's just another 'straw' issue to detract attention from the real culprits."

"And depending on who you believe, one of two things could happen after the three-judge panel makes its decision:

"2.) Toledo park workers might begin carrying guns to work."

"Not one of these addresses the root of violent crime in Philadelphia, and throughout the country - the proliferation of gun availability and sales."

"When I was a teenager in this city, 1970 through 1978, the only time I saw a gun was on New Year's Eve, or at an American Legion parade. And this was during the height of the gang war era in Philadelphia."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of the people to keep and bear arms has been recognized by the General Government; but the best security of that right after all is, the military spirit, that taste for martial exercises, which has always distinguished the free citizens of these States....Such men form the best barrier to the liberties of America — Gazette of the United States, October 14, 1789.
