"Late Monday afternoon an ostensibly apologetic and congenial Keith Thomas, assistant to CEO J.W. Marriott, Jr., told a Grass Roots North Carolina board member that Marriott had 'stepped on a hornet's nest' and promised to remove signs prohibiting lawful firearms in hotels nationwide. Of the Charlotte Marriott City Center ... Thomas promised signs had already been removed."
"But on Tuesday, signs at Marriott properties – including the Charlotte hotel – remained in place ..."
"Some gun rights supporters are now expressing concerns that the claim by Thomas was merely a dodge to deflect the thousands of e-mails and phone calls pouring in from around the country. ..."
"But evidence suggests a more sophisticated corporate disinformation campaign in operation: By putting out the false message that Marriott is removing signs, the corporation sought to have gun rights activists do its bidding by putting out messages to that effect on Internet forums ..."
"In what might explain Marriott International’s decision to prohibit lawful firearms in all of its hotels, a reader recently discovered a link between its Chairman and CEO J.W. Marriott, Jr. and a longtime gun control organization, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence ..." ... |

"The government’s infringement of constitutional rights in the name of the War on Terror, begun under Bush and now amplified under Obama, threatens to dismantle the constitutional system of checks and balances and demolish the procedural rights that ensure due process."
"Almost every week a new rights-diminution is claimed by Congress or the President as a necessary sacrifice to defeat the terrorists. Disturbingly, however, mere suspicion of wrongdoing is increasingly used as a justification for abridgement of citizens’ constitutional rights."

"The case of Otis McDonald, a 76-year-old black man living in a drug-infested neighborhood of Chicago, is now being considered by the U.S. Supreme Court. McDonald's home has been broken into three times, and drug dealers have threatened him. He would like a gun to protect himself."
"Two years ago, in the landmark case District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court affirmed that the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees individuals such as McDonald the right to keep a handgun in their homes for self-defense. In doing so, the court overturned the D.C. handgun ban as unconstitutional. But the court's decision affected only the District of Columbia statute. ..." ... |

"The overwhelmingly anti-gun Chicago political machine has historically enjoyed the support of a similarly anti-gun electorate--the gun culture in the city has, for decades, largely been supplanted by the thug culture. Now, though, there are signs of a 'sea change' in Chicagoans' attitudes about armed self-defense. "An interesting decision, in People v. Javier A. (Cal. Ct. App. May 24). Javier A. was on probation, so when he was detained on suspicion of another crime, the police searched his home; Javier’s father, Emilio A., told the police there were two guns in the home. Javier also 'told the officers that 'he recently checked the gun [in the living room entertainment cabinet] to see if it was loaded.' Some writers have so confounded society with government, as to leave little or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only different, but have different origins ... Society is in every state a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one. — THOMAS PAINE |
